Thanks, Bare! It was a fun bit of serendipity in the midst of a big packing job. And I didn't have to think very long to know whether "to keep or toss" that item. Easiest decision I had to make! :$::p
She will NOT disappoint.
Whoops. I meant to answer Bare about you C.
Bare is right about you. You are the genuine item, yes you are.

Sorry to change the subject, but I have an issue. What do you do when your husband isn't interested in sex as much as your are? We've been recently married for 5 years. He stays up at night watching TV then comes to bed around 3:00 A.M. He gets up before I do.

I assume you've talked to him about it. Since you're both retired, how about afternoons? I'm not sure what age you are, but losing interest in carnal pursuits is not uncommon, and the makers of Viagra are laughing all the way to the bank.

I thought it was such a considerate thing to do. It really boosted my morale. It's the kind of thing I think about doing, but then life gets busy and time passes. CFrance is the real deal!

Any chance he would go get some testosterone?

That's a good suggestion. I don't think Viagara works unless the desire is there. At any rate, consulting a doctor would be the way to go, if he is willing.

I just wanted to say a public thank you to CFrance.
It's amazing to me the friendships I've made through TOTV, back when I joined the website in 2007, and continuing through today. I've had great luck in meeting some truly wonderful women. As a matter of fact, I'm expecting one of them to visit me in Canada this summer, how great is that!
Some of the people that I consider friends, are people I've yet to meet! There are some women who attract me like a shining beacon, simply because I know that they share my love of animals.
Anyway, the other day I received a card mailed to me in Canada, and a Canadian $10 bill from CFrance, whom I've never met. She was in Michigan packing up her house and she found some Canadian money. And she was kind enough to take pity on me for all my online whining about my July knee replacement. She enclosed the money in a get-well card. What a nice surprise, and such a morale booster, right when I needed it. What a wonderful, considerate friend she is! I can hardly wait to meet her.
It was a truly lovely thing to do. Cudos! I love how nice people are here. You really get to know people's hearts without being confused by the 'outter shell' of people. I love that. Sort of how a dog sees people- heart only. (I mean no disrespect to non-animal people but animal people will know what I am talking about).
How DOES anyone get someone's address or email here in a discreet way? Or does one just have to ask outright?
Bare, hope you are feeling better every day.

Different people just have different levels of need. If this is a change for him maybe you could talk about it or get him to discuss the change with his doctor (men usually aren't too keen on this). If he goes to bed that late and gets up that early (before you) how does he function during the day on so little sleep? Maybe that is part of the problem. He must be exhausted.

I PM'd Bare and said I ran across something I'd like to send her, and she trusted me enough to give me her address. Now that privacy is such a big issue, I would never ask a third party for someone's telephone number or address. Instead I would ask the third party to ask that person to contact me.
Bu we do kinda get to know one another here, fer sure.

This is a very difficult subject to discuss, there are so many issues involved and being married only five years must make it very uncomfortable for him, as well as you. If you search the internet there are some excellent sites which give medical reasons for this problem. Of course, the best thing for him to do is to talk to his doctor and get a complete and thorough medical check up to see if there is an underlying medical problem. BUT, again, difficult for him because men do not like to admit that their "manhood" is going ........................

There are doctors who specialize in this area. However I doubt most men would go willingly to talk about their lack of sex drive. I'd think that most men who go to a sex doctor are given an ultimatum by their partner. It's probably the least favorite topic for any man to discuss.
There was a movie a couple of years back, I didn't see it. I think it starred Meryl Streep. I think it was about this subject. Anyone know the movie I mean? If you rented this movie, it might get some conversation going. On the other hand, it might just really annoy your husband.
You probably have two choices: either decide you can live with the situation and be happy, or talk your husband into seeing a medical professional.

Bare, The movie is called "Hope Springs" -- excellent movie. Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones play a long married couple whose children are grown, and Meryl Streep wants to bring the romance back to their marriage, so they attend an intensive marriage counseling program. Steve Carrell is their marriage counselor. Rent it!

Girls, girls, girls! After "the change" astroglide becomes a bedside necessity. I also like KY"X". It is silicon based and lasts and lasts.
Like Jeff Foxworthy said "It will get a Cadillac into a dog house"
I'll let you think about that for a bit! ;-)

If this is a change for him, he could have "low T". Low testosterone. It is more common than most men think. It can cause moodiness, lack of sex drive and lack of interest in other activities. Low level depression. Easily diagnosed with a blood test and easily treated with testosterone given as a body rub daily or an injection every 2 weeks.
Certainly worth checking into. It can ruin his quality of life. ( and yours!)

I don't know what the collective "we" think, but I will go out on a limb and tell you what I think. My life is very different from yours, been married a long time to the same guy ............. but, if I suggested to him to shower together at this stage I think he would think I had gone crazy. We were very romantic and fixated on each other in our more youthful days, but through the years that has slowly died down to a "companionship" level, and I have a gut feeling that is what is happening to your relationship. I am assuming that your five year marriage is a second for both and (in my opinion) you are not going to get the same level of youthful fervor that you would have had as young marrieds.
There are many things that affect a mans "drive" and one of the worst is if he has been through chemo or a serious illness. As the other posters on this board have told you, he needs a full and thorough medical check and until that happens there is not much more you can do. Your nervousness and attitude could also be attributing to his inability, he knows you are not satisfied with the way things are and if you are pressuring him to perform this is going to deflate his ego (and elsewhere) even more.
What about talking to your gyno and see what she thinks. I am sure a really good female doctor could help put your mind at rest much quicker than we can.
What about this - sit yourself down and assess the situation: You are no longer alone, you have a guy, most probably a great guy, you have had five great years together so far and you really want to stay with this guy until death do us part, so you might need to sort of accept the changes that are happening and make the best of a good thing.
Just my opinion ................ and I am very level headed and try to make the best of every situation.

