Has anyone ever played a game called "Knucks"? If you lost you got smacked with the deck of cards on your knuckles. Also card games called "Scoop", "Briscolla" (not sure of spelling). Jacks, marbles and pick up sticks.....Johnny

What is with you Mid/East Coast girls? First babushkas tied between (I think) the lip and the chin and now hula hoops just to the knees? Sheesh -- it has to go up from the waist to the neck, down to the ankle, one foot up, foot down, up to the shoulder, down to the wrist, back to the shoulder and over to the other shoulder and wrist, back to center and down to ankle and other foot up. And they say California girls are wimps. HAH!!!

Now, double dutch was an East Coast thing. We played jump rope but individually. It was rare in California suburbs for kids to use long jump ropes. We did invite others to join our rope and jump together.

Marbles was big throughout the country. I still have my shooter and steelie.

Donna, love your posts. They are so creative.

Back on topic, how about "potsy" - in the Bronx, we played it on the sidewalk and used our keys throwing them into the boxes and then jump on one foot and pick up the keys and jump back on one foot to home place. I think that was the name? Johnny M might remember cause he was from the Bronx too.

Another one is riding your bikes or roller skates on a closed street called, "A Play Street" that kept cars out so kids could play..... Please forgive me, these are big city activities where there weren't any playgrounds or formalized activities. Kathie

Guess you're talking about hopscotch, Kathie? We used the chains that held the little coin purses that you squeezed to open (another fad/era thing?).

Okay, fad drinks/food: RC or Coca-Cola (no Pepsi, EVER) with peanuts in them. French fries with mayo (yuck!). Moon pies and RC. Egg creams. Real soda jerks making chocolate sodas (yummmmmmm). Wax Coke bottles. Candy cigarettes. Candy straws (thank goodness those are still around and still yummy). (Yeah, I know, not faddish, just nostalgic.)

"Potsy" sounds similar to Hopscotch -

I think your right, the formal name probably was Hopscotch but we called it potsy (remember Potsy on happy days?)

Thanks for the info.

Had the longest gum chain in the neighborhood - can't remembe how to make them though...A lost art...what ashame...
Along with the foil Christmas tree came the color wheel that shined on it...
We actually lived across the street from a cow farm and would get quart bottles of milk from them that still had the cream on top because it wasn't pasturized or homoginized (can't remember which)...

Yes Kathie it was Potsy or Pottsy. Mostly the girls played and the guy's watched. You drew boxes with numbers 1 - 9 I think. They used chalk (too expensive at times) so they used soap or just the side of a big rock. You threw you keys or a stick or rock onto a number and then had to hop without hitting a line pick up the item and hop back again without losing your balance. Some called it Hopscotch. How about bouncing the Spalding ball under your legs while singing a song? Johnny

OMG, almost forgot small portable radios. Held them up to our ears and walked around the neighborhood beebopping along. Cool man!
