Freeda,
Thank you for that great explanation. I was hoping you would post again as you seem to have great knowledge on this subject. Some of the benefits besides weight loss that are supposed to happen seem to really be happening! I'm not having blood sugar spikes or cravings for any foods. I don't get gittery from suddenly feeling famished. I enjoy everything that I am eating, yet am having no trouble at all stopping eating with smaller portions. I have more energy throughout the day.

If there are things I could be doing to improve what I'm eating -- less of something or more of something, I would welcome your feedback.

Hi, thanks for the good news. The reason you are having more energy is that the body is now releasing stored energy.

Some quick ideas: drink 10 glasses of water a day, best if you can drink it at or near room temperature since cold drinks especially during or after a meal can contribute to sort of 'congealing' food in our tract.

Also, get moderate exercise several times a week - ideally 30-45 minutes brisk walk 4-5 times a week.

A great morning routine (learned this from Japanese practices - and they as a population group have one of the longest lifespans), which promotes cleansing, is to drink a full glass of water first thing when you get up, (then, ideally next brush your teeth so that your mouth feels fresh, and you will be less inclined to want to eat immediately); wait about 45 minutes, then have your breakfast/coffee/tea etc.

Best sources of protein: nuts, avocadoes, olives, beans, soy, and legumes.
Second best sources of protein: cold-water fish like salmon, mackeral, trout, sardines, and tuna.
Third best sources of protein: fowl. For bacon or burgers, turkey is the best choice.
Poorest sources of protein: red meat, dairy. (Doesn't mean you 'can't' have red meat, but limit it and choose the leanest meat available; the best choices are wild game, buffalo/bison, grass-fed cattle, organically raised cattle).

Healthy fats: the goal should be to consume more omega-3 essential fatty acids (from cold-water fish - listed above in the protein list, flaxseed, flaxseed oil, hemp seeds, soybean oil, walnuts, raw almonds, range fed chicken eggs, and high quality fish oil);
and consume more monounsaturated fats (the best is oleic acid, found in olives, extra virgin olive oil, almonds, peanuts, pistachio, pecan, canola oil, avocado, hazelnut, cashew, and macadamia nuts),
and consume less saturated fats (ie, mainly from meat and dairy, and also in coconut and palm oils).

[We also need some omega-6 essential fatty acids - found in meat, chicken, corn oil, processed foods, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, dairy, safflower oil - but these are in such abundance in the modern diet that we are all likely to be getting plenty of these without having to work at it. Ideally, in order to promote a normal inflammatory response - which lessens allergies, arthritis, heart disease, bloating, etc, plus causes many other good things to happen - in the body, omega-6's should be in close ratio with our consumption of omega-3's. But with the typical Western diet most people are greatly overconsuming omega-6's and underconsuming omega-3's, so they are out of balance, promoting inflammation in the body].

And avoid trans fats (labels like 'hydrogenated, or 'partially hydrogenated' .

Low-glycemic carbohydrate eating will go along way to promote all of the above ideas, since there will gradually be less cravings for the high-glycemic carbs that often accompany poorer protein and fat choices; thus, it is easier to accomplish other changes, and to eat less just because of a natural change in your appetite. Again, it is not necessary to be 'perfect' in all of these choices in order to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight or other health improvements; but the rate, and consistency long-term, of weight loss, feeling good, and other health improvements is a direct correlative of how consistently healthfully we eat.

The body is an obedient and marvelous 'machine' that responds exactly as it is 'supposed' to based on how we fuel it. Sharply spiking your blood sugar with just one snack or meal can cause cravings that can last for hours, or even days, for more high-glycemic foods, which, if consumed, will set off an additional cycle of cravings; this becomes an endless cycle. This is unnecessary misery that we can learn to avoid bringing on ourselves.

So, it is important to always eat something when hungry, since that is a natural message from the body - that is, when it is not coming from a blood-sugar crash which was caused by a blood sugar spike; just eat something that is not moderately- or high-glycemic.

I have lost 4 pounds since the day before yesterday......but, btw, I had food poisoning from a restaurant quiche. I lived in Ice-Chip City for a while.

Seriously, congratulations, Pt. That is such a reasonable and healthy way to do it. Balanced.

Those blood sugar drops you talked about are wicked. I get mean if I go too long w/o food. Mean is not my style. I have a friend who gets those drops, too. We were on our way to a nice dinner out one evening when I diverted to an Arby's drive-thru on the way. She was sooooooo mean. All she needed was about half of an Arby's Jr. and then we could go on and have a nice leisurely dinner without her terrifying the server.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, Pt.

Boomer, I saw this story and remembered your recent bought with food poisoning.

IslandGal .. I'm looking for a relaxing tape to put me to sleep at night (hoping I can figure out how to put in my new IPAD). I think you mentioned a website where you could download a good relaxing tape. Could you please share the site again?

P.S. I made my first smoothie ... spinach/bananna/strawberry/almond milk/isolate protein! It was delicious and even Fireboy liked it. However, sadly, I think it must have contained about 2,000 calories.

Wow, Freeda,
Thanks for the wealth of helpful info. I've hit somewhat of a plateau with weight-- not losing as quickly. However, I have lost another 1 1/2-lbs, so gotta love the trend. I still feel really great and have felt NO sugar spikes since I've been doing this.

Thanks again for all your help!

Hi Bare,
Your smoothie ingredients sound yummy. I wonder what isolate protein is too? Plus, it couldn't have been 2,000 calories per serving with those ingredients, could it?

A banana is, what, about 100-110 calories? One cup of strawberries is about 50 calories. Spinach, about the same as strawberries. About 45 calories in one cup of sweetened almond milk. Lots of fiber in strawberries and bananas, but lots of potassium and sugar. That's what I have to watch. And that's two things I loveee. That drink sounds yummie.

Good job P. Keep going girlfriend. You girls are inspiring me to do something about my extra blubber.

Still I wonder about the isolate protein. I found body builder info about it but not much else.

Barefoot -- Yay! Glad you liked your smoothie. If you want to reduce calories, reduce the amount of frozen fruit and add a bit of sweetener. Stevia is healthiest -- but don't use the powdered kind as it can be bitter. Go to a health food store and get the liquid stevia. It tastes really good and there is no after taste (and no calories!).

For everyone asking about isolate protein, that is simply protein powder that you can find in any health food store, probably even at Walmart. "Isolate" means that they have taken a food source and isolated the protein from the rest of the plant.

I was kidding about the 2,000 calories! Still, with all the stuff I jammed into the blender, it wasn't a "diet" drink. But OMG, was it healthy! And delicious. (And I should know because I had three glasses full ... hmmmm ... I guess that isn't the idea). I add protein because I believe that protein keeps you from getting hungry. So I try to have a little protein with every meal.

I went to a body building store (by mistake) to buy the protein. I felt like an idiot when I walked into the store and it was full of young body builders. They all turned around and stared at the little granny walking in! I bought "Extreme Power Whey Isolate Protein". The bottles were all so large I could hardly carry one!

Isolate protein is the purest (and most expensive) kind of protein. Supposedly it acts immediately for bodybuilders to give them a power surge.

I had the smoothies on Monday and I'm still waiting for my power surge! :clap2:

I hope somebody has a helpful hint here on what to do about this.

I have new sandals and they have a problem.

I just bought them yesterday so I guess I could take them back, but I don't want to. They are sandals. Going out among back-to-school shoppers in Ohio in almost-September to look for sandals was something I figured would be a lost cause. But I had to try.

And there they were. First stop. I was surprised. Clarks sandals. Sensible. Comfortable. And best of all, the foot-bed (or whatever you call that part where your foot stands) is black just like the rest of the sandal. I will not buy sandals where that part is white because, no matter what, I get that part dirty. I step in and out of my shoes a lot during the day I guess.

Clarks are not what they used to be. That wonderful old brand from England now comes from China mostly. These did. But I felt lucky to find sandals this time of year, especially considering that I wear a 7M along with everybody else. And, besides, they were on sale.

So this morning I put them on to walk around the house to start breaking them in. I looked so fetching in my white socks and my pajamas and my new sandals.

But then......aaaaauuuuuugh!!!!....

squeak squeak squeak squeak Squeakity Squeakity SQUEAK!

Is there anything that can fix this? I do not want to have to start over. I hate to shop for shoes. But I do not want to be constantly announcing my presence by squeaking along. I feel certain that if these shoes were the proper English Clarks, like they used to make, there would be no squeaking permitted. (sigh)

I hope somebody can help. (I have thought of trying WD 40.)

Have you ever heard the old expression that if your shoes squeak, you're coming into money? Maybe that may find the squeak more tolerable! <grin>

That was my first thought (using WD40) even before I finished your thread where you too mentioned maybe trying WD40. Why not give it a try? Can't hurt and will probably remove the squeak by lubricating the shoe materials. Yepper, that will do it fer shure.....b

Hi Boomer!

I had some squeaky sandals, too. I was frustrated, too. I bought some inexpensive pairs at Kohl's last year, and I vowed I would never do that again. I guess the squeaks aren't only in cheaper shoes if your Clarks are doing it too!

Anyway, I read somewhere that if you poke a pin hole in the bottom (mine squeaked when the heel was stepped on), it would help to let the air out. Sounded pretty reasonable to me. Not so! It did not work! I poked an even bigger hole, and it still didn't work!

My advice would be to take them back while you can, and save yourself any future frustration.

Good luck!