In our house, jobs are divided into blue jobs and pink jobs. Outside stuff is blue for him, and inside stuff like laundry is pink. I always feel a sense of satisfaction when I do a blue job.
I have swarms of wasps this time of year. I went to Walmart for some wasp catchers, and of course they were sold out. My friend told me how to make "home-made" wasp catchers out of plastic bottles. Yesterday's model didn't work well. I stabbed myself twice putting the holes in the plastic bottle. And in the process of hanging it up, I got stung by a wasp. And I made the holes too big so the wasps all enjoyed the sugared water and then escaped
So today I made two more .. obviously practice makes perfect. The wasps are lining up to get into my two wasp catchers, I've caught at least 35 of the little devils, way cool. Girls rock.

All I can say is, "You go, Girl!". I'm very proud of you. That's a lot of wasps to rid yourself of in one fell swoop! I'm sorry you got stung, though, and I hope it doesn't hurt too much. I know how proud you must feel when you do a 'blue' job. I have never heard it called that before but I like it. Makes you feel accomplished, doesn't it?
In our house my husband does all of the jobs that involve putting things together because I stink at it. Even putting 25 piece kids puzzles together is a challenge for me. Just perceptually impaired I guess and it isn't gonna happen. Well, our vacuum couldn't keep itself together until we moved this spring and I was forced to replace it so when I brought the new one home, to my horror, it had several pieces in the box. I actually attempted to assemble it myself. I ran into a bit of trouble even though frankly a bliind idiot could have done it (no political slur meant for the visually impaired or low IQ people). I called Customer Service and they talked me through it. Seems I needed to slam one piece into another with the force of a jackhammer to keep it in there. When DH got home he was really impressed and I never told hiim I called Customer Service. However he couldn't remove the short stair cleaning piece from the handle and neither could I. He tried to convince me to leave it that way and use the smaller stair cleaning piece to clean ALL the rugs in my house but I wasn't going to go with that. HE had to go back to the store for help. I loved it but kept the smirk on the inside.

Your story is very funny, especially your politically correct clarifications!
I am convinced that men and women's brains are just wired differently. Fireboy can't cook at all - he finds it very difficult to even boil corn. But he can build/repair/assemble anything. If I can get him motivated! I am totally incapable of assembling anything, so I'm very impressed with your vacuum assembly story. Well done. I'm quite sure I couldn't have done it, even with help from Customer Service.
Have you moved to TV yet? If you're living in TV already, are you going to Gracie's lunch? I'll be sorry to miss it.

I think women are more naturally detail oriented and meticulous. Some men are super tidy, but I think most men could drink a coffee on the patio, and then walk away from the dirty cup.

^^^^^ Agree, my husband is the neat and tidy guy (he is an Engineer) but I still have to pick up after him....not complaining just remarking.
ON another subject....I know this was discussed in the past; but want to check to see if anyone has done it or not!!! I am talking about permanent make-up.
I am thinking about doing permanent eyeliner...You see I have no eyes unless I paint them on. Now I know there are some issues with it....I will do it at a plastic surgeons office locally (I am up north) and I know it can fade and need touched up; but wonder what happens when sagging and wrinkles get even more developed than they already are.
I believe Kelly Rippa did it and loves it....she also did something with her eyelashes....not sure what though....but cost for vanity will be limited for me.
Anyone have any comments?

I'm not experienced, but I've thought about permanent eyeliner. Surely eyelids don't sag that much? I'm a big chicken, I like for others to try things first so I can see the finished product. I think it's done by tattoo? SSmith, can you please do it and let us all know the result? :girlneener:
I know several women who have permanent eyebrows, but it doesn't look natural. Although I've read that eyebrows can be done to look natural by "feathering in individual strokes". I'm fascinated by anything that is easy-peasy and improves appearance.

I have several months to go (arghhh!) still in the process of putting the house on the market and getting it sold. I would LOVE to be at Gracie's for lunch and would definitely extend the invitation to myself (lol), although she is a wonderfully gracious woman who I know would extend it to me. I will think about everyone having fun while I try to whittle through my home and try to forget that there is still a bunch of stuff to get rid of before I am finished here. I feel like I'd like to pack up a couple of boxes and walk out of the rest. I didn't LOOK like a hoarder but I guess I was on some level. Jeez, I have a LOT of STUFF! It will be very freeing to see it all go somewhere. I am very much looking forward to the day when I CAN go. It seems like so much fun to get everyone together. Maybe I'll make a virtual quiche or something :o)
I have to laugh at everyone's posting about husbans. It's like most of us have the same one that sneaks into each house and acts the same way. Good men who mean well who don't act like US! And I thought I was the only one, lol.
And as for permenant make up, nope, can barely deal with temporary make up! Good luck with it.

This is a sweeping generalization ....
I often think that men are like dogs: straightforward, anxious to please but often perplexed about what is wanted, happy with a big meal and a soft bed.
I think that women are more like cats: changeable, fascinating, smart, picky, moody, unpredictable, sometimes more interested in playing games than in being cooperative. No wonder men find it hard to figure us out.

I always think it's fun to share recommendations about girly things that actually work! There have been a few threads recently about eyebrow and eyeliner tattoos. I think I may try permanent eyeliner in January, still a bit nervous.
Years ago I was looking for a hair mousse that actually added volume. Over the years, I had purchased so many expensive hair volumizing products from beauty salons, with negligible results. A friend recommended "big sexy hair" which can be purchased in a drugstore in a red can. It's the only product that has ever worked for me.
Anyway, this is a post about a product called StimuLashFusion which I recently purchased, based on rave reviews from friends. It's not mascara, you apply it at night along your lash line after you remove your makeup. I believe it is available internationally. It does not require a doctors prescription, and doesn't come with all the scary warnings that accompanied Latisse when it first came on the market.
The cashier in the store where I bought StimuLashFusion was a huge fan of the product. She had on mascara, and looked as if she was wearing false eyelashes! She used it daily, and her lashes grew so much she had to trim them with scissors so she could wear glasses. A year later, she still uses it once a week and she says she will use it forever! A friend bought it a month ago and she says her lashes are already thicker.

Sounds like a truly amazing product. Wow, I wonder if I could rub it all over my head! Sure hope I don't do it sleepily one morning and forget in the shower and accidentally rub it all over my legs instead. UGH!

