Just as a point of interest, we have been clients of Buffalo Ridge for a number of years.
So I asked them if a vet tech could administer the shots and they said yes.
However, I would still have to wait a number of weeks until I could bring them in. Huh???

Well, guess what? Bye, bye Buffalo Ridge!
They may have a lot of appointments going on. We really like the vets at Buffalo Ridge. And maybe it has something to do with supply and demand of the flu shots in this area of FL?

I don't think it has anything to do with supply and demand at this time. But I think Mrs. Robinson's dogs are out of state now. She doesn't say when this happened, but it could be that it was early on in the epidemic, before it reached Florida. If so, there could have been a supply problem.

Just guessing, however.

If a vet tech can administer the shot, there shouldn't be a time problem.
What would it take to give a shot? Three minutes or 5, from start to finish???

If I wanted to make an appointment for one of my dogs for some sort of issue (no, not life threatening) -- would I also have to wait "weeks?"
This kind of wait period should be an annoyance to anyone and most certainly should send up a red flag.
Just what is the "real" problem?

In addition, as I previously said, I was told that they had the serum on hand; there was no supply problem. Also, we are "out of season" so why would there be that kind of wait?

This situation only happened a month ago. We aren't speaking about back in the dark ages.

I had another situation with Buffalo Ridge a few weeks ago which I will not go into at this time. Perhaps that will become Chapter II at another time.

They say you're never too old to learn. Well, I think this situation has taught me a lesson.

Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital is owned by a person who is not a veterinarian.
This person is not on staff and relies on hired personnel to run the place because he is not there.
I will never knowingly seek the care of a vet who does not own his practice because I do not want to have to deal with "hired help" when it comes down to the care of my pets.

This is "old news" ! What or where have some of you dog owners been doing for the last 6-7 years? Do not give us some excuse about costs, because this is about a family member who needs your protection.

According to the staff at Buffalo Ridge Vet Hospital, there have been no cases in The Villages and only one, in Altamonte Springs close by. Not the scare everyone thought it might be.

Our dog received the flu vaccination in CA and still got the flu because it was 'a different flu'. Not sure if we are going to vaccinate both of them again or not....

Here is how my vet in Ontario explained why dogs should be vaccinated for the canine influenza virus (CIV):

As with most vaccinations (rabies being a notable exception... it always works), protection is primarily gained by the whole population being protected. If 100% of the dogs are vaccinated, the medication will work 100% of the time but if only 40% are vaccinated, the success plummets to about 40%. Despite that, the dogs that are treated will get a significantly less serious version of the illness which is worth considering because the real danger of CIV is that it can lead to 104+ degree fevers and pneumonia.... clearly a danger if the dog is compromised in any way. We have young, healthy dogs so they are in the least "at risk" population but we will get the shots when we return to FL for the same reason I vaccinated my children... I want them to stay safe and we care about the health of the whole dog population around us. If everyone does this, we will not have a problem here.

I'm assuming you're kidding, but in case you're not, it's for the protection of the other dogs who are at the groomer's at the same time.

Just because there are no reported cases of this dog flu in the area, that is not a reason not to vaccinate your dog.

Dog owners, and I include myself, are not scared. A responsible dog owner will do the right things for their pet as a potential preventive or certainly, to lessen the effects of the illness, if contracted.

That is no longer the true. Read the Daily Sun this morning. There are now four cases.

also behind the scenes "dog virus" is common at animal control & humane societies during the summer months when they need an "excuse" to clean out the kennels. A little known & hidden fact of life and death.

Yes, this is very true. The flu virus and vaccine have been talked about within the circles of Vets, AKC, local and national dog clubs. If you didn't get enough information from the article you can also go to U Tube and look up dog flu virus 2017. Vets will talk about it, and what to do, including the symptoms. Yes, the number 1 toy dog fell ill to this in Florida just recently.
As the paper states, many of these incidents go unreported, and the vets aren't allowed to give out statistics to the public Walgreen's is vaccinating pets at Colony and maybe other places with Walgreen's as well, this SATURDAY. go TO SHOTVET.COM. NOT SURE if you need to sign up or just show up. Ask the manager of the store. That's July 15th shots for your dogs and vaccinations, if you can't wait for weeks to get an appt. at Buffalo Ridge or elsewhere.
Keep your dogs OUT OF THE DOG PARKS UNTIL further notice.