Does the shoe liner come out? That could be where the squeak is coming from. I have a pair of shoes that squeak, but only when I put a particular shoe insert in. Drives me nuts. I need the insert for a heel problem and without it in, those athletic shoes are uncomfortable. If your foot liners are removable, try walking in the shoes without them and see if they squeak. If they don't, I'd return the shoes.

How sad, you've found what sounds like a really good shoe, fashion and bargin wise. Too bad they announce your arrival before you do... ;)

Thanks, girls, for all the suggestions.

I know it's not my joints, GG. Isn't that what WD-40 is really for? (Well, actually sometimes I like to dab a little WD-40 behind my ears. I think that stuff smells wonderful. On really special occasions, I have been known to dab a little Grand Marnier behind my ears. I think the smell of Grand Marnier is too wonderful to try to describe.) But I digress, back to my sandals....

Tonight I decided to try my sandals again. So I put them on and got busy on some house stuff, including cleaning out the refrigerator which is what I almost always do on Garbage Eve. Wednesday is Garbage Eve. Annie always looks on with hope in her heart. Annie got the last few ounces of turkey breast and a couple of little carrots.

I needed to get rid of an ear of corn and two skinny slices of watermelon so I walked down the hall and delivered those to Mr. Boomer. He was in his office, still reading that book about that girl who's got a dragon tattoo and plays with fire and kicks hornets' nests.

I returned to the kitchen and bustled about some more.

Well, I was so heavily involved in all my domesticity and leftovers-pushing that I did not notice right away that my new shoes had stopped squeaking! :MOJE_whot:

I don't know how it happened. Maybe it was that the sole needed to be compressed. Maybe it was all the good vibes from the Girl Talk thread. Whatever it was, I am happy that they are working out fine now. And they are getting more and more comfortable as the leather stretches out a little.. The fit is perfect.

I bought these shoes at the mall, but I found a picture of them on Zappos just now so you could see them if you want to.....

Hi SSmith,

I ended up losing 7 lbs by Aug. 21 for my high school reunion. Perhaps my goal of 10 lbs in three weeks was overly ambitious. I did not want to do it via "starvation" or anything that I would not be able to continue as a lifestyle change.

Yes, I an continuing with the low GI approach. As of today, my total weight loss since I started is 7.5 lbs. The weight is coming off much more slowly, but it's still trending downward, and I feel terrific! I need to incorporate more exercise-- no doubt. I have been soooo busy in the last few weeks-- in part, planning the reunion. But it's not a good excuse. :sigh:

Medical time ... dingalingaling ... I'd like to talk about knees. I need some opinions based on your experience or that of someone you know.

I've had "bad knees" for years and it serves me right. I used to play squash every day, jog, ski, and wear three-inch heels all the time. (No, my sneakers didn't have three-inch heels, silly goose). That was before I realized that I wouldn't be young and bouncy forever. Way back then.

Anyway, now my family doctor says I need arthroscopic surgery, that I have bits of stuff floating around in my kneecaps causing me pain. She has referred me to a surgeon. (I had arthroscopic surgery 20 years ago and it improved my knees at that time. But of course I was warned against skiing, jogging and playing squash!)

An arthritis specialist has told me I should have cortisone shots in both knees! And he thinks that there would be a significant improvement so that I could avoid surgery. He says the floating bits aren't that significant.

I'm scheduled for the cortisone shots in four days. Anyone out there with knee problems?

Long-term, I hope the shots work!

Thanks girls. I've been researching cortisone shots on the internet and reading "reviews" from people who've had them. The comments are very mixed, from "it's a miracle" to "don't do it, constant pain". Yikes! Oh well, I think I'll give it a try on Friday.

I also started taking Fosomax this week for the first time. I think that makes me officially an old fart. :girlneener:

Bare, If taking fosomax makes you an old fart, then I have been one for about 15 years now!

When my doc told me I had to start taking fosomax I said " But I feel great" !!!!

his reply was " Good and we want to keep it that way!

Personally I have had very little improvement in bone strength from taking foxomax but at least it didnt go the other way. My bone density improved greatly when I was told to combine calcium plus D to my daily drug routine.

I have been away and only had time to take quick glimpses at TOTV until this week. I missed Bare's post about her knees and cortisone shots.

I hope you are doing great Bare. I also wish I had seen your post eariler. My husband just had surgery on his knee for a torn miniscus. It turns out old scar tissue inside his knee was causing more pain than the torn miniscus.

He could have written your post. He didn't know what to do but opted first for the cortison shot. It was like a miracle...for about one day (that's when the numbing agent in the injection fades) and then the pain was back.

He decided to have the surgery and actually played his first round of golf in TV about two weeks later. The surgery went great and he was on crutches, at his discretion, for about a week. He could have gotten off the crutches sooner but he used them for preferential treatment at the airport.

Let us know how you are doing Bare.

Thanks P. It is scary when you have to have surgery or even consider surgery on your knees. He'd never had any kind of surgery or major illness, thank God. I think I know how Bare must feel. The cortisone does great for many people though.

My husband's surgeon said it was the scar tissue causing the majority of the pain and the cortisone doesn't work as well for that pain. It's been a crazy couple of months to say the least.

And now, we are getting ready to move from NC to Pennsylvania!!! Too far to just drive down for a long weekend at the house in TV.

I'm going to miss my husband this winter. I'm glad his knee is doing better so he can take care of himself while I'm in Florida.

Well, here I am, still alive and smiling. I had cortisone shots in both knees five days ago. (Otherwise I would have had to have arthoscopic surgery on both knees to remove some floaty bits). I was instructed to stay off my feet for 48 hours after the shots. Which was impossible because I have a house for sale (in Canada). But that is another story!

As I mentioned, my knees have been very stiff and ouchy for the past year. I even bought a cane at one point, my right knee was so bad. After the cortisone shots, I had a lot of knee pain from the injections themselves. It lasted for about eight hours, and then the pain from the injections stopped, just like magic. I haven't had any pain since. My knees are still stiff, but they feel waaay better and the doctor says that will improve.

The doctor (a specialist in arthritis) said that I will have the best results six weeks after the shots. And that hopefully I would be pain free for some time .. perhaps six months to a year, perhaps longer.

So .. right now .. the jury is out. But I'm glad I had the shots!

I'm in Canada now and have a house to sell and have to get moved to Lagoon City, Ontario, before I leave for The Villages (at the end of October).

Hopefully the next time I see you, I'll be dancing at Katie Belles. :pepper2:

Yes, I'm in the Toronto area now. But I'm just not a city person.

Fireboy isn't retiring for another year or two (from his job in downtown Toronto). But he gets tons of time off to visit me in The Villages or wherever I am. As a Canadian, I am only allowed to spent six months in The Villages. So I needed to figure out a fun place to spend the summers. We do have a lake cottage "up north". But it is very isolated with lots of bears, so I don't want to spend my whole summer there.

So I decided to get on with my plans, as my golden years are flying by way, way too quickly. I decided to abandon the city and, for the summers, move to a little resort community called Lagoon City, Ontario. It's a cool place; every home owner there has a boat at their doorstep.
I'm hoping that the move to Lagoon City will make the six months I'm in exile less painful!:cryin2: You Yanks don't know how lucky you are!

Well, I must be feeling pretty desperate to parade my big marital secret right out here in the open, on the internet.
:22yikes:

But it is the Girl Talk thread after all so at least I know that my secret will be ever so safe.

Yes. I guess I am desperate, desperate for any ideas that might help or at least a little commiseration.

I have just emerged from our basement, and I am dusty and grouchy. (Yeah. I know I wanted a ranch this time and not a two-story, but a ranch with a full basement makes for one honkin' basement. I try to never go down there, but sometimes I just have to. And today was the day.)

Mr. Boomer is a great guy and our marriage is a happy one, until.............I go down into the basement....when I go down into the basement with a goal in mind and I sweetly say.....

"WE GOTTA GET RIDA ALL THIS %#&*!!"

Well, we worked rather pleasantly together for a while -- on opposite sides of the basement -- so I guess that is not really together. I, of course, was getting rid of all sorts of things that he did not care about, like old Christmas decorations and a cappuccino maker.

But then I decided that I needed to cross the line.....the line into the war zone, where I decided it was time for me to Ready! Aim! Fire! at those vinyl records and tapes and CD's. He's got an iPod for goodness sake. That stuff is loaded on the iPod. Led Zeppelin and who knows Who and all that other groovy stuff.

He says he needs it for backup.

I gently reminded him about iTunes.

He said it's not the same, already bought this stuff, might need to download it again.

I reminded him that he had not missed the spear gun I talked him into getting rid of last time.

But I was getting nowhere I could tell and THEN I called him a digital hoarder and I stomped upstairs. (But ya know, now that I think about it, that was probably what he had planned for me all along.)

Boomer, that episode sounds surprisingly like the garage clean-up that Fireboy and I embarked on a few days ago (on which Fireboy and I embarked, it is punctuation week after all).

There was some stomping and name calling and even contemplating hitting each other with soft objects. How many shovels does one family need .. would ten be too many .. yes! But apparently they have different functions and every family needs a light one and a heavy one and a flat one and a pointed one, one for leaves, one for snow, one for ice, etc., etc.

And now on a different topic, PTurner .. are you still losing weight?

LisaJ, I don't have any advise, just sympathy for you after reading about your ailments. It sounds very painful.

Have you done things that caused lots of impact on your feet, like areobics, running or perhaps from a job?