Out of pure curiosity I looked at this posting and I really am amused by it really. I have noticed over a period of time that wives refer to their husbands as " Hubby ".
So on a agreed simple " Trial " period we ( Wife and I ), I referred to her as " Wiffey " and Wiffey referred to me as " Hubby ". It lasted approx. 2+ hours and honestly we went back to our usual honest ways. Now why do you refer to your husband as " Hubby " ?? Really a simple question.?? I really would like to know.
Referring to your husband/wife although thoughtful in this way is a brush off and meaningless sort of like Hi Guy's. My suggestion go back to the good ole days Hi Sweetheart, Hey Hon, Dear, My Sweetheart, etc. but Hubby...come..on used really, once, honestly once , too often. JUST A SUGGESTION

I think you can buy wella products at Sallys hair supply. If you find out what color your hairdresser uses you could bring it to a salon and they can use it on ur hair. Or if you want find out the color and and have someone do it for you. I love wella products they are not harsh on your hair.

 I'd like to take time to respond to your post, but I'm heading out now, golfing with Hubby again today.

When I was working, a lot of the younger guys in our office would refer to their wives as "their old lady" as a term of endearment! Never could understand that one.

Jack. Why don't you come to the next Crispers meeting which is held on the third Friday of the month at Crispers Restaurant just down a ways from Publix on 466. It is held at three. You will meet a bunch of TOTV posters there. And we can all talk, talk, talk,
And if you are feeling sad, Please talk to your minister or doctor right away.
A lot of us feel sad at times and need to talk. You have recently lost your wife and of course you need to talk. And want to talk.

Jean, I haven't heard that expression in years! It used to be quite common. It always made me wince when someone referred to his wife as "the old lady". I think it was meant in a "possessive/affectionate" way, but :yuck:

Thanks for starting this ladies-only thread!
I searched for "henna" and found some posts from 2008, so nothing more recent. I would like to find a salon that either uses henna hair color products or allows the customer to bring their own product.
The large salons make you use their hair color products. I can see where it's a liability issue, in case they apply your product and you get mad at them if something happens.
I have chemical- and fragrance-sensitivity. Some salons don't offer ammonia-free hair color. I've gone to a few salons that use Redken's Chromatics color, which is ammonia-free. However, it has a fragrance, even when I have the stylist use my fragrance-free shampoo, which I'm allowed to bring in. However, they tell me only their shampoos lock in the color better, which makes sense.
Some other posts stated that gals were concerned about the dye being applied so frequently. I also wonder how that will affect us all, since there have been reports over the years that hair dye can cause cancer. I wasn't entirely gray when I moved here 1-1/2 years ago, and now am all white. I'm not ready to go "au natural" right now, but may have to. I would appreciate any suggestions about non-toxic hair color products.
Thanks!

I will be very interested in hearing responses. Some of my friends have gone natural and on them, it looks great. I'm just not quite there yet.
I think we all are concerned about frequent use of hair dye. If there are non-toxic products for permanent color, I'd love to know about them. The only ones I've seen are temporary, and they quickly wash out.

Hi Barefoot,
Thanks for your reply! I'm hoping that others post to this thread, too.
I used to use something called Water Works that I bought at Sally's Beauty Supply. It lasted about 6-8 weeks, but I wasn't as gray. It's a powder in a package--no peroxide or ammonia, and turns into a gel after you add water to the powder. Once I became more gray/white, it was too difficult for me to apply it by myself, especially in the back. I don't want to trouble hubby to be my stylist, nor does he want to be! :-)
I asked several salons if they would use this product on me (if I provided it), but they're not allowed to do so. Surprisingly, many local salons don't offer ammonia-free hair color. For the past year, the stylists have applied Redken's Chromatics, which is ammonia-free. I have tried other color products and stylists, and haven't found the perfect match yet.
Recently I was at Lake Nutrition Center, the health-food store in La Plaza Grande. They have a book for ordering HerbaTint (ammonia-free), but I'd like to see the actual package, read ingredients, and see the hair samples. I called HerbaTint's toll-free #, and the gal said that's available at Whole Foods Market. The closest one is in Orlando, so I'm thinking of making a trip there. Also, there's an organic hair color called NaturTint that's ammonia-free.

Hi,
I used Tracey at Tuscany to cut my hair.
She did a very bad job. After she cut my hair it did not fall into place, nor was it cut evenly. It looked more like it was chopped off. The unevenness was quite noticeable after I washed it.
When I had left the salon after she styled it - you would not know how bad the haircut was, it wasn't until the first time I washed it that I could see how uneven it was.
I did call Tuscany, and the gal who answered the phone listened to what I had to say about the haircut, and then asked if I would like to make another appointment.
I was very disappointed.

I always think it's fun to share recommendations about girly things that actually work! There have been a few threads recently about eyebrow and eyeliner tattoos. I think I may try permanent eyeliner in January, still a bit nervous.
Further to this post recommending an eyelash enhancer, I just visited an ophthalmologist. I was having a problem with my upper eyelid, purple, swollen and tender.
He diagnosed me as having a blocked tear duct so now I'm doing hot and cold compresses, antibiotic drops, etc. It's the first time in my life I've ever had a blocked tear duct. Could it be connected with the eyelash enhancer? Hmmmm. Another product on my discard list, just in case.
I guess it doesn't pay to fool with Mother Nature.

I've seen the results of some of the lash enhancer products and the results are incredible.
But ... I was using a lash enhancer, and then I got a blocked tear duct.
I ended up being treated by an Opthamologist.
I'm not sure if my problem was created by using a lash enhancer. Possibly not.
But now I'm wary of them.

I am wondering if anyone has a magic solution for nails that are splitting. I'm thinking of a nutritional supplement. We used to think gelatin helped, but I'm not sure if that does any good. I'm sure it's not a lack of calcium because I get plenty. And my hair seems to be healthy.
For a while I had gel nails. I loved looking at ten perfect nails. But the time spent in salons really got to me. And when the gel nails went, my real nails were bumpy and awful. So I patiently waited for my own nails to grow out.
I have a bucket full of nail hardeners. But I googled it and read that it is bad to use nail hardeners, because you have to use polish remover to take it off. And apparently polish remover is extremely hard on nails. The consensus on google seems to be ... use hand cream frequently.
So for the last month I've been using hand cream frequently. And I was thrilled because it really seemed to make a difference. Then my nails started splitting again. Maybe it's just another one of those aging things. Sigh.

