Default Blood pressure

We are just about to come down to The Villages for a month and I need to know where I can get my blood pressure checked without going to the doctors. Any supermarkets or drug stores around The Villages where I can do this?

Most stores that have pharmacies. Walmart, Winn Dixie, Publix, CVS, Walgreen's.

We go to Publix. Note: Walgreens does NOT have a blood pressure machine. I like WAlgreens, but the lack of a BP machine irritates me.

I also purchased a blood pressure machine for about $50 and it works very well. It uses four rechargable batteries. If not ur cup of tea, though, u can use the machines at many of the stores at the local malls.

There are 5 Publix grocery stores here in TV and they all have a BP in the Pharmacy area.

Enjoy your stay with us. GomerPyle.

Default What's it worth to you?

I realize that the original poster's question has been answered, but before this thread runs it course, I would like to pick up on what evolve54 and k2at said about having your own bp monitor.

Hypertension is known as "The Silent Killer." Quite often, no symptoms show up and then it gets picked up on during a routine appointment with the doc. And certainly those monitors at the drugstore or grocery store can help. But I just want to say that I think it's really worth spending a few bucks to buy your own, for lots of reasons......

There are those who find that their blood pressure rises in correlation to their salt intake. And if that's you, you can do your own little study with a home bp monitor.

Maybe see how that bp is doing if you have been eating a lot of processed food or adding salt to the other stuff. Sodium intake can do a wicked number on bp for some. And if you are one of those people, monitoring bp yourself, between doctor visits, can make a believer out of you. (You know when you have been going heavy on the salt. Make yourself look at what that might be doing to your bp.)

There are those for whom stress causes a bp rise. Stress can be impossible to avoid, but you can stay aware of any effect it might be having on bp.

Diabetics can be prone to hypertension and usually know that they must monitor bp regularly.

And, yes, we might as well face it. Here we are reading something called "Talk of The Villages." -- Age can be a factor in hypertension.

(Whenever I write something like this, I think, "Oh, here goes Boomer again. She is probably an English major who knows nothing about medical stuff. Who does she think she is? Might be one of those librarian types. Librarians can be dangerous people. Librarians know a little bit about a lot of things and not a whole lot about anything. Oh, who knows? But here she goes again.")

But I am going to post this anyway -- because hypertension is serious stuff and if just one person catches a problem with a home monitor and gets on top of it, this will have been worth posting.

I agree with evolve54, k2at and boomer.

If you have any reason to have your blood pressure tested on a regular basis, purchase one of the wrist type blood pressure machines at Walgreen's (or any other place they are sold). Take your blood pressure on a regular basis and when you go for your regular checkup with your doctor, bring your BP machine with you and check your blood pressure with your machine after the nurse does it with the house machine and see if you are at the same numbers or close to verify that your personal BP machine is accurate.

The wrist type is compact and can travel with you. No need to find a drugstore or grocery store that carries the machines.

Default Recommendation of dr to deal with hypertension?

I am looking for a dr for my mother who lives with me 5-6 months a year, then returns to her home in CA. Her blood pressure is running off the map on the top number (180, 190, 200, and even 219). Her bottom number is low (50s and 60s). Any recommendations for a dr that deals with hypertension?

Just an idea - why not purchase a blood pressure monitor? They cost around $50 and you can take your own blood pressure anytime you want without going to a drugstore or grocery store.

I got my blood pressure monitor for free at the VA.

With those type of numbers I would hope that she is already being treated? If not then she should be seen soon. And if she is being treated then something needs to be tweaked. The low Diastolic number (the bottom one) is somewhat common in older people due to worsening elasticity of their vascular system which can be reflected in the Systolic number (the high one). But that high a Systolic number is still of concern.

I'm an RN and not a doctor so my recommendation would be to see a doc for treatment.