After reading about plantar fasciitis and post tibial tendonitis, it sounds like the ptt was caused by the plantar fasciitis...maybe how you've favored that leg when you tried to walk.

I hope someone can help with a suggestion to ease the pain.

Hi B-
Yes, it is from my job. I am a realtor (from Naples), and was on my feet alot. I took 4 months off this summer hoping that would help. It didn't. I had Plantar Fasciitis from dancing so much in the wrong shoes and I was in soooo much pain and I didn't want to have any surgeries because I've heard horror stories about them. I went to All About Feet on 466 near Bargains & Treasures and that man was a miracle maker. He sold me some orthothic (sp?) innersoles for my existing shoes and also sold me a set of "MIRACLE" shoes that instantly cured and stopped my pain. That was about 6 months ago and I haven't had a problem since. The shoes were about $70 and I use them all day long in the house but don't wear them dancing as they are slipons and I can only dance in closed shoes, but my shoes with the innersoles have been working great. If you want more about this store, I will look for his card for you. I call him the Miracle Worker as I was in so much pain. Good Luck!!

I had plantar faschiitis about 4 years ago for probably over a year. Extremely painful, and not only when you are walking, as you know if you've ever had it. Sometimes you're just sitting on the couch when pain shoots thru your heel/foot/leg.

Family doctor referred me to a podiatrist. I also had a heel spur, which I think is common. Took naproxen twice a day for about 2 mos (no longer took it ONLY when I had a flare-up) and also got a cortisone shot in the heel. Can't remember which order I did that in.

Podiatrist recommended orthotics but I didn't get them since I love wearing sandals and didn't like the looks of them in sandals. Maybe the specialty shoe store can do a better job there.

If the PF had persisted I would have tried them (orthotics). I think I also would have tried acupuncture and reflexology, but didn't need to in my case (so far).

Threw out all shoes except ones that have very good arch support - Merrell's are my favorite. Hardly ever wear heels. Liked the way Born felt but have had 2 soles crack and they only have a 1 year warranty and shoe repair can't repair their soles. Thanks for the shoe store recommendation, Kathie - will stop in when I get to TV in November.

Hi LisaJ,
The only thing that helped my PF was orthotics. But be warned. Most of the brands sold in supermarkets and drugstores, including Dr. Scholls, make the PF worse! To relieve PF, orthotics must be rock hard and have arch support. Spenco is the only store-bought brand I've seen that works. Sounds like KathieI found another one at the All About Feet store she mentioned. (Can't wait to check it out when I'm there!) I have a custom pair ordered and fitted by my orthopedic doctor. They work great, but it does limit the type of shoes I can wear. If I wear sandals for any extended time (sans orthotics), I pay dearly.

Best of luck to you. I hope you find relief soon!

Maybe there are no trick-or-treaters in TV. But I am in Ohio.

Why oh why oh why oh….

Why has nobody designed a little Halloween vault with a big lock with a timer? – a timed lock that can be set to open the little vault just a few minutes before the first trick-or-treater is due. And not before – no matter what.

Kit Kats! And Reese’s! And Twix! Oh My!

I tried to buy Skittles. I hate Skittles. I do not understand why anybody likes Skittles. But kids like Skittles. And I do not. And so for years I bought Skittles…….

BUT NOW I cannot find Skittles anywhere.

I could not keep my fool-proof plan to myself. Ohhhh, nooooo, I had to blab my plan --my plan to avoid EATING ALL THE HALLOWEEN CANDY before the first little superhero shows up at the door to rescue me.

Maybe you have heard that old saying, “No good deed goes unpunished.” I have never liked that saying, but I guess old sayings get to be old sayings because sometimes they come true.

Yep. I thought I was doing one of those good deeds when year after year, I revealed my Skittles plan to other women. And I bet they told even more women. AND NOW, they are all out there beating me to the Skittles. By the time I get around to buying the Halloween candy, only the good stuff is left.

I guess if I were an entrepreneur, I would either invent that Halloween vault with the timed lock or buy up a bunch of Skittles next summer and scalp them when it gets close to Halloween.

Chocoholic Boomer

PS: Yeah. Yeah. I know. I know. You might be asking why I do not just ask Mr. Boomer to hide the candy from me. I have tried that. It does not work.

My daughter also has foot pain, both feet. If your feet hurt everything hurts! A great sandal that I know can be bought at Macy's is the Fitflop. Not cheap but very worth the price. I also have a pair of Skechers tone up flip flops which I practically live in. Both brands have great arch support, not sure if they help plantar f..... I had always been one to take shoes off when I came in the door. Not a good idea when the floor is made of hard tile so now I keep my flipflops on even when inside.

My podiatrist recommended Naot brand shoes for my plantar faciatis. They are made in Israel and are available at the shoe store in Spanish Springs. They have great insoles, or you can remove them, and put your own insoles in.

Naots come in clogs and dressy sandals. I swear by them and wear them a lot. I love to go barefoot, which I shouldn't do. But as soon as I feel any foot discomfort, I start wearing my Naots all the time and my feet feel great again.

P.S.
Boomer, I SO understand your Halloween strategy of buying candy you don't like. I did that for years. Of course I had more will power then. Now I buy what I like, but hide it from myself in the garage. In the hope that during the trip to the garage, the craving will go away. But sadly, it never does.

That's the store. I have a couple of pairs of shoes from there, Finn Comfort shoes....one pair of sandals, another pair of athletic shoes. They have a great fit and arch support for anyone with plantar problems. The insole is removable and replaceable. Only problem is the shoes are mucho expensive. I also have an orthotic from them that I wear in my other shoes.

I've also bought shoes from All About Feet. There I got relief from another foot difficulty I was experiencing at the time.

When your feet hurt, it's difficult to do anything. Good luck is getting the situation taken care of.

So on Wednesday morning, I went in and told them that I could not do the job at this time. It wouldn't be fair to them or all of the wonderful customers that come to visit (to be stuck with me). They were wonderful and understanding however, I was so sad. Hopefully, I can get healthy and have another opportunity at a later date.

Not sure if this will help, but I have arthritis in both my feet which at times has been disabling. I use Voltaren Gel which I apply to my feet and it seems to provide a lot of relief very quickly. Not sure if this will help, but I have arthritis in both my feet which at times has been disabling. I use Voltaren Gel which I apply to my feet and it seems to provide a lot of relief very quickly. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). You might ask your doctor about it. I like the idea that it is topical so it doesn't get into my blood stream. If you have any questions about it you can PM me.

Is it prescription or over-the-counter? I wonder if it works on knees?

I recently met a 94 year-old lady who line dances and plays mahjong for money. She should live in TV but lives in N. Miami. Anyway, her mind and body are still healthy. She is chronologically ageful, but young in my book!

Hey, I just coined a word.

Yes it does.
It's prescription. Here is the website: http://www.voltarengel.com/consumer/default.aspx

In the interest of being perfectly honest I should probably mention that I work for the company that makes it, but I do use it and probably would never have heard of it otherwise.

It's a shame there are so few "Real Men" left that women have to turn to wine for a support system!
Men should be ashamed they've become so self-absorbed they don't know what being a "gentleman" really means!

A Real Man.............

A real man is a woman's best friend.
He will never stand her up and never let her down.
He will reassure her when she feels insecure and comfort her after a bad day.
He will inspire her to do things she never thought she could do...
To live without fear and forget regret.
He will enable her to express her deepest emotions and give in to her most intimate desires.
He will make sure she always feels as though she's the most beautiful woman in the room and enable her to be the most
confident, sexy, seductive and invincible.

No..wait......sorry.......I'm thinking of wine.:wine:
It's wine that does all that.........
Never mind !!!!

I was reading the thread that someone started about botox. And how botox injections could possibly be causing muscle atrophy in other parts of the body. I really doubt it, because botox has been around a long time. But .. I used to think that cigarette smoking wouldn't hurt you!

I had a friend that had liposuction, a gal in her 40s. She died on the way home from the hospital from a blood clot. Any surgical procedure has some kind of risk.

And I was musing about beauty treatments and the price that women are willing to pay for youth enhancements. It is really hard to deal with flab and wrinkles and know that you're not just having a bad day, that looking like your grandmother is a way of life! I know we should all be grateful that we're alive and reasonably healthy. And not agonize about the bags and sags.

Anyway, I started thinking about "quick and easy" facelifts .. I'm not sure of the correct name. You walk into the doctor's office and without surgery, you walk out an hour later looking like a teenager. Someone told me the other day that with the "quick and easy" facelifts, they run a thread through your face and it has barbs on it to pull the skin tight. And now some people are having the barbs come through the skin on their face. Yikes!!

There is absolutely no point to this post. (Unless you know of a skin cream that makes your skin look like a baby's bum! ... please post the name here).

Oh Barefoot, I know.

I once looked into having my eyelids done. I figured if I found the right surgeon, at least I would not end up with that look of perpetual surprise. But then I chickened out anyway. The idea of elective surgery, especially near my eyes, was something that I managed to talk myself out of.

I have wondered about brow lifts, too. Maybe I could get the same effect though by using duct tape under my bangs. Do they make duct tape in skin tones? If they do not, perhaps they should.

I have found that the best way to make my skin look wonderful and young is to look in the mirror while not wearing my contact lenses or my glasses.

And if you lie down on your back and look in a hand-mirror, the sagging goes away. You can take yourself right back to the 1970's, no problem and it costs nothing.

One thing that I seriously do believe in though for skin is the use of sunscreen. My daily moisturizer and makeup have sunscreen. But that is not exactly a news bulletin. We all know about sunscreen.