No, it's not aging. I've had splitting nails all my life. I heard biotin was good, so I started taking that last winter--2500 mcg's a day. Supposed to be good for thinning hair too. I notice a difference in my hair, but not my nails. Once they get to a certain length, they split.
I had gel nails too and also got tired of all the time & $. And when I took them off, my nails were so weak and separated from the nail bed.
My neighbor is using a nail hardener, and her nails look great (online, about $7 per bottle). So I've been using it too. So far my nails don't look as good as hers. But... they look good if I keep them covered with the nail hardener and keep them too short to split. So I guess I'll have to live with that.

Oh goodness, I used Renee winter 2013. I forgot I recommended her ... glad you liked her Roz. Renee is a nice gal and I do like the salon. And the prices aren't exorbitant like a lot of salons.
Winter of 2014 I started out using Victoria. But then I moved to a different salon because the kind of color they were using at Victoria Hair really started bothering me. I think I must have developed an allergy to it. Plus the information on my card was wrong, and I kept getting a color I didn't like.
So I moved back to Urban Hair in Oxford, over by Bargains and Treasures. And I had good results from downstairs Whitney.
I also just started going to the downstairs Whitney.

Anyway, uujudy, I sure hope you like downstairs Whitney. It was actually CFrance that recommended her to me. KathieI really likes upstairs Whitney.
Downstairs Whitney was more expensive than Victoria Hair and it took a lot longer, but I liked the results much, much better. I will be going back to her when I return in the Fall.

I won't be due for new highlights for a few months, but I plan to have her do them when it's time. I just love my new haircut & I agree that we should share the names of people we feel are worth recommending. It only took me 5 years to find one who can cut my hair! Thanks again!

Sigh.
I have always had weak, splitting nails. I used to have acryllic nails but gave them up when Mom and I built our home in TV!
Last year, I stopped at the booth that sells nail files at LSL's Vendor Night. She recommended their nail files and Nailtiques. I bought Nailtiques at CVS for around $9. My nails got stronger but they still split.
I started using Perfect Formula about two weeks ago and I can already see a difference in my nails. I'm using the Strong Nail Strengthening Therapy, the pink gel, and the Strong Nail Daily Moisturizer. I got my kit on QVC but I looked and you can get Perfect Formula at PF's website and on Amazon. I think Ulta sells it too. It is a little pricey! Don't put it on too thick or it peels off! I do think the crystal nail files also helped.

Sable ... OK, that is encouraging information.
BUT, one question .. Do you still need to remove Perfect Formula with nail polish remover?
Because I think remover damaged my nails more than any type of nail growth solution helped.

Yes. I bought one that said it strengthened your nails. So far, it seems okay.

Setting aside illness, part of the brittle/peeling nail problem is menopause, part is heredity and part is environmental.
I use olive oil too- all over myself- or apricot, walnut, avocado…. I buy those at GNC or health food stores. Less expensive than lotions or creams and no chemicals. Particularly good applied after a shower- it soaks right in.
Menopause lessens our ability to retain water- so we have to remember to keep hydrated- that affects our nails too, although we may not realize it.
Many cleaning products, detergents, shampoos, shower gels, have harsher chemicals in them than we may know. They can affect your nail beds.
I have long steered away from ingredients such as Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Laurel Sulfate/ Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
Do your legs itch the day after shaving? Does your scalp itch? It may well be the product…. there is very little true dandruff- it is more a reaction to what is put on the scalp.
Acetone polish remover is often a culprit- fast working, but too harsh for those with delicate nails. Follow that with an alcohol spray (which many salons do) or a soak in detergent water and you have stripped the mantle of your nail.
I wish they would use witch hazel.
I do my own mani/pedi. I use ONLY non-acetone polish remover and regular polish- not gel. Non-acetone takes a little longer to remove regular polish, but is much safer. I wash it off with olive oil based soap and follow with witch hazel before re-polishing.
As some may know, i had my own salon for many years. That's how I had my manicurists do it.
If the nails are compromised, a good product to seal them while they grow is

Does anyone know if there is a salon in the area that sells Sebastian hair products. I use Sebastian Volupt shampoo and cream rinse, as well as their Volupt volume building spray before blow drying. I sometimes use Sebastian Mousse Forte and one of their hairsprays called Shaper.
Yes. That's a lot of product. But the sizes are reasonable so they last a long time. Even though the products do have salon prices, I find them to be a bit less expensive than some other salon lines.
Sebastian, I am pretty sure, is a part of Wella which is a part of Procter and Gamble. But not every Wella salon carries Sebastian in their product line.
Sebastian works better for me than anything else I have found when trying to get extra volume.
I can schlep the stuff from back home but it would be nice to find it here.
PS: (In case anybody is wondering) Yes. My hair still moves. That is another reason I really like these products. :)

