The Ashland retention pond adjacent to Ashland pool which had the initial reported sinkhole, did indeed fill back up with the rains. But today it was nearly empty again! The dirt ring around the original hole seemed to be keeping it from being completely empty.
In addition, on the north side of Belvedere blvd (?), near Pimlico Rec Center, and on what I believe is Pimlico executive course, there are two roped off holes in the course and a large pond on the golf course visible from the street is now empty. I am not talking about holes where one tries to putt their golf ball, but rather what appeared to be moderate sized sinkholes.
I viewed this from my car, and was unable to determine if any homes were involved, even though I drove thru adjacent neighborhoods.
Have seen no other details on this.
Zonerboy, thank you so much for this clarification. Now we know that two separate ponds are being discussed on TOLV & apparently other golf course sinkholes as well. Much appreciated.

We had a small block party Sunday night (Lynnhaven near Churchill Downs Ave) and it sounded like these were the same sinkholes that they mentioned. At least, the one in Ashland retention pond is. They were talking about a 2nd one too which I assume is the one near Pimlico Rec Center.

This leaves the one near the home though unidentified as to where it is.

Thanks for your drive through Zonerboy. I probably saw you leaving Doggie Doo Run Run.

Default Belvedere sinkholes

The sinkhole mentioned in the article is on the Churchill Executive golf course. It think it is between the 5th and 6th holes - the large retention pond before the restroom on that course. Additionally two weeks ago the pond to the right of the 4th green of Pimlico - lost all of its water. It has been repaired and retaining the water, however the pond between the 6th and 7th hole of Pimlico is empty again.

By the way, thanks so much to the peeps who PMed me with offers to drive by my house. I very much appreciate your offers. Since we do back on ponds in Belvedere Village, this type of ambiguous thread is somewhat worrisome. However I do have a Home Watch company, plus I'm sure that neighbours would e-mail me if it was close to our house. But I do appreciate your kind offers.

I just wish the OP, Anlashokna, would clarify the comment that the pond is in Belvedere!
Just passing along a news story that was being broadcast channel 13 news. I have no personal knowledge of the sinkhole or belvedere...locals to that village or channel 13 can probably answer any and all questions.

Those houses sit up on a hill above the retention pond placing their backyards above the pond. There have been homes in the past on the 7th hole wherein rain caused a mini mudslide of sort eroding away the hill. It all had to be built back up. This occured between 2007-2008 as I recollect

It all makes sense

I don't know if it is in Florida, but that is how they do it here. We have watched for the last six weeks as two homes were built really close to us. They do pour a footer,(Is a footer the part that is around the perimeter?) but not a deep one.

This conversation came up a couple nights ago with a small gathering and those from south Florida said their homes there were up on long supports deep into the ground. They don't have as many sinkholes in south Florida and I don't know whether supports would be better or worse. We can only speculate. They are built to code in the area.. They have county inspectors check after each phase.

There are 2 acceptable methods. One is the monolithic slab, with a depression around the perimeter that acts as a footing. The other, usually used with block walls, is a stem wall. The stem wall is 2 or 3 courses of block in the ground, laid on a mud slab, usually 8" +or- thick to provide a level surface for the block. Both methods will meet code, and neither is better than the other.

So I guess the one in the picture is a monolithic? I don't see any blocks. I wonder if they went deeper with a footer, if the home would be more stable?

Yes, it's mono. The footer is reinforced with rebar (usually 2) all around and if it was deeper than a foot (hence the name), it wouldn't matter in most cases if some of the ground collapsed beneath it. Of course, the more ground that collapses, the larger danger of the slab cracking and bending off due to excess weight without support. That being said, more is always better when it comes to foundations.
I had an investor one time that loved to buy problems like that and fix them. I learned a lot from him.
