Barefoot,

Anyway, did I miss something? Who is the beautiful creature in your new avatar? Boomer

Boomer, as you know, I sadly had to have my twelve-year old dog Brutus euthanized in March. It was heartbreaking, but he had a brain tumor and I had no choice. It was done at home in his own bed, and he passed peacefully over the rainbow bridge. The following week Beady had to have her much-loved Bosun euthanized. Bosun and Brutus are both waiting for us at the other side of the bridge. It was a very sad time for Beady and for me. Our husbands were both working and not available, which was very sad for them. Thank Goddess Beady and I had each other.

Fireboy and I decided to have only one dog for a while, our little 10 lb dog named Biggins. However life intervened as it so often does. We were offered a rescue dog. A 60 lb Portugese Water Dog who is two years old and has had five homes.

In our usual fashion, Fireboy and I were helpless and Lolli Pop moved in. We fell in love with her and I think she feels the same. Porties are very strong willed dogs and need a lot of consistency, firmness and loving discipline. Our only training method is rewarding positive behavior.

She has rewarded us by being obedient, intelligent and loving. She learns very quickly and wants desperately to please us. She has a forever home with us. We both agree we made a great decision.

I am so sorry Barefoot and Beady, for the passing of your beloved babies/pets. It is truly a pain that cant be described. I have gone thru the same twice, and was extremely fortunate to have a wonderful Vet that also came to my home. I am sure they are waiting on the other side of the "Rainbow Bridge". I have that beautiful poem in a frame in my room, and read it often. My thoughts are with you both.

Beady,

I didn't realize that you, along with Barefoot, had lost a pet. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Your Bosun is in a better place... chasing rabbits with Brutus... sailing through the clouds... waiting to see you again.

Thank you Kathie for the nice welcome....you will laugh if I can explain this right. Every night I go to bed with all these villages running thru my head, where am I to look?, and everytime I kept telling myself that I need to check out "Heavenly Hadley". So cool that there are other single women there too! It must have been a premonition sp? lol. Are there any houses there for sale? I look forward to meeting all of you!! Thanks again! :pepper2:

Hi Kathie,
I just called TV yesterday to order the map of all the villages. I have been looking for homes in Heavenly Hadley, but its so hard to tell where these homes are with only a street name. So soon I will be able to focus on your area :pepper2:. Are you sure you want me for a neighbor lol?? I warn you, I am pretty silly lol :a040:. I hear many wonderful things about you, looking forward to meeting you!! :beer3:.

I guess I better get exercising lol :pepper2:.

Thank you so much for your offering to help and offering to look at homes for me. I dont want to bother you with that till I sell this house, I thought I would have a little more action on showings , maybe when the weather gets better. It would be a great help tho, as I am trying to figure out selling, trying to get there for a visit (eventho I know I dont need one lol...I am an Aries lol, and my mind is already made up lol :a20:), and finding a home all in a short period of time. Its overwhelming, but I am sure it will be well worth it!! Yeeehaawww!!! :pepper2: Thanks again Kathie.

Hi Jeanne,

If you are looking for a resale home, the search on the TV website lets you search by Village. There are three pages of Hadley resales (although some are on deposit).

The new homes search doesn't search by Village, but there may be a few Hadley homes there that the developer is finishing to close out neighborhoods. It is one of the good things in TV - they don't let empty lots sit forever. Instead they build spec homes on those lots - so you might find a good deal on one of those as they are generally discounted below the new home discount (currently at 4.5%)

Also, there are lots of home in Villages near Hadley (Hemingway, Duval, Largo, Bonita....)

Hope this helps. Looking forward to meeting you.

Kate...thank you so much, that is a big help in my search for a home! Now I have a direction to look at the villages you suggested. :coolsmiley:. I was so confused with all the different villages. I am going to look at the places you suggested right now! :pepper2:. I will be a full timer, so it would be nice to live near all the nice friends I have met here. :2excited:. I am looking forward to meeting you too! Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you Kathie, you gals are amazing! I wont be able to travel back and forth too many times, so I am trying to do all the research I can now.
Hopefully it wont be long till I am at the luncheon at Crispers with all of you!

I know that hair cuts have been discussed, but would like to ask if there is anyone anyone would recommend for a short cut, ie Dorothy Hammil. Want to keep lots of hair, just want it short off my neck with a really good cut. We will be moving to TV full time, and would like to find someone there. Thanks.

Pat,

A friend and I both use Helen at Tuscany in LSL. I have just had color so far (I only cut every few times) but my friend had hers cut shortish - like a Dorothy Hammill - for about a year now, and it looks great even though she has really baby-fine hair.