Check with your local manicurist. She might know of some product that will work. Embalming fluid is what I used when I was younger (dated a funeral director). Makes them very hard. Oils will soften your nails. I have a bath & beauty product company and have done much research on the subject. BTW, the best oil for your skin is a light one, like jojoba oil, or sweet almond. Stay away from olive oil. Shea butter for your feet.
Uptown Girl
08-22-2014, 07:59 PM
Stay away from olive oil? Oh my gosh, Why?
It is a natural antioxidant.
In addition, the vitamin E (olive oil has it!) can also absorb the energy from ultraviolet (UV) light. Thus, it plays important roles in photoprotection, preventing UV-induced free radical damage to skin.
I use a water soluble form of Olive oil to cleanse my face. Exclusively. I have used a refined virgin olive oil as my face moisturizer- twice a day- exclusively for over 8 years. I regularly apply my cosmetics (eye makeup, etc.) over the moisturizer- no problem-o.
My skin still looks pretty darn good, being the old Bat that I am.
I buy these products online at DHC. I have mentioned that source here in previous posts. These products have no odor.
I use regular olive oil (the food grade) for the rest of my body- and often use other seed or nut oils as an alternative. They are natural- have no preservatives and very much agree with my skin. Used appropriately, I am not an oily mess. Nor are my clothes, towels or sheets.
Shea butter for feet? Better put socks on afterward or you will leave footprints everywhere in your house- I found that the REAL stuff is lumpy, greasy, does NOT penetrate and has a distinctive odor that is, to me, musty. I found it more trouble than it was worth- and the pure stuff is not inexpensive.
Embalming fluid for Nails? Back when I was a teenager, there was a liquid, brush on product sold for nails that did indeed contain formaldehyde. Embalming fluid. That was some scary stuff, in my opinion. Pickled nails may be hard, but can't be healthy. If you had some cracks or splits in your cuticle, that liquid penetrated into your body. With repeated use the surface skin of the cuticle died.
DruannB
08-22-2014, 08:43 PM
Well, I was young and stupid. I no longer use embalming fluid. Olive oil is a heavier oil, ideal for soap making, but not the best oil to apply directly to your skin. It doesn't allow your skin to breathe as well as, say, Hazelnut oil, which is what I use in my facial moisturizer. I never use shea butter straight either, but people who don't want to buy extra ingredients do--and use socks. I whip shea butter with other products to cut down on the grease and it makes a great body butter. And many quality oils contain vitamin E, or you can buy vitamin E and add it to your concoctions, so you don't have to buy olive oil. Probably the best oil available just at a grocery store would be extra virgin coconut oil. Check out my website, Home | timeout4me (http://www.timeout4me.com), where I blog about ingredients. I also send out a monthly newsletter with DIY recipes. And I'm sure your skin looks great. Half the battle is not ignoring your skin.

Bare,
I don't have any products to sell- so I have no horse in this race. I am sure Druann has wonderful products she has formulated, is proud of and has had great success with.
Here's what I do with the DHC olive oil: (DHC is a Japanese company, by the way- I have no affiliation)
I use one squirt of the cleanser on my fingers, rub it all over my face and neck, then rinse with warm water and follow with a light scrub of warm, wet washcloth. This olive oil is water-soluble, meaning it WILL rinse off with no problem.
If I am going into the shower, I put the cleanser on and wash it off once I am in there. Just stick my face under the shower head, rub with my hands, then follow with the washcloth.
I pat my face with a towel ( just a bit) then apply one squirt of the olive oil moisturizer, while my face is still dewey- moist. I put it everywhere but my forehead and nose- that does well left alone. This means I put it around my eyes too.
I let it soak in, and when my face is air dry, ( a few moments) I apply my makeup.
I have not had a clogged pore since I began using these two products.
For me- the key is the warm, wet washcloth. I keep a stack of white ones (purchased in a bundle at Costco) and use a fresh one each time I cleanse my face. I have two dozen tucked in my bath cabinet. After use, I wring them out hang them over the edge of my utility laundry tub until dry, then toss them in the laundry.
Yep, I have a little extra laundry because of it- but they give me gentle exfoliation, and using them assures that all traces of makeup and cleanser are gone.
The products are not the cheapest, but each bottle lasts a long time- months. Two bottles under my sink- not a whole slew of things. :)
I can only say I get great results- and I am not easily persuaded.
One more thing- the DHC olive oil moisturizer has improved my eyelashes. :coolsmiley:

I had the worst nails. Worst! They were always breaking and splitting.
So I used nail hardeners. I have them in every color, even plain with sparklies.
Then I read on several medical websites that nails were starving for moisture if they split.
And that the worst thing to do was wear nail hardeners, remove them with nail polish remover and reapply.
They suggested a simple solution - every time you wash your hands, you MUST also cream them. Every time.
So I did this for a couple of weeks, no change.
I did it for a month, my nails started to improve.
I've now been doing it for three months.
Wow, what a difference. My nails are long and strong and luscious.
Try it, you will NOT be disappointed!

My nails are thin and brittle and except for when I was taking prenatal vitamins a million years ago, have always been like this. I wash my hands a zillion times a day it seems. Maybe I will have to start keeping a bottle of lotion next to each sink and trying this. I didn't realize at all that my nails were starving for moisture.
I hardly ever used hand cream .. Just couldn't be bothered.
Now I keep hand cream everywhere .. By each sink, in my car, in my bag, I am always moisturizing.
I would not have believed the difference it makes!
I cannot remember my nails ever being strong and healthy.

Okay, I have a question. Since you're having to moisturize constantly, does that mean you cannot use polish on your nails? I am confused, because using polish on your nails means you have to use nail polish remover. So if I want my nails to become stronger and not split, does that mean they will never have nail polish on them?
I had the same question as CFrance. I assume you use the cream on bare nails?

Yes. If you want strong nails, polish and nail polish remover are NOT your friends.
Because you are moisturizing the whole nail bed, not just the top of the nail.
It did take me two or three months to get from weak, splitting nails to strong healthy nails. Patience is required!
I honestly thought I was just genetically programmed to go through life with weak nails.
Occasionally, if I want my nails to look pretty, I take an old toothbrush and scrub my nails with lemon juice mixed with salt.
It makes the white parts really white. And then I make sure to moisturize again.
It makes my nails look like "pink and whites" that I used to get with gel nails.
If I wanted to wear nail polish, I probably could, if I made sure I removed it and then kept moisturizing.
But I find now I want things in my life to be simple.

You might want to try Urban Hair in Oxford, over by Bargains and Treasures.
Just south of CR 466. I had really good results from downstairs Whitney.
She is honest and if you give her a call, she'll tell you if she knows how to cut a shag.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now I have a hair question......
I bet Uptown Girl or someone out there knows the answer.
I have developed severe allergies to all kinds of hair color. So I've decided to grow out my natural color.
If it were all gray, I would go blonde and let it grow out gradually. But it is about 60% dark and 40% grey. Really awful.
Right now I have it streaked, but you can still notice the grey/dark roots growing out and I hate it.
I don't want to cut it short, which is what a lot of friends have done to aid in the "going grey" process.
Is there any way to tastefully grow out my natural hair color, or am I doomed to look like a bag lady for the next year or two?

