I agree with your not-so-subtle sarcasm. There was a time when a clerk had to read the price, enter the price, receive the payment and give change etc. A source of many jobs. But, technology advances, and just like the switchboard operators becoming obsolete, checkout clerks are being phased out. Any company touting their plans include not advancing with the technology, is relying on customers willing to pay higher prices for keeping non-essential employees on the payroll.

Seniors don’t like self checkout because they find them too complicated to use. If you are buying an item that doesn’t have a scannable bar code you have to locate the item on a screen, and if the item isn’t on one screen you go to the next one until you find your item. This is where the oldies get flustered and confused. Then it asks you how many bags you used. Then are you paying cash or card? Go into any supermarket and you will see young people at the self checkout and the seniors at a cashier. There might be a line of 20 people waiting on the cashier line, and 6 empty self checkout stations, but the senior will wait for a cashier.

Don’t really care what you want. I hope the stay away. Virginia and NC ore probably the fringe of their territories. Useless store.

Next we'll be going to Publix to buy a sub and we'll have to go behind the counter and make it ourselves.

I agree but it seems we’re in the minority. I see mostly highly processed frozen meals.

It makes sense for Trader Joe's. They are so crowded that self checkout lanes would probably mean longer lines and even a more congested store. The cashiers have very little downtime.

Worse yet, if you’re in self checkout and there’s no code to scan, you have to get help from an employee! That wastes time, and makes you feel incompetent.

Self checkout works best for smaller orders. For large orders, where you’d have items like frozen foods and packs of heavy bottles of water, cashiers can pack more quickly and efficiently.

Hey let’s keep things respectful on this forum! Everyone is entitled to their opinion on where they like to shop. Agree to disagree!

Everything is a cycle and we will see them bring back cashiers when they realize that self checkouts make things more difficult for customers. One day the spoiled youth will NEED to go back to work and there will be a flood of cashiers LOL. Either that or they will be all robots (if we all live that long). Heck, the Jetson was supposed to be 2062

I remember banks giving you all kind of promotions to try their new ATM machine and seniors saying they should stick to tellers. What’s new will be old one day and replaced with something newer.
I like self checkout - no crushed chips.

Anyone else remember the days when a grocery store checker was a skilled position? No scanners, no bar codes, every item had a price sticker. It was a union job (retail clerk's union). As a bagboy at age 15, I was amazed at the speed, skill and accuracy of the checkers. They rarely made mistakes, and would send items down the line in the order they should go into the bags. I know I wax nostalgic, but watching a skilled grocery checker was s thing to behold!

Up North we have three market chains, Wegmans, Tops, and Aldi's. We now shop when back North, more at Tops than Wegmans because they have changed so much with their product mix. When you first walk in, Fabulous! Fruits, veggies, hot food, cold food, sushi, cheeses, deli, bakery, and more. Seasonal veggies are from local farms, freshly picked. Then the fish and meat cases, butchers, wonderful. Prepared meals to go, I could go on and on, seriously.
But when you go into the inner market, what has happened is they have migrated their store brand, Wegman's, in place of the name brand, so you may not find, the product you always used, and are happy with it, but now it's a Wegmans brand. If you do find a name brand on the shelf, it is usually some ridiculously large size, not practical to buy. Also, never BOGO, never. If you use coupons, will not happen. Deli meats, like Publix have their own cold meats. The only place I have found is Walmart for a choice of brand name cold cuts. We tend to use Tops Market, (Buffalo, NY based) for major grocery trips. BOGO's, coupons, and brand names, big choice on the shelf.
Yes, we do shop Wegman's, but not for our bulk purchases.

I agree with having both options of self checkout and cashier lanes. I worked at Publix as a cashier for 6 years so I always use self check out if it’s an option. As far as replacing cashiers, in Publix, 6 checkout lanes replaced two regular lanes and require a cashier there at all times. Assuming only one of those lanes would have had a cashier on it, there is no displacement of any cashier as they are now working the self checkout lanes.
