The Confederate flag was not used after the Civil War until George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door to refuse admittance into the University of Alabama for 2 students of color. Then the Confederate flags went up all over the south...check it out because I researched this little known fact.

Students across the nation are being harassed by educators for expressing their freedoms of religion or their conservative views. Progressive students talk of trigger warnings and micro aggressions regarding American history, political situation that do not compute in their liberal minds

I don't see the world in an either or liberal/conservative way. Perhaps that is because I am conservative on some issues and more liberal on others. To me not all news stations other than Fox are the liberal media to be distrusted. As for freedom of religion....my views were forged in grade school when I went to public school from Catholic school. That would have been around 1959-60 when we had to read from the Bible. Being Catholic I couldn't read from the King James version nor could I say "For thine is the Kingdom...." at the end of the Lord's Prayer. This caused quite an issue for the 5-6 of us in the class. We were mocked, treated differently and then when Kennedy ran for President it only got worse. I had never experienced such hatred.....

Progressives dealt deep blows to Donald Trump because he spoke the truth about our immigration policy and there is ample evidence in the daily newspapers to support his claims

Not sure what "progressives" you are talking about but he has been hit in the pocket book by 9 businesses. I really don't think Trump will stay in the race because of the financial disclosures but its fun to watch.

Climate change is a hoax based on faulty scientific evidence whose only basis is profits for renewable that have been proven to be extremely expensive , unreliable and supported by heavily by taxpayers

Obamacare and Dodd-Frank are in short dictatorship by government and to add insult to injury ineffective in their intended purpose

I believe that there is climate change even the 1 scientist used by the deniers has changed his tune. Obamacare has given healthcare options to people who were not able to be insured. The insurance companies went to far when they refused healthcare to a newborn claiming a "pre-existing condition". There does need to be some controls on banking....they drive this country to the brink in 2008.

Hopefully this answers your questions....
First let me be clear. I am not the OP of this thread, thus my comments relate to what I THINK he/she had in mind with the post, because I sense the same thing in the country. So, at some point, the OP may weigh in differently.

On the confederate flag issue. I personally understand the anguish on this particular flag. It has, in the past, been at the center of issues. Displaying that flag, especially at this time, shows nothing but insensitivity to others. Taking it from the capitol was a good thing to do.

Having said all of that, threatening someones jobber displaying it in a parade when it is not illegal, just very insensitive, is a bit of an overreaction to me. If you check the recent news, you will find the states of Mass. and Minn both now being critiqued on their state flag. SUDDENLY, by the way and that is important to the point I want to make at the conclusion of this post.

You, in my opinion, are reading some kind of okay for the confederate flag in the OPs remarks and IN CONTEXT I do not think that is what he is saying at all. It is one factor, IE. THE THREATENING OF SOMEONES JOB.

Your response to the education part of the post is a bit confusing. You speak of the media which is not part of what he is saying. There is a movement to almost allow a "time out" if something MIGHT offend you is going to be taught. It is suggested that you cannot refer to America as the land of opportunity because someone might not see it that way.

I understand your Catholic school experience, but nobody was filtering what you heard as part of the curriculum. Big and huge difference. And again, read all of this in context

I do believe, no...I KNOW that activist groups were up and running with Trump. The money that Soros gave...I think I read he upped the money by ONE MILLION DOLLARS just on this issue to start the online petitions and allow for the backroom pressure given to NBC and all of them. NBC sort of made me laugh with their high and mighty stuff but....all activist driven.

Now, that is not a defense of anything Trump said in anyway. I do believe he is more right than wrong. I do believe we are welcoming much of the criminal population of Central American countries. Instead of engaging in conversation on the issue, and this included many if not all of the Republican candidates it has been let us attack the man. What he said was certainly not the right way to get attention but he did. This is what minor candidate do in primary season and always have.

I cannot comment on climate control as I do not understand it and anything I read turns into politics and for me, that is just not something I enjoy. I enjoy POLITICS, but not POLITICIZATION

To recap, I read the OPs note to speak to the non conversation but activision that abound now in the country. When I speak of these issues, do not confuse my comments with disagreeing or agreeing....but...

Our President and his entire party, a short 3 years ago were against gay marriage. In 3 short years they completely changed their mind BEFORE the Supreme Court ruling. Was that because the entire party and administration just came around in 3 years ?

The confederate flag was flying about 2 weeks ago and nothing was said;NASCAR had it on every track; we had a tragic and terrible thing happen, and suddenly people will be arrested for having it on a vehicle IN TWO WEEKS and a sit com from years ago is cancelled because of the flag.