Hi Bare-
I faced the same situation. The options aren't great.
There are a few products (I found online) that can help blend the demarcation line, but they are temporary cosmetics- and wash off. One is like a mascara wand- basically for around your face/hairline- one is a shaker of colored fibers- more for the top of your head. If you follow it with a shot of hairspray, it stays put.
I used these when I was still working and had to be in the public eye. It was a pain, but got me through for a time.
When bopping around casually, I wore a low ponytail and a baseball hat.
I wanted to get a wig, but friends and family talked me out of it.
Eventually, I decided to cut my hair into a pixie to get rid of the majority of color. My hair was originally below my shoulders. The pixie was a shock- to myself and to others- and I still had to deal with dark tips, which now looked awful. No way to camouflage the ends.
It took well over a year before I liked my hair again. My hair is now silver-white and I have embraced the look. My husband says he likes it a lot. (My avatar is how I USED to look- a hundred years ago!)
In retrospect- I would get a great looking wig while transitioning to your new natural color. Better yet, I'd get two, to always have a fresh one handy. And I'd keep it my secret.

The secret to a proper shag is not precision layering, but being expert at doing a razor cut.
However, razor cutting is random and can never be repeated exactly. So, the first haircut may be brilliant- but when you go a second time, the stylist is working with 'leftovers'. THAT is where the talent comes in. Unless the stylist can navigate well and circumvent the irregularities, the next shag will fall short of being spectacular.
I would suggest instead, a precision haircut throughout, using a razor cut at the perimeter only- around the neck and face. That will give you the wispy edges (which can easily be reproduced) that you desire. :)
Sorry, I do not have stylist recommendations. I cut my own hair.

Uptown Girl, thank you for the information. I was not thinking about it being a razor cut. That makes perfect sense.
Even though the shag is alive and well in various forms in pictures I have seen, I don't see it much in real life. I have to think razor cutting takes a lot of experience and artistry in order to do it right. That is interesting about cutting a shag after the first one.
The shag is my favorite haircut ever.

Bare, after having brain surgery and then subsequently having a severe allergic reaction to the drugs they gave me, I was very frightened to put color on my hair but I found a vegetable based color at Whole Foods Market that I used and it seemed to work as far as not increasing the allergic reaction. Have you crossed over from needing only semi-permanent color to needing permanent color?
Semi-permanent color is when they put it all over at the same time and the color gradually fades until next time.
Permanent color is a stronger process. It is a retouch of the roots only, as they grow in.
We can get by with semi-permanent for a long time but one day the white just gets to be too much and will turn pink.
Sometimes, even with a permanent color process, white hair can be particularly resistant to grabbing color. But there are salon products that should work. Wella is one of the best. It has been around for a long time and can work on even the most stubborn white roots. I think it has more pigment than some of the other salon brands.
Please consult with a professional though because I am not one. But I know what you mean. We do not go gently, do we. A good colorist also has to be a good chemist. It's all about the process. Good luck. :)

I agree, Wella is one of the best. In order to cover my gray, they must use a double pigment die, and Wella's is best for me. Urban Hair Salon across from Walmart on Wedgewood uses Wella. A single pigment only mildly covers my gray roots, after which I look two-toned.

Because my hair isn't silver, it's "salt and pepper", I wrongly thought I could grow it out with just a lot of highlights. But the roots are very obvious.
I actually have a wig that I really like a lot. But pinning up my real (shoulder length) hair under a wig with bobby pins and then a "net" is hot and itchy and uncomfortable.
I think the solution is getting my hair cut in a pixie. Did you grow your hair long again after it turned silver?

BBB, that was the point of the hair discussion. To bore the men silly. Alhough your story of pink was fascinating. ;D ;D Now, they're gone and we can talk about face creams that work, sex, lip plumpers, good places to shop for clothes in TV, etc.
For instance Spanx .... (if you haven't tried it, you're missing out).If I use a lip plumper I get a fever blister. Always.
I think not going gently, not going grey or white, is the best image enhancing practice for us. I don't care how beautiful the natural hair is...dyed is better for us.:spoken:

I agree. Going gray isn't something I want to do at all. But I suddenly developed an extreme allergy to hair color, and I've tried at least five different types at hair salons.
I am so allergic that I want to tear my scalp off when they put on the color, and for three weeks after.
Plus I've always thought it wasn't a really good thing to color hair right next to your brain because some of the bad stuff must be absorbed? (Although it hasn't stopped me in the past).
I've never heard of getting a fever blister from lip plumpers. But then I've never found a lip plumper that actually works either.

Right after I wrote that I had to leave and felt so bad about the know-it-all tone of my post. Of course, all those chemicals we use so close to the brain cannot be good for us. And truthfully, I really do like long, mixed, or grey or white hair....it's kind of whimsical....a little youth, earthy...
Yes, the lip plumper gives me a blister and also those long-lasting lipsticks if I use them several days in a row.

Any chance your lip plumper has been contaminated? Or there is a chemical in it that your body can't tolerate. Try an all-natural product. I make lip stains that have no chemicals or preservatives. If you are interested, check out my website: Home | timeout4me (http://www.timeout4me.com). I hope to get a brick and mortar store when we move to TV, or at bare minimum sell at the Farmer's Markets.

No, I now keep it short - kind of like a tousled boy cut with choppy bangs…. It works best in layers for me (my silver is not uniform) fits my face, and is easy to manage.
I can make it look sophisticated ( for special occasions- like weddings) but mostly do a random piece-y thing for everyday. A little gel or hairspray helps to hold the fullness at the roots…. I use that sometimes.
Since menopause, my hair is less abundant, especially at the temples and crown. So, shorter hair looks like more on me.
I take water aerobics 3 days a week and we ride in our golf car a lot, so with these factors a short haircut, for me, is now the way to go.