I had a couple of terrible burns though and that made me stop.

Although, then I took up slathering on that stuff -- what was it called??? I think it was Q-T. (I think somewhere in this thread -- where we have all been talking for nearly 3 years -- we did our Q-T confessions once before.)

I remember going to an amusement park on a date when I was 16. I had used that evil stuff the day before so I could be sure to appear so glamorous. I looked like I had rusted and I had not rusted evenly either. With that and my Cleopatra eyeliner and my teased hair, I was such a vision of loveliness.

Hi Ladies-
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this however, I'm hoping some of you will have the answer. I have been struggling with Plantar Fasciitis for 2 years only to find out I have post tibial tendonitis as well. Have any of you had this? Do you have any advice on shoes, orthothics? Any help is greatly appreciated. If you think I should post this under general topics, please let me know. I am soooo miserable and want to get out and do things!!

Hi LisaJ,

I know your post, that I am quoting here, is from several weeks ago, but I thought of it today when the topic of plantar fascitis came up. I had just heard that a friend of mine is having a real battle with plantar fascitis, and so today when I was having a massage, I asked my massage therapist if her training included treating plantar fascitis.

She said yes and said that sometimes the pain is sharp stabs accompanied by burning, and that it is possible that the plantar nerve is entrapped. Then she talked about something called the abductor hallucis (I think) and some other things with scientific names. And I think she said the massage used for this has something to do with the calves and maybe even the Achilles and also warming the area. (But I could not take notes because I was flat on my stomach with my face in that little hole at the table-top and it was hard to write that way so I really do not know for sure what I am trying to say, but it's a start, at least.)

I am a real believer in medical massage and although I have not had plantar fascitis, massage therapy has helped me with other things.

If you have not already tried medical massage, you might want to make some calls to see if you can find a massage therapist who can treat this. Your best bet might be to check with a chiropractor's office that has massage therapists who work there. (I cannot recommend because I am not in TV.)

Anyway, I hope this finds you better and past this miserable thing. But, if not, maybe a series of massages can help you. I wish you the best. I have often heard it said that when your feet hurt, you hurt all over, and I know that sure can be the way it is sometimes.

Can anyone recommend a good medical massage therapist in TV? My calf muscles are very tight and have knots in them. Maybe a massage will do the trick. Thanks again, Boomer!

Have heard that Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis OTC med helps some.

My mother also had the muscle spasms in the calves of her legs and her remedy was to walk on a cold floor and it worked for her. Anything is worth a try, huh? Even the 'ol fashion remedies!

I've had massages at the old site of TV health club where the indoor pool was and was very pleased with one particular gal there who gave a great massage and sorry I don't recall her name. When I had horses, my farriers all said that their backs were wrecked because that is a tough job. But that Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM totally helped their backs and that they couldn't be blacksmiths without it.

I've tried Glucosine/Chondroitin/MSM pills and they don't help my back or knees. Nuttin, da nada. I had cortisone shots in my knees and they helped a lot for three months ... but sadly, now they've worn off .. ouch!

I need a Licensed Massage Therapist so I can claim it on my medical plan. Anyone know a great LMT?

One more suggestion.

Hubby Bill was in terrible pain from knee surgery many years ago and obviously is left with arthritis upheavals. A neighbor also suffered from similar constant pain suggested that he try her dr at Leesburg Regional Medical Hospital 600 E DIXIE AVENUE, LEESBURG, FL 34748 main telephone (352) 323 5762. Bill couldn't recall the dr's name, but he thinks he was chief anisthesiologist there and his procedure is a series of epidural injections which worked out fine for Bill and the neighbor as well. He was so pleased to become pain free after the procedure.

HA and you thought the epidural injections were just for childbirth, maybe? ;-)

If you do not get a recommendation for a massage therapist, you might try calling the chiropractors' offices in TV. I know you will find that some of them have massage therapists on staff. Ask to speak with the therapist and then you can ask the questions that apply to your particular situation. Sometimes you can find some highly-knowledgeable and experienced medical massage therapists connected with chiropractors' offices.

Lisa, I am glad your plantar fascitis is getting better. After so much time and so much pain, that is wonderful and encouraging.

And I hope things get all worked out.

Holiday thoughts

I like my favourite hair coloring salon, but they play rap music. When I asked my beautician if she could change the radio to another station, she said: "Oh, I don't even hear it", and ignored my request. I guess the solution is ear plugs.

I had a pedicure yesterday in a shop on CR 466. The man doing the pedicure coughed continually in my direction without turning his head or covering his mouth.

Probably ten years ago I wouldn't have noticed these things. As I age, I find myself becoming less tolerant, and I don't like it. However there are many choices available in The Bubble. I usually just change establishments rather than complain. I'm working on developing grace and serenity, but it's a slow process. I guess we're always a work in progress.

Exactly, Ticked off totally destroys serenity. I find myself wanting to say crabby things like: "When I was young, blah, blah, blah" ... and that is a sure sign of inflexible old age. No-one cares, nor should they.

I find deep breathing helps. People probably think I'm having some kind of allergic reaction.

It is so interesting how different people are. I happen to be one of those people who loves Christmas (maybe it is because I am a December birthday) however, I have never liked Halloween. I hated dressing up as a kid with those hot sweaty masks and itchy costumes. I always made my husband take our kids out trick or treating and stayed home and handed out the candy. (I really didn't like that job either). Then the kids would eat to much candy and get sick!!!! As an adult, I still don't like Halloween parties. Oh well, I think that is what makes all of us so unique. Can you imagine all of us going to a Halloween party if we all didn't like Halloween? Same goes for a Christmas party. I find I have a better time when I see others really enjoying themselves. To those of you who don't like Christmas, I hope you have an enjoyable time. Please tell me the same thing when Halloween rolls around.

Boomer, unfortunately we haven't abandoned gloves here completely. We had a few freezing nights lately and very cool days. The golf courses were empty for a couple of days. I wore my down-filled jacket and gloves to the dog park on those days. But I digress.

I haven't heard of gloves you wear while texting, but of course, it makes sense. Texting is an epidemic these days. Someone took a simple idea and will be a millionaire.

I have this fantasy that I'll be the one to think of the next big "must have". The ideas are all so obvious and simple. For years I wore a bathrobe backwards when I wanted to curl up with a good book and be snuggly and warm. And my husband laughed at me.

Now someone invented snugglies, and everyone has to have at least one. Bah Humbug.

Lisa, I never heard of anyone who hated Halloween! That is so interesting .. everyone is unique. As an adult, I find there is a certain freedom to Halloween. Dressing up and pretending to be someone else is kind of cool.

It is the present thing about Christmas that I don't like. People seem to spend all their time before Christmas buying gifts. And complaining about how much money they're spending. And the recipients seem to spend all their time after Christmas returning the gifts or trying to give them away. Christmas is great if you have young kids around though, they really enjoy Christmas.

And thank you Pturner and kathyzapp for the gloves-info. You found much prettier ones than I did.

I ended up at Macy's where I bought one of the last pairs of Isotoner's SmarTouch.

I still like my two pairs of soft leather unlined gloves that I have had for a hundred years, at least. One black pair and one navy blue pair. But I have nothing with a touch-screen yet.

But my old gloves that I love, well.....what can I say.....they fit me like....a glove.

I am impressed that anyone can keep (without losing) gloves (or umbrellas) for years and years. I haven't worn any (except golf gloves) here in the Villages yet, and probably never will - used them in Ohio only for walking the dog and until the car warmed up on my way to and from work.

That is not because I don't need them (is this why my hands are always dry? - I just attributed that to getting older), but because I can either never find them or have already lost them (or one of them). I tend to put them in a pocket and apparently lose one on it's way out or something. I don't wash the cloth ones (never owned them long enough to need it), so it can't be the same as the one sock syndrome :)

Speaking of the one-sock syndrome, I use safety pins to connect pairs of socks before washing. You never lose another sock and it makes sorting laundry a breeze.

Enjoy this housekeeping tip, it is the only one I know. :a040:

The commercialism of Christmas is what kills the joy of the season. Thankfully, when I and my siblings were in our 20's, we all decided as a family to stop giving each other gifts. Instead, we looked forward to spending time together and with our parents. On Christmas Eve, we had lots of finger foods, sliced turkey & ham for sandwiches, watched movies, and attended midnight Mass. Afterward, we had another party and then slept in on Christmas morn. Well, that changed when my brother had children. We gave gifts Christmas morning to the little ones and that was fun, but we stuck with the tradition of not giving gifts to each other. I think it put the spirit of love and joy into the celebration, and I believe it was one of the best decisions our family ever made.

Hi Girls, (hope I'm posting this in the right place!)
Has anyone here tried mineral foundation? You know, the powder stuff
that you "dust" onto your face, covering all flaws with a swoosh of a brush and making you look better than real?
I will probably have to change my makeup once I get to TV, and I hear this stuff 'breathes'. I'm gonna need [U]some[U]coverage, as I have some broken capillaries and other wonders here and there.
Does this stuff adhere? I imagine it blowing off in the wind, or falling into my coffee. Is it compatible with sunscreen? Does it irritate your skin? (after all, it is supposed to be ground up minerals) Will I look like a goofball? Am I gonna make a mess with it in my bathroom sink?
Any experienced advice will be gratefully accepted. Thanks!

Thanks!