Our public schools after all this time, suddenly need to warn people that they MIGHT find this offensive...whatever is being taught, which includes century old title. We are unable to refer to our country as the land of opportunity because maybe some child in the class will be offended by that term and we do not address discipline problems in elementary school before looking at their race and deciding that maybe the are not at fault because of their culture.

I am sorry...this is activism and it is prevelant right now. Always has been and always will be activists but they are MAKING POLICY....not trying to influence...they are MAKING POLICY.

I hope what I say makes sense...while I have so much more to say, I am trying real hard to keep it short.

Thanks for your post and keep them coming.

We agree that the flag should be taken down from the Capitol, which I expect to happen. I believe the firefighter was suspended not fired but correct me if I am wrong.

Not sure what you mean by my educational comments... but I don't believe in the "Liberal Media" hoax. All channels other than Fox are not to be trusted because they are liberal?

I was in Catholic school until 2 grade, the reading of the bible was imposed in the 3rd grade. My point was I exposed to religious bigotry at an early age...something I will never forget. So I am very sensitive to people wrapping themselves in "religious freedom" to deny someone else's rights.

As for Hillary, Obama and gay marriage. Clinton came into office with the stated purpose allowing gays in the military. He ended up having to sign Don't Ask Don't Tell in the dark of night. So no I don't think Hillary was against gay marriage, on the other hand I do think Obama was....That is why I didn't support him.... I was a Hillary girl. As for the rest....they had their fingers in the wind which was NOT blowing in favor of gay marriage. Things did seem to turn on a dime but I think that was because more gays blew the doors off the closet so most everyone knew someone who is gay....

As for school their zero tolerance policies have done more harm than good.

Dear Guests: I am a catholic educated citizen who is the OP on this thread and given some of the responses I feel a need to reiterate my sole objective in starting this topic. I suspect the variations in responses is because of that human experience called "lost in translation"

This thread is not about a flag rather it is about radical progressive who are well place in our educational institutes, corporations, churches,Hollywood and federal/state/local pushing an agenda by means of force and intimidation trying to force people against their conscience to accept things that they believe are morally wrong to them or simply lack common sense. Its why I quoted Thomas Jefferson in my last post.

My catholic education has nothing to do with regard to my opinions about abortion gay marriage, etc. I come by those views based on the adverse effect it will have on our nation not as a moral issue alone but in contradiction to the sciences. In fact this new pope has been rubbing me wrong on his opinion concerning capitalism and climate change

The main focus should be on students who literally are offended by Huck Finn or Song of South, one of my favorite Disney movies, because of the old man who tells the story, a man that I viewed from the first time as grandfatherly and loving . Worse yet they shun the classics because they were created by evil white men.

Who would ever have believed that marxist teachings would be encouraged in this nation via polticial correctness, trigger warnings, and micro aggressions what the heck is wrong with our young people.

My parents made me aware of the unfairness of nature and the struggles of life. My father was a direct guy and when I first made mention that life wasn't fair he said no ----. He had a John Wayne mentality meaning he struggle for the fairness for the little guy showed respect for those who deserved respect and went out of his way to remove the bad guys either by a vote or if it was a local bully by his fist. He loved a good fist fight. He loved America.

Today we have progressive mocking America .

In summary this is a cultural battle between traditional America and the new normal and what I see as the new normal seems to be degrading America. Progressives will continue their take no prisoners attack on our religious and moral values by over turning the constitution to fit their ideology

so the Confederate Flag is a symbol of how easily that can be done by demonizing it a classic Alinsky tactic.

Once again those of us that understand the necessity of traditional America values which has kept this nation safe and certainly free need to understand the assault by progressive on those freedoms

Personal Best Regards:

Ok.,,,,you avoid the subject of "trigger warnings" and "micro aggression"and instead focus on the media. I would like to hear what you think about what is happening in OUR SCHOOLS with OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. I do not see the media in this post at all but that would be another great thread.

"Trigger warnings" and "Micro aggression" AND you also have not spoken to the overall and general theme of activism attacking all aspects of our society.

Thanks

I have never heard the terms Tigger warnings and Micro aggression until your post so I cannot speak to them.

I do support gay rights and therefore agree with the Supreme Court's decision on gay marriage....if you call that activism then, in this case, I'll own that. But what about the conservative activism in regard to gay marriage? The Supreme Court has spoken it is the law of the land. This is NOT a liberal nor progressive court yet county clerks are refusing to issues marriage license's by wrapping themselves in religion. Did you not see the signs during the civil rights era "The Bible says Don't Mix the Races" cause I did.