Uptown Girl, I went here to see about Duri Rejuvacote, and there are many different varieties. Amazon.com: duri nail rejuvacote (http://tinyurl.com/kyp5dpy)
Can you tell me what to use?
Thanks!
Sure- Amazon's website made it look confusing!
Rejuvacote is one bottle- one singular product. One step.
It is a clear product when applied, but the bottles look a little pinker from photo to photo on the website.
What they show (forget their wording) is multiple packs of bottles.
Try one bottle, follow the recommended application, (be sure to include the nail tip) and see how you like it once the bottle is done. Keep us posted!
(P.S. their prices are in line- and the bottle lasts a long time.)
Miracote is another product- it is a top coat to be used to seal nail polish and give it a glossy finish. Very good for glossing up the polish between manicures, but has no reparative effect on the nails.
Rejuvacote flew off my shelves at the salon.
Oh yes, remember to use a non- acetone ONLY polish remover, then wash that off with gentle soap.
:)

I just realized that you posted a picture showing your haircut.
It looks great on you, but it wouldn't work for me as I always hide behind long bangs.
I love your eyebrows, they are so natural looking.
If you don't mind sharing ... If your hair is mostly silver, how do you keep your eyebrows dark?
Uptown Girl
11-27-2014, 05:32 AM
If your hair is abundant enough at the bang area, you can do this same haircut and keep long bangs- have your stylist section off the bangs (in a triangle from almost your crown) and leave them alone… do the rest of the cut, then lightly integrate the bangs in at the end, when the hair is almost dry… leaving them at the length that is comfortable for you.
The front will look like Kaley Cuoco's recent pixie cut.
My brows (thanks, by the way) are showing a little silver here and there and are thinning a bit along with my hair.
I fill them in lightly with an artist's colored pencil (a medium grey) using short, vertical strokes, just as if I were drawing them on paper.
I remove any wayward strokes with a damp Q tip.
here's a tip- if you have a regular (graphite) pencil that has softer graphite, softer than a #2, it makes a perfect eyebrow pencil that works with almost any color brow. Just dull the tip a bit, so it is not sharp and use tiny vertical strokes.
I have also used an angled makeup brush (wet it) and matte eye shadow in the same way. It stays in place until you cleanse or wet your face.
That takes a bit more practice than using a pencil- and you'll want your shadow pan to dry completely before putting it away.
They have some great brush on products (like Dermabrow) online, but they are pricey ($30 + shipping)- so I experimented with what I had on hand and it worked for me.

I use matte eye shadow now. Or when I'm lazy, I wear a baseball hat, cover my eyebrows with my bangs and hope the wind doesn't blow. :)
What is your opinion on having eyebrows tattooed? I've seen some that are horrendous, and others using short strokes that look somewhat natural (after the first few weeks).

I'm not sure how this hair cut would work in a golf cart.
But it sure would make the "growing out grey" process simpler.
Of course it looks great on her because she is young and has good bone structure.

In my opinion, you've got to consider the long term effects. Face muscles change with age. Your brow line will too. Tattoos change with age, pigment colors change over time with exposure to sunlight (and perhaps even ph in the skin)
There is an old thread on this topic somewhere- where I talked about an otherwise beautiful woman I met at a party who owned a 'permanent brow' salon. Her brows were tattooed. She thought they looked fabulous. They truly unnerved everyone else.

OH YEAH, that haircut cut (in total) would look pretty trashed after a golf cart ride.
Just mentioned it as an example of a pixie with long bangs in front. REALLY long bangs. That is a razor cut, by the way.
AND you are right, the ideal haircut is balanced to one's bone structure- or, as in my case, lack of bone structure.
If I have to be reincarnated again, I'm picking out high cheekbones, an exquisite jawline and full brows next time. :jester:

I'm so with you there, Bare. I'm looking for one, also biweekly, that is reasonably priced, will show up when they say they will, and actually clean ALL the things in my house, like dust picture frames, wipe down cabinets in the kitchen, clean the shower, empty the trash cans in the bathroom, dust my bedframe, vacuum the ONE rug in my house. Am I asking too much? I have 2 dog beds in my bedroom. One woman thought it would be ok to take the dog bed and put it on TOP of my own human bed and bedspread while she mopped my bedroom floor. I didn't agree with that idea. Frankly, I couldn't see how she thought that dirty thing seemed like it would belong on my clean bed. Am I too picky? When I lived in PA we had the same woman clean for 11 years and never a complaint. Since we have been here we have had 3 different people come and not come back with no explanation. And charge us 25% more than we were paying in PA and do less for the money. I just don't get it. Someone please explain it to me. I don't think I'm cranky or unkind or unreasonable but I do have a standard in my head of what a cleaning person should do (show up is one of thing).
I have a 1550 sq ft villa. It's all tile. What do people pay?

It's interesting that old Renee is now at Cals at Brownwood. I guess it's a lot closer to home for her.
I am growing out the gray in my hair and it looks like total crap. CFrance, you've only seen me at the dog park wearing a baseball hat!
The only reason I stopped coloring it is because I've developed an allergy to hair color. I'm still having it highlighted though.
I definitely do not have thick hair. (I use Big Fat Hair, maybe it works). I usually wear a baseball hat to hide the mess.
I love downstairs Whitney. Unfortunately when I need a hair cut, I need it that day. Whitney is getting popular.
And of course it's High Season, so now I have to wait a few weeks to see her. Of course, any good hair dresser has a waiting list.
Unfortunately I'm not disciplined enough to make another appointment each time I get a hair cut.
Sometimes a hair cut lasts me four weeks, sometimes eight weeks. I occasionally chop away at it myself.
So when I need an immediate appointment, I usually get a Salon newbie, who hasn't yet built up a following.
New Renee at Victoria Hair does have 15 years experience. I don't know where she worked previously.
I was hoping someone could tell me they've used new Renee and she does a crackerjack job.

Are you massaging hand cream into your nails every few hours, or after washing your hands?
I thought my nails were permanently horrible, weak and destined to split.
I always used nail hardener until I read online that is the worst thing you can do for weak nails.
I started using hand cream regularly. It turns out my nails were starving for moisture.
Now my nails are strong and healthy - it's like magic happened. Try it, you may be amazed.
But you have to remember to ALWAYS use a good hand lotion.

