Default Madeleine Albright: The world is a mess.

Let's try this again using Albright's statement on CBS instead of my calling it "gone to hell in a handbasket"...

What do you think of current world affairs, and if you can say it without political sides taken, what can we personally do or espouse as a nation?

For new posters, you may not promote your party or bash the other party. If you do, the thread will be closed.

This will be fun to follow. The negativity should be overwhelming otherwise there will probably not be much to be said.

I tried a positive post awhile back called "I am so thankful" as opposed to "The world is a mess". Mine went downhill fast with a lot of negativity. Your post will probably be embraced with that negativity with "The world going to hell in a hand basket".

Several days before Jesus was impaled, the disciples came to him and asked him about the future. They were interested in knowing about the establishment of God’s Kingdom, of which Jesus had so often spoken. They also wanted to know about “the conclusion of the system of things,” or as some translations render that expression, “the end of the world.”—Matthew 24:3, American Standard Version; King James Version.
, Jesus foretold that there would be large-scale wars, famines, pestilences, and great earthquakes. He also said that lawlessness would increase, false religious teachers would mislead many, and true Christians would be hated and persecuted. —Matthew 24:4-13; Luke 21:11.
---------------------------------------------------

2 Timothy 3: 1-5

But know this, that in the last days+ critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having an appearance of godliness but proving false to its power;+ and from these turn away.

How does this relate to 2014?

I think General Amos, Joint Chief of Staff and Marine Corp Commandant did a great job of answering that question in a recent interview. He gave a concise view of the world status and how the US plays in that space. Very unusual for a Chief Staff General to be so outspoken, but I applaud his candor.

I can remember my mother telling me stories of people knocking on their door during the depression, for food and a warm place to sleep. My grandmother would make them a sandwich (whatever), allow them to sleep in the barn, and tell them to pick some vegetables or fruit to take with them. In exchange, they would milk the cows or split fire wood. That day is long gone.

I cringe when I hear the problem is too big for any individual. It has to start with the individual and not depend on the government. Just a few simple things that come to mind:
When tissues are on sale, donate them to a head start program
When there's a bogo on laundry detergent, donate one to a animal rescue
When you find you don't like the case of black beans you purchased at Costco, donate
to a food bank.

Right now we're down sizing. The baby stuff we had for our grandchildren when they slept over will be going to a young couple starting out. We've asked when they are done with the items to donate to a shelter for abused woman with children. What you may see as junk, would make a tremendous difference to someone else.

The mess of the world begins with us.

Gamby, You took the "verses out of my mouth", that IS the answer! God is the same today (2014) as He was in the day he spoke these words to His disciples.

I don't think the world is in any worse shape that it has been in the past.

If we look back on the succession of our conflicts including World War II, World War I, the American Civil War, and so on and so on, all the way back to the Dark Ages, we see that homo sapiens breed conflict. Human beings, I'm sorry to say, for all of our boasting about how superior we are to the rest of life forms, seem to be judgmental and violent by nature. The only difference today is that most of the conflict and killing in today's world is done in the name of a religion. Now before you get riled up, I'm a Christian, but I'm just telling you what I observe.

What can we do? Try to overcome our nature and thus stop being so judgmental, and stop reacting to perceived affronts with violence. Teach our children to see the world in a different way.

Good luck with that.

Wars are often fought by people who think they have the grand plan for a perfect society on earth but with the "crooked timber of humanity" you cannot really build it. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Immanuel_Kant

Except for the possibility of war with Russia because of Putin's over-reaching, I really do not see the world in a worse shape than a few years ago. There have certainly been much more frightening periods of US history than 2014. 1864, 1914, 1934, 1964 for instance.

So I guess it was a "perceived affront" when 3,000 innocent civilians were murdered (in the name of a hijacked world religion) in NYC, our nation's capital, and the scorched hole in a PA field on 9/11/01, and we should have done nothing in response. (?!?!?!?!?)
