I have addressed this before, storage is a probably the biggest problem here even though we have a fairly large home .
In Michigan our home is very large , to go from the front door to the back bedroom you pass a Howard Johnson's on the way.......
But the biggest thing I miss is when I retired I sold my airplane ,BIG MISTAKE............

What.....? You won't miss the guys with their pants around their knees walking down the street? This fashion statement is very popular here. Ick.

Thanks to all who posted! There are some very funny answers ---as usual. Seems that many of you miss some type of food!

I miss my family, Manhattan and the beach. But with that all said I love TV and I can still visit my family, go to Manhattan and the beach and then come back to TV.

We are also from Michigan. Although it is nice and convenient to have Publix, Sweetbay and Walmart so close in TV, we will miss meijer's when we are snowbirds this winter.

Now off to work. The countdown is on. I have only 88 days 'till retirement. Somebody please pinch me now!

It's a bit of a drive, but WELL worth it - Laspada's on Lee Road in Orlando. They are from Philly. Have the meat and the BREAD shipped in from Philly. They know that "With or without" is cheese not onions, mushrooms, and green peppers. Although you can get that sub.......Go shopping in Winter Park and then go to Laspada's on Lee Road for lunch - VERY well worth the trip!

I think that even though you have a large home, it's the space BETWEEN the homes that maybe makes you feel crowded......just thinkin.

  • Italian subs (NOT hoagies) made with fresh rolls from local Italian bakery
  • Saigon duck (extra spicy) from Vietnamese restaurant in local college town
  • Jazz -- radio stations, and also live in small venue clubs & local concerts

If you get itunes from a Mac product, it has a radio section. Click on jazz and about 100 jazz stations drop down from all over the USA. They even have talk radio where there is a few stations from my home city.

I have only been here 10 months and I do not miss anything from my old home up north.

Village Golfer,

Once again, we agree on something. I do not miss the Washington DC area at all. Real happy to be in The Villages.

Just in order to go out to dinner in the DC area, you had to plan on at least a 45 minute drive in heavy traffic - both ways. Here, we just get in the golf cart and have a choice of many good restaurants within a 15 minute golf cart ride.

Of course, we do go outside The Villages to a lot of very good restaurants, too.

Where did you move from?

Buggy,

The People's Republic of Massachusetts.

I guess I was just a misplaced person.

Just couldn't handle the cold anymore. I miss the Italian restaurants. When I get a case of nostalgia I go to itunes and tune in to some of my old talk radio programs. I miss Howie Carr.

I miss Famous Dave's BBQ, I checked and the nearest is in Tallahassee. They have the best Buffalo Wings anywhere. At lunch for $6.99 you get 6 wings plus celery with blue cheese dressing, baked beans, corn on the cobb and a muffin.

Since arriving here I tried wings at many places and found the best are at Sonny's and the worse are at Beef O'Bradys, they have almost no sauce on them. Unfortunately Sonny's treats wings like an appetizer. They serve ten for $6.99, which is a great price, but ten is too many and it comes with no celery or sides. Last time I ordered wings at Sonny's I added a side of baked beans and they turned out to be dry and stuck together, terrible beans, next time I'll try cole slaw.

Crab Cakes I would miss except my wife makes some of the best and we found crab meat available at Sweat Bay. Were having crab cakes tomorrow.

I do miss a good steak sub. If anyone is in the vicinity of Bel Air, MD go to Box Hill Pizza and get a steak sub. They are better than any you'll find in Philly. Box Hill is also noted for one of the best crab cakes in Maryland but I found them to be a little too rich.

Overall I do much more driving here. Living in Tamarind Grove it takes more than ten to twenty minutes to reach the places on 466 or 27/441. In Bel Air I could hit almost every major restaurant chain in less than ten minutes from my house.

In defense of driving, I did have to drive at least twenty to forty minutes to the six golf courses I played back in the Bel Air area. So far I've played Caine Garden, Havana and Mallory and drove to the course in my own cart and none of them took more than fifteen minutes.

I have owned about 15 houses, north and south, with and without basements. Biggest was about 3500 s.f. - 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, bonus room over the 3 car garage, den, family room, living room, dining room, etc. Don't miss it at all. In fact, it's very freeing to me. But, everyone is different.

I really think the secret is to get rid of "stuff." Be comfortable, not crowded. What do one or two people really need, use and enjoy? Pare down what you are really still interested in, and need, and sell or give away the rest.

This year will be our first fall in TV - didn't move down until November last year, coming back from Ohio this year in a couple of weeks. I will probably miss October in Ohio, probably the nicest time of year here. But I won't miss raking all those leaves!