I am putting this question here in the Girl Talk thread because I know I will get an answer and nobody will judge me for baking chocolate chip cookies.
A long time ago, I heard something about putting a slice of bread in with the cookies when they are stored in a tight container. I think that is supposed to make the cookies crispier. Makes sense I guess. . .
Or does it?
Seems like the bread would act as sort of a dehumidifier. So crispy cookies would result. But bread dries out if you leave it out. . .so would the bread give off moisture and make the cookies chewier? Well, I guess the bread would not really be out if sealed in the container with the cookies. So I guess the answer is, for sure, crispy cookies. Or is it?
What to do? What to do?
Should I just eat all the cookies straight out of the oven so I don't have to worry about them?

Of course you should eat all the cookies out of the oven.
But make sure you eat them standing up, calories don't count if you're standing up!

Forget the bread. I can't imagine who said that!
I hate soft chocolate chip cookies and only like them crisp. What I do is after I have my fill, I store them in a container. When I'm ready to eat more, I simply put them in my toaster oven. I put the heat to 250-300 degrees and put the cookies in when I turn on the oven. When the bell rings that it reached the set temp, I take them out, let them cool and eat them.
Viola -- nice and crisp once again!

I don't know about the bread in the cookie jar keeping the cookies fresh.
That does remind me of another tip regarding bread. If you put a fresh slice of loaf bread in with your brown sugar, the brown sugar will stay soft and not become hard and lumpy. I didn't think this would work, but it did. The slice of bread will become hard as a rock and will need to be changed. But if you keep a slice of bread in the canister, the sugar will stay nice and fresh.
Weird, huh? But it works!!

Slices of apple will also work, but the easiest way is to wet a paper towel or napkin, but not dripping; squeeze the water out.
Place it on a small piece of foil on top the the brown sugar, so the paper towel/napkin isn't touching the sugar.
Bingo!
Your sugar should be soft within about 24 hours or so.

It doesn't matter what kind of shampoo and conditioner I use, very expensive or very cheap, my hair turns out the same.
I fall for all the promises of volume and damage repair but my hair never improves.
So now I use Suave Rosemary + Mint because I love the way my hair smells.
I have to pretty much agree with you, Bare. Now, however, I only use a shampoo that doesn't have sodium laureth sulfate, which does dry your hair. The price on that type of shampoo has come down significantly.
After washing my hair, I use one of the conditioners that to me, seems pretty much like the old fashioned cream rinse (remember those???). Every so often I will use one of the thicker conditioners and leave it on for a while before rinsing it out.

For a long time, I have been using Sebastian shampoo and conditioner. I think it is a division of Wella. I don't use a lot of conditioner though because it weighs heavy on my hair and flattens it. I have to be careful with mousse for the same reason. If anything, my hair is naturally way too soft.
Recently though, I found out about a mousse by a company called Agadir. It says Argan Oil on the can, underneath the name. I have no idea what argan oil is. And the word oil, on that can, worked in a counterintuitive way, for me. I would think oil would weigh my hair down.
But I am so glad I tried this mousse. In fact, I liked it so much that I ordered the Agadir shampoo and conditioner and hairspray on Amazon. It has arrived and I just used it and I think my hair has a bit more bounce.
I have used the shampoo and conditioner only once so far. I learned that a little goes a long way. But I think I am going to like this stuff with argan oil. Even if I do not know what it is. Will see.

I'm a big fan of trying new things. My hair is also soft and needs more bounce.
Laurie, do you know where can I buy Agadir shampoo and conditioner, other than Amazon?
My friend just returned from a trip and brought me some real, honest to goodness, Argan Oil from the depths of Morocco.
It is fabulous for my nails - I haven't tried it yet for facials or on my hair.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, never mind, I just googled it and found it at Walgreens. I'll definitely try it.

We have been watching it on Netflix and love it! The script is bang on and very current. I love Frankie and really feel for Sam Waterson. I think he is doing an amazing job, especially when I think of his being on Law and Order for so long. What a switch! I haven't finished the first season and don't know if it is the only one out. Now we are waiting for So You Think You Can Dance to start for our summer watching. Enjoy the summer on the lake Bare!

I'm a little too private to talk about girlie things on the general Forum.
Like Juvaderm, muffin tops, sex positions for wrinklies, and waxing bikini lines (haha, like I'd ever wear a bikini again).
I'm kidding about the sex positions, we haven't gotten to those yet.
Some things are best kept private ... although a few guys have wandered in here over the years  and hustled right back out.

However I did read that Demi Moore had plastic surgery on her knees.
Probably a last-ditch attempt to keep her younger husband, poor girl.

About the gracefull way to grow into grey....it is the pits....I know it is what I need to do, but Yowee....it takes a brave soul!
My hairdresser at home was so fabulous!! I truly received compliments daily, often from strangers, even from men while my hubby stood beside me. So I know they were sincere compliments.
Here, I gave up finding a good colorist for red hair after 6 months. So frustrating.....
So here I am, chopping it off and waiting and watching. Hubby is complimenting me on my hair. But I think he is full of it! And happy to not see the large Salon bills.
If I hate it, I will color it again. But red hair and Florida do not mix. Especially is the red actually left some 10 years ago. But I watch "Mystries of Laura" and Debra Messing's fabulous hair color is to die for!! I will miss it.....

I have a girl friend who was born a natural strawberry blonde, drop dead gorgeous, and over the years she gradually went into a deep auburn color. BUT, she has an incredible Russian hair dresser and she is very wealthy so I imagine she spends a fortune on that hair, but it is still a head turner, even at her age.

Going gray definitely wasn't on my bucket list! I would keep coloring my hair if it were possible.
But I developed allergies to hair coloring, even special "non allergenic" ones the Salon ordered for me.
It's apparently difficult to grow out "salt and pepper hair" versus hair that has gone completely gray.
It seems to require an expensive combination of frequent low lights and highlights. Sigh.