Actually, I've got some and it doesn't irritate my skin. I prefer not to use it because it makes my face feel hot in the summer, but my Mom in law uses is and loves it. If I remember the literature correctly, it might act as a sunscreen on some small level.

There is a trick to using the makeup, it's brushed on and it can be really easy to get too much on. If you've ever watched Leslie Blodgett on QVC working with Bare Minerals, she tells you to use so very little you think it's not going on.....but is does. Really, it looks good when applied correctly, just as any other make-up does. The blush is great and the eye minerals are really nice, too. Get good brushes, it makes application easier.

Hi Girls, (hope I'm posting this in the right place!)
Has anyone here tried mineral foundation? You know, the powder stuff
that you "dust" onto your face, covering all flaws with a swoosh of a brush and making you look better than real?

Hi Up,

Thanks for asking this question. That's because there are times during which there is nothing better for the spirit than getting into a little bit (or a lot) of girl talk. It works even when you can't actually see the girls you are talking to. That has been proven by the longevity of this thread, started by Barefoot almost 3 years ago.

So about that makeup question.....well, hang on because I am about to digress on the topic of makeup in general. I was thinking a few days ago about asking here in Girl Talk about favorite makeups, and then I forgot about it. I am glad you brought up the topic.

We girls work really hard on our makeup, with the goal of trying to look like we are not wearing makeup.

I know we all have our makeup favorites, and we can be intensely loyal to those favorites. But way too often cosmetic companies decide to change the line. And that makes me seriously toy with the idea of becoming a hoarder of those few makeup brands that have my loyalty.

Over and over, I buy a Lancome eye pencil that Lancome calls Le Crayon Poudre. Ahhh, such a fancy-schmancy name -- a name that I am certain makes Lancome feel entitled to charge fools like me 20-some bucks for a little brown stick. I line my eyes with it and then smear the liner around and wipe most of it off. -- Can’t look like I am wearing eyeliner -- right? I make myself feel better for being had on the price of the little brown stick because it lasts about a year. And I don’t spend much on mascara. Still buying that good old Maybelline in the pink and green tube at the drugstore. Been using that one for years.

I started using a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation a few years ago. The best one I have found is from Elizabeth Arden. I bought a new tube of it yesterday. (I had reached the point you all know about -- when you get to where you have run out, but yet a glimmer of pathetic optimism makes you get the scissors and hack up the tube to get to the very last dregs.)

When I finally went to the mall to buy a new tube, the woman at the counter said the formula had been changed. (EEK! I knew I should have been hoarding that stuff. Too late now.) The new version is called Pure Finish Mineral Tinted Moisturizer. The SPF is 15. Minerals are the new part. Have not used it yet. Will see.

I usually finish things off with a little Elizabeth Arden AeroMatte ultralucent pressed powder. I cannot use loose powder. My contact lenses would hate it.

Now, here is the part of my dissertation that if it works for you, I will be your new best friend....

Before I put on the tinted moisturizer, I use a product that I learned about at a makeup counter two years ago and I still love it. Special Camouflage by Paula Dorf New York. It is in a tiny container with half yellow and half peachy-pink. The yellow tames those too-pink places you want to cover. It's the yellow part that works better to camouflage pink spots on your face than anything I have ever found.

Again, it costs a stupid amount of money. Yesterday, it cost me 23 bucks for the tiny jar, up from 20 bucks when I first discovered the stuff. It’s a really tiny jar and I only want the yellow part. But I buy it and I live in fear that Paula Dorf will stop making it. (Don’t think I have not noticed that the name Paula Dorf has a remarkable similarity to that other Paula – my arch-nemesis Paula Deen – the only woman in the world that I just KNOW Mr. Boomer would leave me for.)

But, I digress, back to Paula Dorf……

One day, my sister and I were together at the makeup counter and we were getting a little concerned because the sales rep could find only ONE of these Paula Dorf things. But she finally managed to find a second one, thank goodness. Had she not, my sister and I might have reverted to our childhood days of fighting like only sisters can. You know -- hair-pulling and scratching and pinching and biting and all that stuff of fond childhood memories. (I wonder how that would have gone over in a major department store aisle.)

Well, I certainly have managed to go on and on a bit and probably was no help at all....unless Paula Dorf works for those parts you want to cover. And if that happens, you will owe me a cyber-glass of wine sometime here in the Girl Talk thread where we will toast camouflage.

Here's a link to Paula Dorf stuff.

I love to talk about makeup because aren't we all just searching for that foundation or anti-aging cream that makes us look a dewy 25 again.

I have a feeling that Paula Dorf may get a sudden depletion of her Special Camouflage! Boomer, thanks for sharing that tip. What stores carry Paula Dorf products?

Uptown Girl, you're in exactly the right thread to natter on about makeup because guys aren't allowed to read this thread. Well, sometimes Tony drops by, to make sure we're keeping it clean! But he's the only guy that is allowed.

There is a hair salon called Root 466 in The Villages (located in Southern Trace Plaza) which is a distributor for Bare Minerals. You can stop by with a bare face and they'll do mineral makeup for you. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to. You can try before you buy.

I just bought some Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation SPF 20 to give it a try. And I quite like it. It's light, which is nice when it is hot. And instead of two steps (tinted moisturer plus powder), you can just do one step.

By the way, Barb, thanks a bunch for the info about the treadmill!

Maybelline Elizabeth Boomer

Maybelline Elizabeth Boomer... (I LOVE that!!) My new and fabulous friend! And, OH YAY!... I have been looking for yellow camouflage forever... truly I have, and this may be just what I need!
See, I'm a painter. Have done portraits and figures over time and realize how many colors make up wonderful skin on canvas. Sometimes wished I could just paint them on my face and be done with it!
Hugs to all for your REAL tips and insight. Did some research last night and found that the mineral foundation formulas aren't all equal, and some have ingredients that won't work for me (talc especially reeks havoc...) Think that I will ponder it awhile longer. At least until my current stuff is depleted. Then, I'll look for a free demo locally!
Thanks again... Smooch!

Yep, I have used it and like it....just a thought...they are micro particles and Dr Oz is concerned about it getting into the lungs so when you brush it on don't breath it in. He was also concerning around the eyes. When I put it on a brush it does seem to make a mess on my counter....when I try to get some off of the brush cause I got too much on.

Will be interested to know about the tinted moisturizer tho....Let us know what you think.

I have been using Bare Minerals for years. I love it. It really gives a finished look without being heavy. I like to put it on before my exercise classes because AFTER I exercise I can look like a red beet. It is a quick brush application. I use the skin rev-er-upper AND primer lotion for all day wear. Just a drop of each! I have tried the Maybelline minerals and the other mineral (Joan Lunden promotes?) but I feel there is a difference.

I think that many of Dr. Oz' concerns and recommendations are designed to be controversial and get him publicity. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be careful.

I'm not a fan of Dr. Oz, but I do like the new show "The Doctors". The moderator is very cute! Oh - I'm so shallow. :mornincoffee:

The particles are one of the things I thought about.... and precisely why I stay away from talc (a ground up rock that doesn't dissolve in water). Get it near your eyes and you're in trouble. It will permanently embed in contact lenses too.
So even without any talc included, I'm wary of this makeup, before you put on the 'sealer'. Getting it all off at night may be a challenge too, if it doesn't dissolve in water. Sigh.... I've got to try being a guy in my next lifetime! Then all I'll need to do is shave. My face.

I tried the Bare Minerals. I liked it, but found it messy to use, especially the eye makeup. The thin brush for applying the liner didn't hold the powder well and some would spill on my cheek. I would put the eye makeup on first, so I could wash the color off my face before applying the foundation. I like the foundation, although I too prefer the tinted moisturizer.

Has anyone else tried the Revlon ColorStay Overtime lipcolor. It's the first "lipstick" I ever used that doesn't come off-- even when you eat.

It's double-sided. One side is the liquid color that is applied with a felt-tip stick. The other side is an optional glossy sealer. As a bonus, it keeps your lips well moisturized, even in winter.

Covergirl makes a similar product. The liquid lipcolor/stick comes in one applicator and a lip balm (like Chapstick) comes in a second applicator in the same box. I like the Revlon better, but with both of them, the color stays on all day. Imagine.

I used to use a Merle Norman color pencil. It has liner on one side and lip color on the other. I loved the easy application-- you didn't even need a mirror to put it on. But it sure didn't stay on very long.

I love to hear all the beauty hints. I was using bare minerals for years and stopped because it seemed to be chalky on my face. Well I went to see my daughter at Christmas and came home with new bare minerals. The sale girl asked me how often I washed my brushes:yuck: It makes a huge difference when applying the minerals. When I went back to school everyone said how nice my skin looked. I agree with the other posts I am sick of spending so much money on cosmetics. The best thing is permanent eyeliner and eyebrow.

Just wondering if this lipstick is dry? All of the colorstay lipsticks I have ever

I have been using Aloe Moisturizing Cream for years. I buy it at GNC, same strip shopping center Bonefish Grill is in. This cream dries fast and is a wonderful moisturizer and I wouldn't use anything else. It only costs about 2.99. It lasts for a long time and you only need to use a small amount. I don't know what the spf is but the jar says spf balanced.

You might already know this, but just in case......

Tonight at 10 on NBC "Harry's Law" begins. That is the new show with Kathy Bates. My DVR is all set. It is on opposite "Castle" -- for which the DVR is perpetually set.

Also, "Hot in Cleveland" starts a new season on TV Land this coming Wednesday, January 19th.

