more-figs-010-jpg

Here is a picture of my latest batch of figs and my trees. Unfortunately, "Issac" is beating them up right now.

These are the first pictures we ever attached so hopefully it works.

This is my Mission Fig Tree (smaller upright bush on right with smaller fruit)

Turkey Fig Tree (larger bush on left with larger fruit)

I wish you weren't so far from me or I'd offer to stop by and help you pick some. 1 for you, 2 for me.

I sure miss fresh figs! The preserves in the store are usually from California and not as good as eastern ones.
Their peeling is tough.

I went grocery shopping at Walmart today and found some fig preserves from a company in Georgia named Braswell (green label, small jar). They were excellent if anyone is interested.

It's super easy to make fig preserves if you have the preserving equipment.

That stuff is really good dabbed on cheese, like good Irish cheddar.

I read in a food blog that the best way to eat a fresh fig is to cut in half lengthwise and smash the two halves together. Supposed to bring out the sweetness somehow. I never had a fresh fig, so I don't know.

I've never heard of that and I've been eating them all my life but there is nothing so good as a freshly plucked fig and just bite into it, maybe half at a time will do the same thing. My grandparents put coffee grounds on their fig trees for 40 years and they were the sweetest figs and the trees were always loaded with them.

Can fig trees be grown in our zone at TV? Actually, what is our zone at TV?

According to Wikipedia figs grow in zones 9 and higher. Florida according to the USDA Map USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map
is in zone 9a. Therefore they should grow better in The Villages than they do here in PA.

I had a bumper crop of figs earlier. A second crop is halfway done right now.

Just came across this minutes ago - hope you enjoy it - especially the receipe for the fig and burbon! I bet you can use a lot of figs with this drink receipe - invite the neighbors over too!

Figs are awesome in "green smoothies", as they add a sweetness to the drink. They have many health properties. You are so lucky to have such bounty!
