Unhappy What is your hurry?

Let me start off by saying that yes, I am loving the lifestyle here in TV. I am one of those that enjoy outdoor exercise daily. Some of us walk, jog, run, and or cycle. Where I come from (the midwest), the pedestrian has the right of way. Not here. Most cars and also golf cars have no respect for us. What is your hurry? It will take you longer to get where you are going if you are explaining to the police why you ran us over. End of rant.

You aren't ranting. I walk every morning and jump on the grass when I see a cart or car approaching. We're blessed to live here. When I am driving, I appreciate the walkers that look out for me.

Sadly it seems that the Rules of the road have gone by the wayside. Doesn't seem to matter if one is in an auto or a golf cart we see it everyday around here. Personally, I'm surprised there are not more accidents and or injuries. We all have to be careful out there.

Walkers and bicyclists seem to be in groups who make no effort to get single file or share the road. Almost a mob mentality.

jgm: First welcome to The villages. Secondly I am one of those golf cart drivers that applies the rules of the road and I am most respectful of bike riders and walkers on the muti-modal paths and on he roads as I slow down and sometimes stop if I see an approaching cart because I know most will just drive (other driver) around walker (you) when the rules say an obstruction in your path means the other vehicle (me in this case) has the right of way.

Thirdly, and I will get a boo from a segment of this forum, I directly place blame on this situation in the lap of the planners, designers and Developer who chose savings over safety. It would not have taken much space to separate walkers from driving machines but square footage is to be capitalized for more profit and the Villages of Lake Sumter, Inc will use every last inch of it and more if they can get their hands on it to capitalize for even more profit. its the American way and why many residents who have lived here for sometime feel like sardines

It could be.

But I think that this place is amazing and one of it's kind and I think that the developers did a pretty good job trying to lay things out well. There would be room for separate paths if we didn't use all of the green space. I agree that there should have been separate walking paths. There wouldn't be as much of a problem if everyone drove and thought of others like you do and I try to do.

I have to ask if there were separate paths for walking and running where we all came from? We moved here from a nice area and there were some walking paths.

We have time to walk and we have time to think what isn't perfect. We have time to post it here and say it wherever we want. We live here in a peaceful place. I feel lucky enough.

Particularly this morning. I don't have the answers. I don't even have the right questions.

I'm a runner and find others very respectful and I feel quite safe in TV. I do run against traffic and I keep my eyes open...........but the respectfulness, the waves, the smile I receive are great.

No matter where I run, there are always a few road owners.

May I quote The Twilight Zone episode titled Elegy: "And where there are men, there can be no peace."

Perhaps you need to place your post as a letter to the Editor in a couple of the local papers so that more of the folks who drive their cars, trucks and delivery vehicles in the community will also understand your frustration.

Where I am from if we want to enjoy a casual or an exercise walk we have to get into our car and drive to the beach where we can walk the boardwalk. Even a casual walk there can get one a lot of exercise if they are there at the same time many bike riders are there using the boards rather than the roadway!

The neighborhoods in which I now reside in CA and NM both have sidewalks for pedestrians, crosswalks, stop signs and stoplights. In California drivers stop for pedestrians (or are supposed to). In New Mexico being a pedestrian can be dangerous. I have to remember where I am. In CA rolling stops generally OK but be sure to stop for pedestrians who most of the time seem not to even bother to look before they cross! No CA (rolling) stops in NM and cars have right of way, or are driven like they do.

I'm from the Midwest as well- Chicago. To be clear, the pedestrian does NOT always have the right of way.

The rule in Chicago is this:
Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point OTHER than within a marked crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

I have seen numerous pedestrians HERE who do not seem to have or use common sense- crossing the street from between parked cars, stopping halfway across to check their phones or take a picture- or have a conversation..... even letting their (retractable) leashed dog wander into the roadway while they are chatting at the curb.