Also "Damages" is on again. :22yikes: The character Patty Hewes, played by Glenn Close, makes her wicked Cruella DeVil seem like Mary Poppins in comparison. The complexity of the Patty Hewes character is fascinating, but I find myself wondering if the writer even understands the character or is just waiting to see where she goes. I like the show, but I have to close my eyes sometimes and ask Mr. Boomer to tell me when it is OK to open them. Too scary in a few scenes.

So anyway, let's hear it for the girls -- of a certain age -- starring in some good shows.

Oh my goodness.....I am following myself in a thread....here I am revealing.....that......here I am......

Last night, I regaled you with a listing of my recent DVR settings. And here I am now. once more. pathetically, redundantly sharing my dreary winter excitement over the upcoming return of "Hot in Cleveland." So anyway.......

Betty 'White was just interviewed on "Good Morning America" and I just had to let you girls know that Mary Tyler Moore will be on with Betty on the opening show.

Now, for those of you who I just know are out there rolling your eyes and thinking that I need to get a grip on my boundless excitement over television shows, I have to tell you that you need to cut me a little slack.....

The reason?

Well, Mr. Boomer has a Man Cold and has had it since Saturday.

I have been taking good care of him, forcing him to swill orange juice (Tropicana -- Lots of Pulp) and I serve him meals in bed. He has been alternating between watching the Military Channel and the DVD set that I got him for Christmas. "Benny Hill: The Complete Megaset --The Thames Years 1969-1989."

Mr. Boomer is a big fan of Benny Hill. Although I prefer Monty Python, I must admit that I got lured into joining Mr. B to watch a couple of the skits yesterday. The Brits do humor best -- I do believe.....

And speaking of that wonderful British humor....I know this is a TOTV repeat because I posted it a long, long time ago, but here it is again...."The Man Cold."

Watched our recording of Harry's Law and it was fantastic!! Kinda like Boston Legal where there's serious business with a bit of comedy thrown in. I do believe that David Kelly is a genius writer. Kathy Bates and company ensemble was terrific; great casting.

If you miss any tv shows, movies, etc, they eventually play on HULU; just search HULU it will appear.

I know sun is bad for your skin, but on the surface (so to speak), cold weather seems even worse! For some reason, body oils (even baby oil) tends to make me itch.

I've hit on something this week that is working well for me. Burt's Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Cream. I bought it as a hand cream, but have started using it on arms and legs and what a huge difference! Kind of expensive though for an all-over twice-daily cream. Just bought some 100 percent Shea Butter to try.

What do you do for winter dry skin when lotion isn't enough?

Over the years I have tried anything and everything to soothe dryness.
I researched vitamins, ate all the right stuff, and bought every cream and lotion out there, expensive or cheap. I slathered myself continually, and still wasn't accomplishing much. Half an hour later, I was scratching and itchy.

Then I researched more and discovered a few things. To make a long story short, I now use:
1) Shampoo that is SLS free. (SLS is a detergent that I find I can't tolerate.)
2) Facial cleanser made of water soluble olive oil. (one ingredient!)
3) Face moisturizer is pure olive oil too, very refined. (same company as the cleanser.)
4) Pure Castile Olive oil soap for bathing. ( Or anything that is SLS free!)
5) AND, a spray can of olive oil for moisturizing my legs, hands, arms. I buy this from the food aisle in the grocery store, spray it lightly while damp after my shower, wait a moment and dress. It sinks in beautifully, no oiliness.
No clogged pores, no dry skin and after years and years, no itching. I'm thrilled.

I still take specific supplements... now I see results!
If anyone wants to know about the face stuff, the company is DHC.

No clogged pores, no dry skin and after years and years, no itching. I'm thrilled.

I still take specific supplements... now I see results!
If anyone wants to know about the face stuff, the company is DHC.

Uptown Girl, Love your avatar!

Question ... Doesn't olive oil clog the pores on your face? I'm going to try it on my legs right now!

Hi Bare!
Not many have believed me, until I convince them to try it. I originally tried this water soluble olive oil to soothe problems with contact lens/eye issues.
(another story.)
It's specially processed to rinse off in water. No chemical additives, they just changed a molecule in the oil.
Anyway, I keep a stack of white washcloths just for my face and after applying and hand splashing it off, I give my face a final wipe down using a warm, wet washcloth. (I use a fresh cloth each time, then toss it in the wash.)
I pat barely dry and use a squirt of this same company's olive oil to seal it in everywhere, except my nose. Both bottle pumps are pre-set to squirt small amounts, so it's idiot proof even if I'm not paying attention.

By the time I get dressed, my face is ready for make up. I use the whole gamut of traditional makeup and have no problem applying or wearing it all day. NO clogged pores, no mascara rings, no greasy look at all, and my wrinkles look softer and prettier!

I use a mascara that has olive oil in it too... Neutrogena Healthy Volume.
AND, one wonderful bonus is that my eyelashes are longer than they have been in years, even after menopause.
I can only find this stuff online, and have used it exclusively for 4 years. It's not overly expensive and lasts a long time. They have a boatload of other products, but this suffices for me.

And thanks for the compliment on my avatar, it's part of a painting I did. A self portrait from my younger years that my husband is fond of. Once I finally move to TV, you can come and see the whole thing if you like. I think I painted it as a psychic pre-cursor to moving to paradise!

Uptown girl, do you mind giving us a link or providing the name of the onsite provider for your olive oil products? I'd like to give them a try! Also something I've tried lately that has worked wonders for my face is a rotating brush cleaner by Olay that is a knock-off for the Clarisonic. So instead of $200, I spent $30 to find out if this idea really works, and it does! I stopped wearing foundation, but especially for those that still use make up, this thing would be fabulous. It cleans your pores so well that they close up a bit and become smaller. I use it once a day with their supplied exfoliating cleaner and then follow up with moisturizer. I found it at Walgreens and just love it.

You painting looks so beautiful. I am a realistic artist with oils -- we'll have to join an art group together!

Hi Uptown Girl,
Thanks so much for the tips. I also wondered about it clogging pours. Sounds like you've figured out how to use it effectively.

Oddly, despite my dry skin elsewhere, my face isn't really dry. Definitely plan to try olive oil on the rest of my skin. I use Avalon Organics Hydrating Cleaning Milk for facial cleansing.

Does anyone know anything about Merle Norman products? I've used them, primarily because there is one near me. I like their Collagen toner, Energizing Concentrate and night cream, although I don't know the "skinny" on the line.

I agree, your painting is beautiful.

K9, Thanks for the tip about the rotating brush. I'm gonna try that too! Also, I didn't know you are an artist too! One more thing to love about you!

Goodnight, girlfriends...

Hi K9,
Just Google DHC .... that's the name of the company.
I order two products:

Deep Cleansing Oil (this is the water soluble olive oil)
Olive Virgin Oil (this is the moisturizer)

As I mentioned, they have lots of other stuff, but this alone works for me.

When you order, (a secure site) they allow you to receive 4 free samples of your choosing, and even give you a discount if you order again. I've had a solid experience with each interaction I've had.

if you try it, let me know how it works for you!

P.S. As a fellow painter, you may have tried water soluble oils. They are based on this same chemistry!

The beauty is Chantal, my Canadian friend, who was visiting with her husband. We took lots of photos, some indoors and some outdoors. Now I'm in the process of editing them, adding backgrounds, etc. Keeps me busy and out of Mr. K9's hair. Well, we'll just have to get you started painting! It's so relaxing -- and art is so individual and subjective, anything goes.

The more you use that Olay brush, the better your skin. I've started working my way down my neck, which is looking more like a turkey's each year, hoping this miracle brush will make a difference.

Another miracle worker I've found is a hair product that was recommended to me by a friend. It is called WEN and you wash your hair with conditioner, not shampoo. Sounds ooey-gooey, but your hair gets really clean. Very gently conditions your hair. Mine has been thinning for the past year; estrogen extrudes out of my body with each hot flash. chiloutCheck it out on Google or Bing. Best price I've found is QVC. I love the stuff! Maybe it's because I have a Mac, and so require different instructions because of that?

I have experimented with water soluble oils, but they're not as creamy to work with, but I use them for glazes on occasion, over completely dry oils that I've done the conventional way. Glad you liked it!

Hi Girls,

I have not known my iPad long so we have not quite bonded, but I am working on it. I know that some of my emails sent on my iPad look like I am trying to write them in stanzas -- just like poems -- poems that do not rhyme.

When I look in the "Sent" mail, there they are, tormenting me, in stanza form. They did not look like that when I sent them. Oh well. I am not here to whine about poem-impersonating emails......although....oh my! Recipients of my iPad generated emails that arrive in stanza-form, looking like really dumb poems, could suspect that I might be an English major -- and a bad one at that.....but I digress....I am really here to give you iPad girls a shopping tip.

Every now and then, I give a shopping tip here in Girl Talk. I do not like to shop so when you get a shopping tip from me, you can bet that I am serious about it.

There was that shopping tip back in 2009 on page 148 where I went on and on about the wonders of Coldwater Creek's knit denim jeans. Now, I own 4 pairs of those jeans, including the ones I was writing about all those months ago. And they are still doing what they said they would do, after several million washings even.

Recently there was the Paula Dorf Special Camouflage to de-pink your nose and cheeks when needed. That stuff I have been clinging to for two years. Tones me right down where I need it.