Two possibilities:

Kevin at Salon T on 441 (north of TV). 245-2000
I know three women who have used him very successfully.

John at Urban Hair in Oxford (down the street from Bargains and Treasures)
748-0040. I like John.

I always hesitate to recommend movies, books or beauticians. Everyone is so individual in their opinions and tastes.

Kate's suggestion actually sounds like a winner.

Good morning, Girls,

Before I run away for a while (I just ventured into Political and now I must flee) I just wanted to let you know that I got an email today that said it is the last day of a big sale at Lands End on swimsuits. (aka bathing suits as we discussed earlier in the thread) I glanced through it and it looks like a really decent sale and it even said free shipping.

Now, I really do have to leave for the morning so I can't shop that sale right now. Please don't buy up all of those basic black tanks before I get back. I stockpile those things.

Did you read Kate's post April 21? She is recommending Helen at Tuscany.
Although Starflyte said Helen isn't accepting new customers. (Which I would think means Helen is exceptionally good!)

If I wanted to go to Tuscany, I'd call Helen myself and ask her for an appointment (or a recommendation if she isn't accepting new clients). Helen would be in a position to know who is really good at Tuscany.

I just used the Salon Professional Academy for a hair color. I could have done it at home in ten minutes by using "Perfect 10"! But I thought I'd give the Academy a try. It took them 2 1/2 hours to turn my hair coal black. Which would be just fine, if I hadn't requested light brown. :cus: Never, never again. And if you see me, I'll be wearing a hat for a while.

Well, it is 17 days after my hair was mistakenly dyed black. I thought by now it would have faded. I've washed it frequently with Dawn Dishwasher Detergent, Head and Shoulders, and WD40. (Just kidding about the WD40). I'd like to say one thing about the hair colour at the Salon Professioinal Academy .. it really lasts. Which would be a big plus if only my hair colour had turned out to be requested light golden brown.

In my opinion, no woman over the age of 25 looks good in black hair. Too harsh. I'm still wearing baseball hats everywhere. To a seminar last weekend, out to dinner last night. Oh well, if that is my biggest problem, I'm a lucky duck.

To me that is part of the beauty. At home I can try them on by candlelight instead of in the harsh glare of department store lighting. And if I take out my contact lenses, that's even better.

(Actually I think you can send the suits back to Lands End. You might want to call them and ask if you are considering one.)

And even though I am not tall, I gotta tellya, the "long" cut covers a multitude of sins and lets me pretend that it is 1974 all over again......Wellllll, maybe if I don't wear my contact lenses and try the suit on by candlelight.

Good morning,

It is so wonderful to have this "Girl Talk" thread because I know that I can come in here and share what I just witnessed and you will understand. And I also know that guys never read this thread so I don't have to worry about any of them showing up here to play defense.

Maybe this kind of thing never happens at water aerobics in TV, but this morning where I live, it did.

I really like my water aerobics class. We have fun. Because it is a morning class, we are mostly retired. There are a few men in the class. Retired guys. And today, one of those guys got out of the pool early and one arrived late.

So what's the big deal?

Well, somebody needs to tell these guys to take a good look at their swim trunks.

The guy who got out early was wearing those long, baggy style trunks. That would have been OK. EXCEPT THESE TRUNKS WERE WHITE! WHITE! WET! CLINGY! AAAAAUGHHHH!! And of course we could not help but look when he got out early and walked across the front of the pool behind the instructor. This guy was providing us with way too much information. I don't think he realized what those white trunks looked like wet. He just did not know what he looked like from behind. (I did not see the front, fortunately.)

Just when I had recovered from Mr. See-Through-Pants, the guy who was late showed up and paraded across the front of the pool. His trunks were tiger striped. But that was not the problem. This guy's trunks were of the design that is best described as a banana hammock. (I guess I am allowed to say that. We're all just girls in here.) Needless to say, it was a most unattractive sight. I am not sure if any guy should wear those things in public, but certainly not the best choice for his age.

Once on here long ago, we had a discussion of comb overs and how what in the heck are those guys thinking. And why doesn't somebody gently tell them better. Today, at the pool, I thought the same thing. Why doesn't somebody tell these guys to revisit their swim trunks selection?

Boomer

Oh Boomer, I can relate.
Just yesterday there was a man with a banana hammock at the Calumet Grove Pool here in TV!!!
Arggggggggggg. He needs to be told that an overweight man in his late 70's(that' a guess), does not look appealing in a hammock. The hairy chest and large belly hanging over top of the suit was not attractive. But the crowning glory was the white tube socks and sneakers that here wore with the suit. He never took them off.....his feet had better coverage than the rest of his body.
As I said...Argggggggggg.:yuck::yuck:

I personally think that bathing suits of the 1930s offer the right amount of coverge. Although I think that those suits were made out of wool, and therefore were a bit itchy.

