We have been looking at both pre owned and new construction in TV. There don't seem to be too many, and the ones we like need a lot of remodelling to make them accessible.
I guess we expected more "universal design" or at least 36 inch wide doors in an area specially made for retired folks. We found one home in Buttonwood that is advertised for "special needs". The ONLY thing we could see for "special needs" was wider doorways. The front door still has a step and there's a step down to the lanai. Anyone have any opinions on this subject? We are still planning to move to TV, but not quite yet. Thanks, Connie and Chuck ![]() |

Hi
Welcome to TOTV! We still have a way to go and although we may have the same concerns as you, we are not there yet. Something to think about. I would think unless you found a pre-owned home that suits your needs, you probably have to make any alterations on your own. New homes are not built with handicap people in mind as far as I know. (Although you can get a walk in shower in designer homes) Wishing you well and hopefully all will work out. I'm sure you'll get plenty of responces. I am looking forward to read them as well. I have a Spruce model (wider doors) - it works for a wheelchair - there is a slight ridge going in from the front door & also to the Lanai - but I wouldn't call them steps. I needed to add grab bars in the master bath shower - if you go that route - INSIST that the builder add wood 2x4's all around the shower stall - it was a pain doing that 1st thing after moving in (and stressful)- but I had to have the grab bars to be able to get my husband into the shower.
Feel free to contact me if you need more info. |
