I've found that renters are pretty much welcomed to neighborhood activities, especially in the CYV's. There are some that don't appreciate having renters as neighbors -- they feel it brings down property values. However, the majority understand that TV is different from most communities and that renters and empty houses aren't as much of an issue here as they are in more typical communities. So, they are pretty much treated as if they are neighbors and welcomed as such.

This is a great thread and very helpful. We own our house, have only done so since the end of March, and it is a rental property until we can retire. We have had inquiries. One of the questions we have had multiple times from perspective guests is if the renters are accepted by the year round residents. We had a blanket answer that the renters wouldn't keep coming year after year if they didn't feel accepted within the community. This thread answered the question and we can now give factual information. Thank you for starting this thread and helping us as new owners.

We rented ours (CYV) out for first 4 yrs - have now been living in ours last 4 years. Neighbors tell me they never even saw some of the tenants. Ones across the street right now (for 2 months) seem to avoid looking anyone in the eye - I did go out of my way and asked them to a driveway party, to which they came.
I play may jongg almost weekly with another renter (long-term) in a neighborhood group. Other renters seem to already have friends here they know and are not looking for new temporary ones, I think. Some couples rent en masse - 3 or 4 couples scattered in different neighborhoods. And, some neighborhoods are just more social than others. People in established neighborhoods get busy with their set activities. But, in general, I would say that if the tenant wants to have friendly neighbors, they should make a point of introducing themselves and maybe ask some neighbors over for a driveway party or a casual cook-out. They they would probably be included if this is a socializing neighborhood. |

I like some of the renters better than the permanent neighbors and hope they come back.

In general, I find that most renters are not that interested in being friendly. They come for short stays with an agenda or schedule. They're spending money to do stuff, they're not spending money to stand around and talk to me. So they are busy, busy, busy. They are in and out to play golf, tennis, pickle ball etc.. They want to get the most out of their short stay in the Villages. And talking to me is not of much interest to them, as far as I can tell.
Certain neighborhoods have lots of renters coming and going all the time so it's difficult to keep track of who they are. Sometimes I see a lot of activity and sometimes it's very quiet. So I wonder, "did they leave?" After a while I just tune it out and go about minding my own business. Anyway, the bottom line is: I don't think renters come to Florida to establish friendships with neighbors. |

I wrote an earlier post on how we need to avoid renters and "they will go away". I think my humor went over the head of some.
Fact is many many renters have more money then us year rounders. Some I met have a home up north with 10 thousand dollar taxes and just want to get away for a 'few months' at 3500 a month and enjoy TV. So do the math. These folks lived where many of us once did yet were able to afford to stay there and keep their home, YET still come here for the good months and pay the hefty rental prices. Right now I'm loving the renters. God bless those who make money and spend it. I'm sure Helen was not asking for reasons that have been implied but God bless the heavy hitters who come here for six months of the year and blow their money. We are year rounders and have to watch every penny. Thank God this community did not depend on my wife and I LIKE MANY who clip coupons. Bring on the heavy hitters! NG |