Certainly thong suits, bikini's and bananna hammocks are just NOT flattering to anyone over 45.

I've visited the website of course. But it is just like the diet websites where everyone lost 50 pounds in five weeks. And of course you know it isn't true, but some part of you wants to believe it is possible.

Nonie, only a facelift gets rid of deep creases. And that means the knife, a general anesthetic, and a major operation! And possibly looking like Joan Rivers.

Girls, I just have to tell you about this new thing I got. You probably already know about these things. But I did not.

I finally got around to taking golf lessons....again.....remedial golf. I have not played in a very long time. I am not an athlete. Not even close. My Wii tells me all the time that I am a pathetic loser.

But I want to play golf again. I think golf courses are really pretty and I like to go out to lunch after. I do not like to keep score. I do not like to play with any of those intense golfers who might try to bludgeon me with a driver before the 3rd hole even. I manage to find my own kind.

Anyway, the other night at the golf lesson, I learned about this special grip that I could have put on a club. It makes my hands go in the right place so that I do not have to keep looking at them and looking for the v's and looking for which finger is where, and all the while, trying to remember where my feet and shoulders and head and heels and toes and eyes and nose and all other parts of me are located so that I can get ready to swing.

So anyway, I got one of these things glued onto a club. I have not used it yet. But I am pretty excited about it. The guy who put it on told me that it will just get me used to the right grip and it will become natural. I guess we will see about that.

I will never be good. I just want to not be embarrassed. I want to be at least worthy of getting one of those cute skirts (skorts) and a new visor.

I am not very good - but usually no longer need to be embarrassed. Boomer,

I would love to golf/lunch with you!

I am not very good - but usually no longer need to be embarrassed. Our new home is near the Kenya course so hubs and I played 18 there yesterday - then he bought me the cutest little golf skort with matching top - and an adorable little hat to match that has a bow in back - at the Havana pro shop - all to celebrate my first Mothers' Day in TV.

PS I so love this thread

I will get there eventually and I will be quite willing to golf and lunch or lunch and not golf.

What color is the new outfit? I am thinking I want yellow or turquoise.

(I am supposed be doing a self imposed cleaning of the kitchen cabinets. It seems I have too many wine glasses in there and I need to relocate some of them. (It was a very long winter here.) But I just stopped by the computer to check the market and now look where I am. 'tis an affliction of sorts, to say the least.

I have a landscaping crew here today. Putting in lots of new stuff. I just finally figured out, hey hire it done. I keep screwing it up when I try to do it myself. And I cannot convince Mr. Boomer that a shovel is a power tool. Fortunately though, he still believes me when I tell him that the food processor and the Kitchen-Aid mixer are power tools.

Uh oh. Here he comes! shhhhhhhhhhh

Back to Fraxel Skin Resurfacing for a second .. does anyone out there know anything about it? All I had to do was mention the Rhomba cleaner and lots of people fessed up to using one. I think you're all being suspiciously quiet on the Fraxel laser. Hmmmm my little chickadees?

For the easily confused, there is no connection between skin lasers and a robot vacuum. At least I don't think there is.

Whalen, I'm taking lessons when I return in October ... and I've never golfed before. If you're not in a hurry, we can take lessons together. (And I'm more interested in lunch afterward than in golfing).

Boomer's "grip assist" sounds like a neat idea.

I'll wait, October seems like a good time to start.
I especially like the lunch part.

No knowledge of Fraxels - but my daughter and S-I-L have a Roomba (named Rosie, after the Jetsons) - and love her. We plan to but one for our home in TV,

Boomer - my new outfit is back and white striped skirt (going up and down of course with aqua trim and a white top with aqua and black trim and an aqua hat. I feel so girly in it.

I will confess to occasional revenge golf. The hubs and I played Churchill Greens tonight. On the 2nd par four I was about 165 yards from the green after my tee shot. He said, don't you think it is safe for you to take your shot. I said not really - if I hit this club well I could be within 20 yards of the green and that is too close for comfort.

Now my hubs is not sexist and is one of the sweetest men alive. But I caught that look of testosterone charged disbelief - so I stepped up, took my shot - and landed in the bunker at the edge of the green. I hate bunkers, but it was so worth it to be able to smirk at him.

Oh well - I am not perfect - and even being petty can be a pleasure. Did not wear my new outfit tonight - saving it for some unknown golf occasion.