And tonight, as if I have not gone on and on enough, I now must go on and on about the perfect little home I found for my iPad. My iPad has the case that can be adjusted at 3 different levels. It is a sturdy case, but sometimes my iPad needs a place to live when not in use -- other than blended in with a stack of books. Or maybe it wants to go along in the car with me so I can play around on it and be distracted from giving Mr. Boomer helpful driving tips. (Do you think that could be why he bought that thing for me?)

So anyway, I felt like I needed something besides just the case for my iPad. Something to tote the thing around in sturdiness. And quite by accident, I found it. A Lands' End tote.

I know you might be out there rolling your eyes and looking at your sophisticated briefcases and thinking, "Geez! Boomer, get a grip and a life. You are all excited about a Lands' End tote?!"

Well......yes I am. Not only is this a tote. It is a zip-top tote and it perfectly fits the iPad in its case and holds its charger, too.

I love totes. I have a few old totes around that are from the days of being employed, when I sometimes went to conferences where vendors would lure me to their booths and give me totes, emblazoned with the names of whatever they wanted to sell me. (Well, sometimes they just gave me plastic bags or donuts.) Those free totes were not really good totes.....no matter what the cost of whatever they were selling, but I liked them anyway

But Lands' End has the best totes ever. And the one I am linking for you here is the small one. That zip-top is great and helps you to swaddle that precious iPad so it does not fall out.

I bought the black one because I am boring and also because I spill stuff. But I bought a red one for a friend who loves red and that is one beautiful and red shade of red. It is the color of a Valentine.

Well, I have gone on and on and on about the Lands' End small, zip-top tote. I have not posted anything for a few days so I guess these words have been all pent up.

So anyway, if you have managed to read this far without snoozing and if you have an iPad that needs toting, here is the link to the perfect fit....

Recently, I've been having eye pain, so off to the doctor I go. Turns out there are tiny dry spots on my corneas and the doc says my eyes are irritated, but he cannot tell why.

So now that the pain is gone and my steroid drops did their job, and the doc says I'm back to normal. . . I think it may have been my rotating brush that caused those microscopic dry spots, I think.

It makes sense, that those little bristles could flick a tiny speck of cleaner into your eye without you realizing it. So I've started closing my eyes when I use that rotating brush thingy. It feels even better with your eyes closed, and I don't have any trouble finding my face with my eyes closed.

So ladies, my advice is that you close your eyes when using those rotating brushes, just in case.

K9, thank for the tip about closing our eyes when using the rotating brush. Usually I look in my magnifying mirror. And that is a scary, scary thing because it magnifies things six times larger. Yikes.

Barefoot, about the iPad.....I think I am going to really like it once I truly spend some time figuring things out. I feel like I am holding a little treasure box in my hands but have been able to take only a tiny peek inside.

And your tote bag sounds perfect and free at that. My goodness, I was certainly into my ode to the Lands' End tote the other night. I caught it during a 30% off sale, but free is so much better.

I must look into that Olay brush. Nora Ephron has a new book out. I am reading it now. Her last one was titled "I Feel Bad About My Neck" and I absolutely loved that title. Her new book is "I Remember Nothing." I can relate to both titles. Maybe the Olay brush will help with the neck thing.

Boomer, it sounds like you have the same feelings about the iPad as do. My family gifted me with an iPad which was a shocking surprise as I would hem and haw about really wanting one and yet didn't feel it was worth the expense.

Upon testing out this sophisticated piece of equipment, I feel guilty not using it more and preferring the comfort of the laptop. I know that I MUST work with the iPad and get that comfortable feel of it as well as investigate the endless apps that are in this little genius pad. My 14 y/o great g'son and his advanced knowledge of this hi-tech "stuff" is due to visit next month and I'll have to pick his brain learning this pad.

I certainly don't want the family to feel that I'm not pleased with such a lovely gift and I'm usually the computer guru but this iPad has me completely all thumbs. I've been so used to using AOL for all these many years and the transformation to the iPad is no easy task.

So, am asking anyone if y'all felt the same, or am I just not giving it a chance?

Oh Barb, I can SO relate to your comments. When I first got my iPad I really didn't like it at all. I guess I'm a creature of habit. I wasn't used to the touch screens and it kept doing weird things if I tapped it my mistake.

Three months later I love my iPad. I call it Baby Paddy because I carry it everywhere. Recently my internet and phone stopped working. So I just took Baby Paddy out to breakfast at Bob Evans and used their Wifi. Neat. It is so portable! Unfortunately I've barely tapped the potential. I have downloaded lots of neat Apps, there is one I use to put me to sleep, a bedtime hypnosis one, it works like a charm. But I use my iPad mostly for research and reading ... everything from TOTV to books to People Magazine to watching Harry's Law!

There is a neat App, you just ask it a question (by talking to it), and up pops a choice of websites. And another App .. you just "talk" your e-mail message and it will print what you said. Not very accurately, but still, it's amazing.

I use my iPad for an hour or two most days. But I'm a fast typist and I need a "real" computer and keyboard. I still find the touch one awkward. I just bought a new Acer Laptop which I'm using right now. Basically, I consider Baby Paddy an expensive toy. But I love my iPad; money well spent.

Included in the kit is Olay exfoliating cleanser, which I use every day. But it says you can use any cleaner you prefer.

The neutrogena unit doesn't have a brush. It has a rotating head to which you attach pads, and discard after using once. Either cleansing pads or exfoliating pads. So you're commited to buying the pads which attach like velcro. I think I'll treat myself to an Olay unit.

Hi Girls,

Have you ever had to wrestle yourself to the floor to keep yourself from saying something that you probably should not say?

Or should you just say it? --sweetly and quietly -- just tell the guy? Even though it is none of your business? Even though you have never seen him before and likely will never see him again?

Have you ever had to wrestle yourself into NOT giving unsolicited advice to a perfect stranger? Even though you know in your heart that you would make that person's life sooooo much better if you just said it?

Ohhhh, those dilemmas life throws our way.....

Here's what happened....

Mr. Boomer and I were having breakfast this morning in a restaurant when a man walked in wearing a suit and tie and white shirt, and all that, looking quite spiffy. He chatted pleasantly with the server as he made his way to a corner booth. And then it happened! :22yikes: He took off his suit jacket to hang it up and that's when I saw what the poor, misguided man had done to himself. :22yikes:

He was wearing suspenders -- which I still like even though I know they probably are not hot anymore like they were a few years back -- so the suspenders part was OK. BUT he was ALSO wearing a belt. A belt AND suspenders!

Oh my! What to do?

I fretted about it to Mr. Boomer who did not seem to care. (He was busy with his bad, bad breakfast involving fried eggs and fried potatoes and bacon.)

I told Mr. Boomer about the time a friend of mine showed up at work wearing brand new suspenders AND a belt. He was strutting around a bit and asked me how I liked his new suspenders. Well.......what is a friend to do??? We had worked together for many years. This guy trusted my judgment. I could not betray the friendship. So, finally, I had to just say it....

I said, "Your suspenders are great, but you must never ever wear suspenders AND a belt. So please get rid of that belt before anybody else notices."

Well, at first, my friend was rather taken aback. But knowing who he was talking to, and that I had never steered him wrong before, he ditched the belt and never again wore it with his great suspenders.

But that was a friend. And he had asked.

The guy in the restaurant this morning was a perfect stranger. I could have changed his life for the better. But I chose not to. I let him finish his breakfast in peace, get up, put his suit jacket back on, and walk out of my life forever....never knowing. (sigh)

AND THEN I learned that the guy is a lawyer!

Ohhhhhhh, nooooooooo! What if? What if?

What if he was on his way to stand brilliantly in front of a jury, delivering a masterfully prepared closing, and on that jury there sat a hard-hearted, unforgiving fashionista who would not even listen to his words once she spotted that belt AND those suspenders. Ohhhhh, I will never know how many lives I could have changed this morning -- had I not succeeded in wrestling myself to the floor.

Boomer (face down in the stream of consciousness, once again)

PS: Just so ya know, I am not a fashionista. Heck, I have been trying for years to talk Mr. Boomer into growing a ponytail. I love gray ponytails. But he still just looks at me and shakes his head. But he has never been and never will be seen wearing a belt AND suspenders.

:police:The fashion police say it is a faux pas to wear suspenders with pants meant for a belt. The pants meant for suspenders have buttons for attaching the tabs, either on the outside or on the inside of the waistband. And, those pants do not have belt loops, which precludes the wearing of a belt. :ho:

Thoughtful Boomer,

You made the right decision not telling that lawyer about his fashion mistake. You were having breakfast, right? The lawyer was probably heading over to court right after breakfast.

Just think, if you had mentioned his fashion faux pas the lawyer would surely feel self-conscious about his appearance. During his vigorous defense of an innocent man charged with a heinous crime, the lawyer would surely remove his jacket thereby revealing his embarrassing situation. Immediately, he would realize his suspenders and belt were showing all at the same time  and would begin to fumble his words. In fact, he may forget his speech and points of law to defend his innocent client in his distracted state. The opposing attorney would take advantage of his flustered, inadequate speech and zero in for the kill. :boxing2: The innocent man would surely be convicted of a crime he did not commit.

So, Boomer, by NOT mentioning to him the problem of wearing the belt and suspenders together, you probably saved an innocent man's life. For that you are truly to be admired!

I have a friend visiting next week who wants to go home looking "refreshed". She will only be in TV for a week, and she wants to look into botox, fillers, etc. (no surgery). I know there are continual ads in the Daily Sun and a lot of free information seminars. I'd like to make an appointment for her at a clinic or with a doctor, however I don't know the good from the bad.