But you haven't addressed the religious activism I encountered during my school years in the 50's. Remember the phrase Under GOD was added to the pledge of allegiance.... as well "In GOD We Trust" added to our money. Do you not remember the hate filled things said about Catholics during the Kennedy campaign and term. He was going to give the country to the Pope, we had large families to raise an army and we kept an armory in the basement of the church.

I have never been accused of being politically correct, just ask my former co-workers, so I think some of that stuff is just silly. Do I think we should seal the borders....yes I do and deport anyone here illegally. I scream at the TV when stories about "dreamers" and mixed status families are aired.

We are a product of our experience's....the religious bigotry I experienced shaped me.

I posted a number of links and quotes on trigger warnings and micro aggression and if you sincerely were scarred by your education experience, you will be SHOCKED and APPALLED at what is being done to young brains now.

Your comments on religious activism confuse me, and for the record, I am the product of 12 years of Catholic school, and attended in the 50s as well, so what you say I understand, but on one hand you sound offended by the addition of God, and then offended by the anti catholic feeling during the Kennedy campaign. They seem to come at cross purposes.

BUT all those "differences" were in the religion arena. To filter FACT from teaching so as not to offend or to filter DISCIPLINE and make it dependent on race just does not sit well with me.

And as an addition to something you said on the gentleman being disciplined for having the confederate flag in a parade. Be mindful, I am ok with what is happening in South Carolina, but that flag is not illegal in any way, so why should anyone anywhere be disciplined in any way for flying it. Isn't that free speech. Many of the anti US, anti police signs recently exhibited were defended on that principle. Point is you seemed to feel that suspension instead if firing made it ok, and I do not understand any discipline at all

My only point on the Under GOD and In God We Trust additions were to paint the picture of the 50's.... Just yesterday at an Amenity meeting I said the pledge with the inclusion no problem.

As an Irish Catholic my family experienced racism against the Irish....I was not old enough to see them but my father saw the signs "Irish need not apply". Fortunately for me I had strong aunts who bucked the system, one of which ended up as a high school principle in New Jersey during the 50's.

I read your links on trigger warnings. Personally, I have no problem with that but each to their own.

Can you enlighten us with the number and percentage of public and private elementary, middle, high schools, colleges and universities that are currently using these trigger warnings and micro-aggression on a regular and recurring basis?

Well, we DO have a disagreement them.

I have a real big problem with filtering FACTS through a filter that includes your color, heritage, etc. Facts are facts and need to be taught regardless of the students heritage, skin color or anything. It is scary that anyone would be ok with that kind of thing.

I have no idea of how many. Since this does not bother you then it makes no difference. The thread is about the assault on our freedoms, but if it doe not bother anyone, then I am just in error here.

I would not want my child to be educated but filter what he/she is taught because the facts are hard to hear.

I would not want discipline to be meted out dependent on the color of the child's skin. Rules are rules and all you do is teach children to EXPECT priveleges because of their skin color. I mush have misunderstood, as I thought our goal was the opposite. No wonder American children not only don't know much but certainly do not know why.....it appears we are protecting them.

YES I KNOW THE EXCEPTIONS...again the point of this thread, to me anyway, is an assault on freedoms. You can be disciplined if you display things that offend others...thought that was what free speech was about. You will not be taught anything that upsets you..that does not sound like my freedom to learn and be availed the facts. You will not be disciplined if black or whatever...guess that depends.

You can like it...I do not.

Yes, it does matter what the number and percentages of American public and private elementary, middle, high school, colleges and universities are teaching - and disciplining in those methods with trigger warnings and micro-aggressions.
It shows if this is a wide spread thing or just a microcosm. Please find and post if you are to be credible.

Have YOU ever had a very traumatic situation personally that seeing it again would make you re-live the pain? Those do happen. Joe Theissman had it happen after LT snapped his leg and he had to watch the slo-mo play on television over and over. Joe re-lived that horrible moment and never got over hearing that bone break. Rape trauma, burn trauma, or even taunting trauma can be debilitating for some people. Re-living it through film, books, or words can be unbearable.

As for different discipline, once again, you would have to show us the schools by location and how many times it happens for you to be credible on this claim.

As for displaying something that offends others and being punished being wrong since there is Freedom of Speech - imagine a high school teacher in downtown Detroit going to work wearing a tee shirt that has emblazoned "I Hate Muslims" on it. That teacher will not have a job any longer - but she was expressing Freedom of Speech, wasn't she. Right or wrong?