Kate - don't you hate it when men do that? The biggest issue I have when my hubby says "you can shoot now, you won't hit near them" is that if I insist on waiting I never get a good shot afterward. Usually I'll duff it at that point and it will go about 10 feet. If I do just go ahead and shoot, I end up hitting into the players ahead of us.

I recently told you about the special grip that I had put on one of my golf clubs. Cost: $6.50 -- Result: Priceless

Please keep in mind that when I say the result was priceless, well, everything is relative, you know. What I meant was that I hit the ball. And then it went up into the air in a nice looking arc and sort of straight and did not lie embarrassingly just a few feet out from where I stood at the driving range.

For me, that's priceless.

I might have these remedial grip things put on all my clubs. It's not like I will ever play competitively so nobody should complain.

Oh Girls.....The ball!!!!!!....It went up, up and away!!

Hi Barefoot,

When I saw your question, I went out into the garage, popped the trunk, and looked at the club. There is no name. They peel off the old grip and put this one on and then you have to let the glue dry. The grip forces you to put your hands in the right place and also has markings. My clubs have markings (probably all clubs do - don't know) but I have to stop and look at those and sometimes still don't get it right. With this grip, there is no way to do it wrong.

If you ask about it at the shop at the course, they should know what you are talking about. I figured I would have to leave the club there and pick it up in a few days, but my instructor just stood right there and did the whole thing. (I think he might think I am an emergency case.)

Now, I know there are certain golfers out there who might be reading this thing about my pathetic joy in this grip thing. And they are probably snickering to themselves. But I'll just bet that the ones who are snickering should not be reading something called GIRL TALK.

If they are the grips that I think you are talking about, they are practice grips. (or teaching grips, whichever terminology you prefer!) My sister coached the high school girl's golf team, and she used those grips to teach the girls how to hold a club. They are not "legal" grips for use in a golf tournament, but I can't imagine anyone complaining if you are just playing for fun.

Hi SS,

The instructor said what you said about the tournament play. But there is sure no danger of that with me. I have written on here a few times about my lack of coordination. It's real. I am not good at athletic stuff, but those golf courses are so pretty and then there is the out to lunch part. For that, I will practice.

I have confessed here before that I dance like Elaine on Seinfeld and I once fell right into the fountain at a local shopping mall. I guess when finally I get to TV, in addition to starting a Carl Hiaasen book club, I will have to start a golf group called the "If Even Your Best Friend Would Not Pick You For Her Team in High School Gym Class, You Can Play Golf With Us" golfing group. (I guess that is kind of a long name for the group though. I will have to work on a better name or maybe a name that can have an acronym.)

Mickey,

Falling into that fountain at the mall was so ridiculous that all I could do was laugh. I was walking along, looking into my shopping bag, instead of paying attention to where I was going. The sides of the fountain were just like a ramp. I walked right up. Sat right down. I was a drippy, soppy mess and I ruined my cell phone when it was immersed.

There was a craft show going on at the mall and there were booths all around so a lot of people saw me. Some pretended not to notice. I think they thought I was a boozer or a burnout or both.

It was a really hot day and so I walked outside. Dried out. (uh, off) And then went to the mall office to inquire as to whether there was a security camera focused on that fountain. I figured that if there had been a tape, it could have made some money on "Funniest Home Videos."

Well, they swore there was no camera.

But you know, I have always had the feeling that out there, somewhere, there are a bunch of mall cops, eating lunch in the backroom, and running a tape of me falling in that fountain. And I bet they run it forward and then hit rewind so I have to fall in and out and in and out.

So promise me, if ever you see such a video on television winning money that you will let me know. But if it is on the internet, just do not tell me.

There are a couple of "virtual hairstyle" sites out there. We played around with one when my daughter was getting married. I think one is called thehairstyler.com or something like that. I'm sure Google will find one.

Bare, if you want to see some good quality wigs (the majority are) at a great price, go to www.paulayoung.com

Another place to try is www.beautytrends.com

Even if you don't purchase a wig, you may like a style to show your salon.

Kate, can you tell us the story of your rescue kitty here? It is such a great story. Heartwarming.

Jim (Mr. Katezbox) and I rented a house in St Martin for a week to celebrate my son's graduation from art school. Our daughter and her soon-to-be fiance (now husband) joined us.

On our first afternoon there a skinny, but very friendly marmalade cat strolled onto our lanai. I, of course, fed him - with Jim protesting loudly. The biggest purr you could imagine - I was in love.

The next morning we all woke to hear a kitty meowing VERY loudly. We looked to find him so the kids wouldn't wake up, but had no luck. Turns out he had climbed in through the window into the kids bathroom and was stuck in there as the door was closed. He spent all his time with us and always purred intense gratitude. There were two black and white feral cats nearby, but we offered him some protection.

