Florida is the first state that is now going to require drug testing
for welfare!!! Some people (i.e. the ACLU) are crying that this is

unconstitutional. How is this unconstitutional?? It's completely legal..

that every other working person had to pass a drug test in order to have

a JOB that supports those on welfare!!

The drug test is going to cost $30, if you pass the state will reimburse the cost. This is going to cost a huge amount of money to catch a few drug users.
Why not only test those who have had a previous drug problem?

Hmmmmmm, in theory this sounds promising, and my first impulse was to applaud.

However, I'm assuming people requiring welfare will only need to be tested once, when they apply? And presumably, a person with a drug habit would know about the test, and could refrain from drugging a few days before the test. As Bogie pointed out, the cost could be exorbitant at $30 a test with few results.

Depends on the type of test. Some will pick up drugs (and masking agents) used in the last 6 months.

Seems to me it's this kind of paralysis analysis that keeps us from ever getting anything accomplished... There is ALWAYS something wrong with everything, but lets hear your alternative to supporting the folks who never intend to get a job. There is a limit to my benevolence...

It may cost money, that's fine by me!! Having worked in the "welfare" arena in the past, believe me, it is not a "few drug users"! It hovers around 45-50%. In some states, no background check can be done on people applying for welfare.

I once thought as some of you do, but being right in the thick of it, I learned my lesson very quickly! When in the employ of the TDHHS, I had to pass a drug test every year, but those people applying for welfare and other benefits did not!

I applaud Florida for being the first (of all 50, I hope)!

I'm not so sure. $30 saves paying a person benefits for 6 months; and if they fail again, for 3 more years. How many non-drug taking recipients tests would one failed applicants results "pay for"?

I think this is an extremely positive step, and I give our governor, Rick Scott, a standing ovation on principle alone. Provisions have been made to take care of a drug users children, if any, and that adds a measure of shame that has been long missing from the way some people choose to screw up their lives. Maybe this will deter a drug users offspring from following their parents example of experiencing little, if no, consequences for their behavior. It might bode positive outcomes for the future of our children.

It is appalling to see how many Loftier than Thou's have no consideration for all the little kids who deserve a life with parents who:

- are not so stupefied by drugs that they are not able to get or hold down a JOB.....Remember: Most JOB providers do drug testing because insurers give discounts for a drug-free workforce. Welfare periodic drug testing can help to assure a person is getting workforce preparation.

- are not so stupefied by drugs that they leave innocent babies, toddlers and school kids to fend for themselves and raise themselves on the street

- BREAK THE CYCLE of government dependency that is no longer a Safety Net that is to be temporary, but is a multi-generational lifestyle!

Good points. However the statements, "It's for the kids, 'stupid'," "Loftier than Thous" and finding it "appalling" that some folks don't agree, is why topics such as this belong in the opt-in political thread.

Kudos to the posters who made these same arguments without name-calling or insult to anyone.
