My husband and I are building a Woodside Model in St. Catherine. What are your likes, dislikes, suggestions? House is max width for the lot. We are putting in a pool, so limited on space.

We built a Putnam which is a similar but smaller home. On the Woodside, I really like the brick/stucco, the dual closets in master. The only real thing I didn’t like was the location of bedroom 4. If you plan to turn that into a den area and watch TV there the location could be an issue since it is close to the master if one person is watching TV while the other tries to sleep. One of the good things about building is you can move things around. If you could move that bedroom 4 up to the front where the nook is and turn it into a den that would basically be the location of bedroom 4 in a Putnam. We didn’t put a closet in BR 4 and turned it into a den that looks out the front to our view of Sugar Cane. My wife uses it in the morning and I watch TV there in the evening.
You really need to think about how you live and what works for you. Finally, I will say the two bedrooms on the one side of the home get very little use. They are nice to have but 99% of the time they just sit there. Same with the living room, we use our BR 4 den unless we have company. Good luck on your build. |

We have a Gardenia which is a smaller, related model. We love the added space and island in the kitchen as well as the 4th bedroom in the Woodside. Like our place, we enjoy having views out of both the front and back of the house without having to go into a bedroom or den. We enjoy the "split living" arrangement of bedrooms 2 & 3 on the opposite side of the house from the master. We enjoy the "open concept" living area that overflows nicely into the lanai. It sounds like you are making a great choice - enjoy it.

Wish the laundry room was bigger.

I wanted a larger laundry room, but my husband reminded me that I shouldn't have very much laundry to do with no kids and no winter clothes.

Has anyone done any customization to the floor plan of a Woodside? We are looking at stretching the living room side to add more space for the living area and the 2 bedrooms. Before we get started, we were looking for what neat things people have done on the build or post build.

I like 4 bedroom homes as it adds a lot of useable space. I too like the Woodside especially having the 3rd bathroom. What I'm not crazy about is the small 4th bedroom and the kitchen, it is to tight in there but still a good choice. We chose the Ivy which is wide open but only has 2 baths and the bedrooms are all on one side but three of them have a hallway separate from the master. Our home was a spec home so couldn't change much, if I were to build a home one thing I would add is a walk out man door in the garage as I'm constantly opening and closing the overhead door to get in and out.

The issue is/was that I ordered front loading washer and dryer and the door to the laundry room didn't close. I had to swap the dryer for one where the front door didn't bubble out. We are only talking about 6 inches so if you push it out by a foot is would be perfect.

We love our Woodside, it solved a number of problems we saw in other floor plans we looked at. We bought a spec house Woodside so there was no opportunity to make changes but fortunately the builder enlarged both the garage and lanai so it is pretty close to perfect. If we had built a custom version some of the nice-to-have but definitely not mandatory "tweaks" we would have done would be to stretch the guest bedrooms/guest bathroom/LR side of the house by maybe two feet. Next the laundry room could be about 6 inches wider, we were able to get two LG front loader washer/dryer to fit but you have to use 90 degree elbows on the dryer exhaust hose to get it to be close enough to the wall for the laundry room door to close and it clears with only about 1/2 inch to spare. We use bedroom #4 as a home/office and will never use it as a bedroom so we would turn the closet around that is in there so that it opens up to the hallway outside the bedroom. That way you would have two very large closets (in the same hallway) to store stuff or one could be a food pantry. The large double wide linen cabinet in the master bathroom is fantastic and it came with two slide out laundry baskets in the bottom section that frees up space in the his & hers closets which would normally be where the laundry hampers are located.

Not what you are looking for but we started looking at designer homes and loved many of them. We also looked at 4 bedroom homes and after thinking long and hard my wife said, I really don’t want to clean this much house when I retire. Also if she ends up living there alone she didn’t want much house. We ended up going with a Charlotte Villa. Three bedrooms, ours, a guest and a den with sleeper. A lanai with a tv, couch and 2 chairs, living room with couch and 2 chairs and out front a screened in area with 2 chairs and a table for our coffee. Four great sitting areas and we rotate around as needed. Plus we have a beautiful laundry room with a door to close it off from the house. We love it and are very happy with just 1,400 sq feet.