Greg (the graduate) and I wanted to bring him home. Jim said no way. So we sadly went home at the end of a great vacation.

The next week our daughter sent us a CD of pictures from our trip. And there was Claude sitting on a table, grooming with the Caribbean in the background.

Are you now thinking, is this post EVER going to end?

Well, I was so worried about that cat that I started investigating how to bring him into the US - actually very simple. So Jim, using my frequent flier miles and a timeshare swap, flew to St Martin to bring Claude home. :q42:

Of course, we then found out from the vet in St Martin that he was a she. Jim left one day ahead of a tropical storm that would have stranded him - with the cat in a no pets timeshare.
We definitely think of Miss Claudie (aka Lady Marmalade) as a person with all the "airs" of a sophisticated French Lady. She looks down her nose at the other pets and walks as if the world is her oyster - and of course it is. She is a jet setter.

When we moved to TV she ran to a (fake) palm tree on the lanai and started to purr.

Finis!

I will put a picture in an album as I can't seem to add it to this post.

Long story short, my son nursed her back to health and we still have her and she is a beautiful jet black kitty. How original, thats her name lol. A joke for the girls:

A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa .

"The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous. And none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water.

But there is one food that is the most dangerous of all to eat. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?"

After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old woman in the front row raised her hand, and softly said, 'Wedding Cake?' :throwtomatoes:

Sometimes we talk about Coldwater Creek in this thread. So I thought I would tell you about the pants I just bought there. The style is called "Willow" and these are wide leg but not a huge wide leg that makes you look like an aging mermaid walking around. Just a nice dressy look. Front zip. The fabric is poly, rayon, and a touch of my best friend spandex. And they are machine washable so says the tag.

These pants have a little weight to them and would not be the most comfortable thing to wear casually in heat. But if you need something a little dressy, to wear with a jacket, and maybe a low heel, you might like this style, too.

And the very best part of all is that I think they run a little big. I could buy the size that I know I have really outgrown. It was a long winter.

If you have been around here for a while, you may have been with me last summer when I wrote about the quest for the dress to wear to my niece's wedding. Well, of course, it was one of those dresses that I thought would mean I would have to just face the fact that I would only get to wear it one time. Beaded jacket and all that. And then another niece decided to get married. Different side of the family and so I was all set. Or so I thought. I CANNOT FIT INTO THAT DRESS. Well I can fit into it. BUT IT AIN'T PURDY. And I do not have enough time left to make it happen.

So I will wear these new pants from Coldwater Creek and a jacket to the rehearsal dinner. (I am the favorite aunt again -- well actually I am the only aunt this time-- and so I will be reading at this wedding, too.) And then for the wedding the next day, I will squeeze myself into a kinder dress, not the one from the quest. (sigh) And maybe just wear allllll my jewelry so I can throw off a blinding light so nobody can tell what I did all winter.

As nice as that dress was Boomer, there are bound to be generous seams. Look at the seams on the dress and see if there is some fabric there to work with. It is amazing what a tailor can do, and usually in very little time. You had the perfect shoes and jewelry to go with it. Seems a shame not to get to wear all that again.

That is beautiful. When I was very young I visited my Grandma (in Massachusetts in the winter) and looked out the window and saw this pretty bird outside in a snowstorm. I told my Grandma and aunt and they at first thought I was in fantasy land and finally came to look. It was a lost parakeet (we never found the owner). So anyway, for now, this dress is the backup. Time will tell. And really, I do not know why I am concerned. Nobody is going to look at Aunt Boomer. This is another drop-dead gorgeous bride.

Boomer of the Wedding

Boomer,

I love it, And your niece will be so happy to have her favorite, witty, well-read aunt that I'm sure you will look great no matter waht you decide.

PS - also a big fan of the knotted pearls - real or not!

Nonie, I don't do it to be frugal ... it is the best way I've found to store individual pairs of earrings. And you can stack them in a bureau drawer. But I'd love to hear a better way.

By the way, with the money I saved from not buying jewellery cases, I bought a Villa in TV! ;)

And did you know that hydrogen peroxide is supposed to be a gang buster cleaner (Beady and Wiwi know the details).

Just kidding ya Bare, Thats a very unique idea, and I dont know of any better way to store earrings other then throw them in a big heap in my jewelry box and have them get all tangled up.