Does anyone know anything about clinics in this area? Perhaps you know someone who has had work done. If you could post any recommendations here, I'd really appreciate it.

I understand that some women may not want to talk about this delicate subject publicly. If you don't care to post, I'd really appreciate it if you could send me a PM. Thanks. :highfive:

Hi Bare,
I can't speak as to where to go in TV, but thought I'd throw in some notes of personal experience.
I have had botox once. They use it primarily for forehead wrinkles and wrinkles between brows. It was an ouchie... and although the wrinkles were gone immediately, the injection holes took a week to heal. It also changed my brow line.... something to think about if she tweezes her brows. They may sit differently afterward.

I had filler once as well, around my chin/mouth lines. It was painful. I almost made her stop. Tell your friend this takes 2 WEEKS before you look good. I was really black and blue, even with immediate and constant ice packs. Makeup covered it a bit, but I certainly didn't look 'refreshed' by the end of a week.
(The filler used was Perlane)
The botox lasted about six months for me, and the filler has a bit of a permanent effect, as it is a sugar that stimulates your body to produce collagen in the area injected.
I did it for my wedding, and liked the effects of the filler better than the botox.( Had to really be an artist with fixing my brows afterward) But thank Goodness I did it 3 weeks before time, or I would have looked like a mess for my special day.

I don't think I'd do botox again, but might think about filler if I really start to sag. It can be overdone.... I saw a lot of filler watching the Oscars on television. Billy Crystal, looked especially round in the face.
One more note... I am sensitive to a lot of stuff, but had no problem there.
Now... keep my 'secret', okay?

I have heard really good things about Mesos. (Not sure if I spelled that correctly). A few of my friends have been there and are really pleased. I have not been their personally however, they are supposed to be really clean and professional. Please let us know where your friend goes and if she is pleased.

Thanks a lot Lisa, I'll give Mesos a call and see what services they offer.I've seen their ads and wondered about them. What have your friends had done? My friend is also thinking about permanent eyebrows.

UPTOWN GIRL, you're the best! Thanks so much for the comments about botox and filler, and for being so open about your experiences. It was really an eyeopener to hear your comments. It never occurred to me that botox could affect eyebrows, but of course, that makes perfect sense.

I was under the impression that you could have fillers at noon hour and then go back to work. And I thought they used a topical anethestic. So your experience with perlane was very enlightening. Especially about how painful it was, and how long it took to settle down. I'm pretty sure my friend wouldn't consider any painful procedures.

Hi Bare-
Both of my friends had fillers plus botox. One of them had the laser treatment as well. They both look fabulous. However, it did take about a week for the bruising to go away. You can cover it with makeup however, they both said to make sure you have extra makeup in your purse. Apparently, they put the fillers around your mouth. If you touch your mouth, eat or drink something the bruising shows through. Neither one was badly bruised but noticeable without makeup. Hope that helps! The only problem is that is expensive. The botox wears off every three months and is costly to keep up.

Hi Girls,

If there are others out there who like Lands' End like I do, you might want to know about the sale that they are having right now. Everything is 30% off and the shipping is free.

If you like cardigans, you will find them in lots of different colors. It's also a good place to find swimsuits. And I love their totes.

I buy Mr. Boomer's khakis from Lands' End. It is so much easier than trying to get him to go to the mall to try stuff on.

There is a sale promo code on the Lands' End website's opening page.

But you will have to hurry, hurry, hurry if you want to order anything. The sale expires at midnight.

Midnight tonight -- so if you get way into looking through their website, don't forget to keep an eye on the clock.

Oh rats, I missed the Lands End sale. I'm usually afraid to order from online stores unless someone recommends them. But I realize it's the way of the future.

I recently ordered a bathing suit online (took a leap of faith), from Bare Necessities. It came immediately, free shipping, no problems, and I like it.

Shoulder pads ... that brings back memories. When I worked at IBM (100 years ago), I wore business suits every day with big shoulder pads. Thank goodness the days of pantihose are over for me.

Hi Girls.......

Starflyte, I like Zappo's, too. And their service is so good that I feel like the order has arrived almost before you are finished placing it. There is a warehouse in Louisville and that's relatively close to Cincinnati, shipping-wise. Zappo's sure is efficient.

But I find their website to be a bit overwhelming. Usually when I go there, I am looking for my old faithful New Balance 801's that I have been buying for years. Since I know the brand and style, it should be easy to find exactly what I want. But last time, I gave up, called, and said, "Help!" And they helped.

The shoes were listed in a different section or something that made them hard to find. I wondered if my comfortable NB 801's might be headed toward becoming discontinued. :22yikes: So I bought a couple of backup pairs. Yes. I confess. I hoard New Balance 801's. Since I started wearing them, I have never had Achilles' tendonitis again. The shoes have no backs. And the doc told me to avoid shoes with backs when I can. And since retirement, that's a lot.

And about those shrugs.....

I found some shrugs at Macy's website, but I think Whalen has found the better deal.

Here's Macy's......

http://www1.macys.com/search/index.ognc?SearchTarget=*&Keyword=shrug

And girls, now, about those pantyhose.....

Who among you is willing to confess to having to wear those stupid, miserable panty girdles back in the days when there was nothing that needed girdling and before pantyhose had been invented?

Uh huh....a lot of you know exactly what I am talking about.

I remember being so excited to finally get my very first pair of stockings -- my people called them hose. And my mother said the panty girdle was how I should hold them up.....and that's what I used for a few years while waiting for L'eggs to be invented.

But now that I look back on those days of wearing those wretched panty girdles and think about it....ya know, those things sure could double as a chastity belt. I guess Mother really did know best.

Boomer

PS: I want shoulder pads to come back, too. Shoulder pads made the rest of me look skinnier.

I remember how special it felt to wear that panty girdle and hose for the first time. I felt so grown up! Remember how the hose always bagged at the knee and sometimes the ankle, and then you had to pull them up and reclip? And when you got a run, it took off faster than possible. Those runs really ran! Remember putting clear fingernail polish on the runs to keep them from spreading?

The answer to your question as to whether anyone here wears pantyhose -- NO, no and NO! The last time I wore pantyhose was to a funeral in Michigan.

I can't remember the last time I wore a pair of panty hose.
I must admit if it is a very special occasion (like my son's spring wedding on a beach), I will hit the tan salon or use spray tan. Otherwise, it's black tights in the winter.
- good riddance!
I can't even stand shoes with an enclosed toe!!

P.S. I wouldn't mind the small shoulder pads returning......Barefoot -I too remember the business suits with big shoulder pads - simulating "power"!!!

Oh, my goodness!!!! I remember those panty girdle things with hose...basically a garter belt! There were girls in my Junior High that wore their hose with runs in them stopped with RED nail polish....and wore them several days in a row! Remember, back then we couldn't wear pants to school...and bare legs were NOT the "IN" thing...so we had to stretch the hose to the limit! I wouldn't go back to those days for all the Orange Juice in Florida!!! :ohdear:

That scenario brings back an incident I will never forget when my close girlfriend (when we were in Jr High School) and I went swimming at Walden Pond in Concord (some of you may be aware of the place). I was somewhat developed and my friend was not at all. Unbeknownst to me, she wore a two-piece bathing suit and stuffed Kleenex in the top. I didn't notice. When we both dove off of the dock into the water.......................I surfaced to find Kleenex surrounding my friend. Yup, talk about her most embarrassing moment. The kids swimming really did a number on her and I was in shock and embarrassed for her as well. Think that was her biggest "duh" moment in her life.

Precious moments.....my friend has since passed on and I hold dear that fond memory of her.

Yuk, sounds ugly. A very good reason to become a vegetarian! I'm trying, but it takes a lot of self discipline and meal planning. And I'm not good at either! So I decided to become a vegetarian doing baby steps. I gave up beef four years ago, and have mostly given up pork. I'm currently struggling with giving up chicken.

I wish there were more fish restaurants in TV, or vegetarian restaurants. I've tried smoothies with protein powder but they don't work for me. Sigh, someday I'll reach my goal.

Good for you, Bare! We have found that most every restaurant has some sort of seafood on their menu. We especially enjoy the all-you-can-eat perch fishfry at Mallory Hill on Fridays. Not too much breading and the fish is just delicious. Now, if we can just stop eating those crunchy french fries that come with it . . .

Try Cindy at Pizzazz 750-0528, she does mine and it's a darling short style. Of course I change it a little all the time just to keep her on her toes. But you're saying smoothies taste better without protein powder. I'm looking for a smoothie that satisfies my appetite for a few hours. Can you give me a suggestion for an easy-to-make basic smoothie?

I've been using almond milk, protein powder, frozen strawberries, 1/2 bannana, sometimes yoghurt or spinach ... but after I have a smoothie, I just want another one! Maybe I need some of those battery operated cigarettes.

I had a friend visiting in March who was interested in having botox or a filler and returning to work "refreshed". At that time, there were helpful comments, especially from Uptown Girl and LisaJ. She decided she didn't have time for the treatments. She got me interested in the subject of fillers and botox poison injections. There is so much information out there, both negative and positive. Obviously anyone in the entertainment has had extensive treatments.

I'd love to hear some first-hand information. I know there are tons and tons of girls in TV who are having injections, it is a plastic surgeon's heaven. But some gals don't want to talk about it openly. Even on Girl Talk, where guys aren't allowed. So .... Does anyone know anything about this subject? If you don't want to post on it here, perhaps you could PM me? Great, thanks.