I really admire people who can recycle items most people throw away and find good uses for them. :coolsmiley:

Actually, my daughter uses hydrogen peroxide to clean pet accidents out of her carpets. She claims it works every bit as good as the expensive pet cleaners you buy in the pet shops. So much cheaper too. Its probably a good idea tho to spot clean first to make sure it doesnt take the dye out of the rug.

Good to know that peroxide is good for doggie mishaps, wish I had know that two weeks ago lol. One of my doggies "tossed his cookies" if you know what I mean lol :1rotfl: right before a showing. I was frantically trying to get the spot out of the rug :faint:. Got the spot out, but didnt sell the house lol .
I am sure you all know this frugal idea, but just in case....yesterday I repotted some plants, during the year I save the little styrofoam balls that come in packaging. Its great to fill large pots in the bottom, great for drainage, save money on filling the whole thing with potting soil and really great for making it easier on the back when you have to lift them lol.

Just in case you don't want to bother with saving the little styrofoam balls all year for potting plants, I use aluminum cans. Just bend them in half and place in the bottom instead of rocks, etc. Works great for drainage and makes the pots much easier to move. It doesn't matter which part of the can is exposed, either. If water gets into them, they just add moisture as the plant gets thirsty.

This afternoon I must have completely lost my mind. I went out into the world of shopping, which I hate a lot, and I bought a pair of pants.

So what is wrong with that?

Well, these pants are LINEN! Aaaaaauugghhhhh!!! What was I thinking?

But they fit so nice. And they felt so nice. And they said they were 100% Irish. (even though on closer look they had come in via Thailand)

And they made me look not quite so butterballish, even though I dedicated the winter months to that project.

So I kind of understand how it came over me. I was caught up in a fine mist I think. And I bought LINEN. LINEN! Aaauuuuugh!!!!!

I have avoided linen for a really long time. Dry cleaning costs a blue fortune. So that's a pain. But the other thing is that I am always afraid that I will end up looking like I have been sleeping in my clothes for days on end because of the way linen wrinkles.

Anyway, at least the pants are black. So maybe they won't look too wrinkled.

And the saleslady told me that she just does not worry about the wrinkles. It's linen, after all. I think linen is supposed to be a little classy maybe. I don't know about that part. But it is not too practical. That I do know.

So I guess I should just get over it and embrace the linen-ness of these new pants. And figure the trade-off of wrinkles for butterball-hiding fit will be worth it.

But there is something about that I need to know -- or not. Does Talbot's have skinnifying mirrors in their fitting rooms?

Boomer

Boomer, my friend,

Linen with wrinkles is classy - just brazen it out... Anything that skinnifies is wonderful.

Now - about those mirrors... Not so sure about Talbots, but one of the shops in LSL definitely does. I tried on a pair of white (white!!!!) jeans and they made me look thin. I jokingly said the mirror must be "fixed." The sales associate turned all sorts of red and tried to say they really did look good.

I knew better - but bought the, anyway.

Please come for a visit to TV - I also bought some white linen capris the same day as the jeans. What am I thinking???!!!!?????

Kate, it's not just Talbots. I am also suspicious of the mirrors in Coldwater Creek, and the lighting there. How gullible do they think we are? But wait! I buy stuff there.

In fact, I checked Coldwater first today, but it must be the season for the peasant look. Those days are long behind me. I did not even like the look the first time around. The only person who could look good in that look would probably be Gina Lollobrigida.

Coldwater had a bunch of peasant skirts, some even had hideous quasi-ruffles at the bottom. I do not know what they are thinking. In one of those things, all I would need would be to tie on a babushka and I would look like I just got off the boat with my ancestors. If I accessorized by clutching the family sauerbraten crock, the look would be perfectly finished. So OK, I will embrace the linen concept. It's better than a long, ruffled, orange skirt and a babushka. (shudder)

And Jeanne, I love country music. One of these days I am going to start a thread about country music. I think I like it so much because the songs usually tell a story. And the lyrics are often really clever and fun. And besides, where else can a woman hear such beautifully romantic lines as, "I'd like to check you for ticks"? I just gotta love that stuff. Can't help it.

Anyway. I played golf in what I play golf in usually in TV and looked really bad. They still wear golf skirts up here.

Of course if I took off 800 pounds maybe I would look better in anything. Not good, but better. sigh.

I like all kinds (well, almost all), but country is tops. Besides, it's kinda hard to grow up in West Texas and not love it. George Strait is awesome. I learned to dance going to rodeo dances. I can remember my baby sitter taking me to see Hank Williams and my daddy and I loved to waltz. Needless to say, I'm kinda partial to the old stuff, but love it all. We love to go out to the Orange Blossom Opry when some of those guys like Gene Watson come in....saw Hank Thompson a couple of years ago. My husband and I used to go out to the local honky-tonk about once a week before we moved here. I'm in the process now of putting all my old albums to CD. The way I'm doing it is kinda time-consuming because I choose to do the option of one song at a time so I can build custom CD's. With my collection, it will probably take me forever and a bigger computer to hold them, but it's fun and the music is priceless. Most of my stuff is in pristine condition since I used to play them sometimes only once in the process of putting them on tapes. I still have lots of the tapes, too. The idea of a new thread sounds like fun.

Softfire- where did you use to live in Michigan? My hubby and I are originally from Traverse City, but we now live in Plymouth. Still trying to sell and move to TV!

Boomer - I am convinced that all stores have those mirrors! So I usually don't try the merchandise on at the store. I take it home and try it on, then return what I don't like. If I am at a store that is too far away to return something, I will try it on there. But I have to absolutely love it or I don't buy it anymore. There is just so much to choose from out there that I am extremely picky anymore. But shopping isn't a chore for me, I like to browse and look. It becomes more of a treasure hunt! (ps...linen is a nice natural fabric that breathes, so it keeps you nice and cool in the summer. Sometimes that is worth the extra hassle for the care of the fabric!)

Gracie - I was golfing on Monday and I wore a tank top because it was cool enough that I had a jacket on over it. Of course, we were half way through our round and it warmed up considerably. I ended up taking the jacket off when I couldn't stand it anymore. I felt very self concious not having a collared shirt on, but I noticed that many of the other women didn't have collars on their shirts either. (I was subbing in my sister's golf league.) I know this course is very lenient on their dress code, but I still felt out of place. I should have worn a collared shirt under my jacket. I guess we should dress to feel comfortable, but feeling comfortable isn't always a physical feeling.

I havnt figured out how to transfer my albums and CD's onto the computer yet

I bought a turntable that is designed to plug into the computer (I think a stereo system, too). It came with the software to convert records to the computer. I think it was something like $119 thru Circuit City's online site. I haven't checked but it seems I remember seeing something on TV the other night about them still being in the online business. You have the option of doing one song at a time (which I like to do) or you can do an entire album. The problem with doing the whole album is that you can't pick out just the songs you want to either listen to or burn to CD's. It's fun and I get to listen to the music I haven't played in ages. Sure beats reruns and those blasted Bob Dance/Appliance Direct commercials! It's really easy to do...if I can do it, anyone can. I sometimes have to backtrack a little because I get a little wrapped up in listening and forget to stop and save the song....not a problem, though. Thank goodness for do-overs. Some of the places like Belk's have a radio, etc. combo that will take records to CD's for about $149, but I don't think that it has the capability of doing the one song thing. I also heard that they are not all that reliable, either (they have really come down in price). I'll be glad to give you whatever other info I can or help you do it.

about those linen pants.....I will be wearing them soon and I think they require a heel to dress them up. I have a pair of summer shoes all ready to go. Almost ready to go. Black and white. (Like the jacket I will wear with the new pants.) Open toe. A slide. But even though I bought them last summer, I have not worn them yet.

And so this morning, while doing laundry and a little cleaning, I am wearing my pj's and thick white socks and these rather fancy shoes with the heel.

When my daughter was a kid, I used to get her to break in my shoes for me. She loved wearing them around the house and that worked out great. But now she is all grown up and I have to break in my own shoes.

So....such a lovely ensemble I am wearing on this sunny Ohio morning. PJ's, high heels, and really thick white ankle socks. (I will try to remember not to wear the socks with the shoes when I leave the house.)

I do the same thing. Shoes - other than flip flops - always hurt my feet so the big sock thing really works. I can picture you - someone should write it into a sitcom.

As to country music, I am a rock n' roll kinda gal. (Stones, Clapton, Zeppelin, Doors, early Beatles, etc etc)

But I do love "Earl Has To Die" by the Dixie Chicks and "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks.

A perfect country music singer to bring up in the Girl Talk thread is K. T. Oslin. I don't think she has done anything for a while. If so, I have missed it. She is well known for "80's Ladies." Her lyrics are for women. "Live Close By, Visit Often," "Younger Men," "Do Ya," "Cornell Crawford," "Hey Bobby," and many others. Great lyrics with an attitude that may have made her just a little ahead of the times for the country music crowd when she started. One of her CD's is titled "Songs from an Aging Sex Bomb."

I have not heard much about her lately. I think she is about 67 now and a few years ago had heart problems which may have slowed down her career.

If you like lyrics with an empowered woman's twist, you may want to listen to a little K. T. Oslin.

Hi GG, I do not know her.
.................................................

The play Always...Patsy Cline has a tiny cast. A woman who tells the story and another woman to play Patsy Cline. Of course, they need someone with a phenomenal voice for that part. But they're out there. Maybe not quite. But almost. And there is a little backup band.

Speaking of theater, there is another play with a very small cast that would be a perfect choice for an audience in TV. That play is Sylvia. Sylvia is the name of the dog who is the star of the show. But the dog is played by a woman. (I think Sarah Jessica Parker played the part a long time ago, might have been off-Broadway.)

Anyway, the dog comes to live with a couple and soon becomes the light of the husband's life. The play is funny and touching and has so many true things in it for dog lovers.

The dog is a stray and so at the beginning, the actress playing the dog is dressed in ragged, dirty clothes. But once she is adopted, she goes to the groomer and she gets to wear a snazzy outfit for the rest of the play.

If you are a dog lover and you ever get the chance to see Sylvia, please do not miss it. You will laugh. You will cry. You will laugh and cry at the same time. And you will think it is about your very own dog.

In the productions I have seen, they show a picture of a real dog at the end of the show. That part disappointed me because the dog did not look like Annie. In my mind Sylvia was Annie.

(But there is no country music in the play Sylvia. Hey. We don't care. This is Girl Talk and we can talk about whatever we want to.)

I did see Elvis in Binghamton in June of 1977. He died that August, so I'm so glad I stayed OVERNIGHT in the arena to get the tickets that went on sale the next morning. He was fantastic. That was toward his end, when he was very overweight but once he started singing, you didn't even notice. My only regret is that I didn't take my daughter who was only 11 at the time. I didn't think she was serious that she wanted to go ( In fact I don't remember that she asked to go). However, she reminds me once in awhile about how I didn't take her and then he died! She is still an "Oldies fan", so now I wish I had taken her. Does anyone else have adult children who love to bring stuff like that up? They also like to tell you all the stuff they did that you never found out about! We actually have a great relationship.

Mine, too. Boomette has never let me live down the fact that I would not let her have a Barbie Doll. I thought Barbie Dolls sent the wrong message to little girls. (It was the 70's) She said that she secretly played with Barbie Dolls when she was at her friends' houses. I was, it seems, such a bad mother because of this Barbie Doll thing that I finally gave in and gave her one when she graduated from college. Boomette is now a slave to fashion. (sigh)

Another thing that Boomette torments me over is the cow pitcher. You know those cow pitchers, or I guess more correctly called creamers. You know what I mean. They are white and you pour milk or cream into them and then it comes out the cow's mouth when it's poured out. Exquisitely tacky things. I think I bought it at Stuckey's.

Anyway, the little white cow pitcher/creamer held just enough milk for Boomette's cereal when she was little. So I could pour out the cereal the night before. Cover the bowl with something so the cereal did not get stale. Pour the right amount of milk into the cow pitcher. Put it into the refrigerator. And Voil! You got it. The kid could fix her own cereal on Saturday mornings while she watched cartoons and I snoozed a little. (Boomette was a responsible little girl. Never played with matches or anything like that.)

OK! Just say it. Just whisper it behind my back. I know. You are saying, "Boomer was such a bad, bad mother. tsk. tsk."

And you will never guess what I gave Boomette as a gift just a few years ago. You're right. A cow pitcher.

And she uses it. She puts it on the table for company. And then she tells them the story of her terrible childhood when she had to make her own cereal while her mommy slept in during Saturday morning cartoons.

OMG Boomer,

We must have been sisters in another life. I did the same thing with Courtney (the milk and cereal). We had a little jug in lieu of the cow pitcher. BTW I LOVE the cow pitchers. I bought my Mother-in-law a kitty cat version for Christmas lst year and she adoreds it.

I did allow Barbie. She is also a slave to fashion. So Barbie deprivation is not necessarily causative. I think she is a bit younger than Boomette - - she is an early 80s baby.

Try this. I caused a lot of problems (so mine say) because I bent over backwards. (It was a case of me being raised without a mother and I tried to do it up brown when it was my turn.) Now I am told that I overdid it and they wished that someone elses Mom had been the room mother and the Brownie leader and that I would never let them pour ANYTHING.....cough....until they went to college and I KNOW they learned to pour there.

Ain't none of us can be perfect Mothers. JUST WAIT, I say. Their kids will tell them the same. (or worse)

Dillywho, I, too, love Erma Bombeck's writing.

Erma Bombeck was a fellow Buckeye and I once had the privilege of hearing her speak. I lived in Dayton soon after she had made her transition from the little local community paper to the Dayton paper.

She started out writing for $3.00 a column for the little community paper. (She lived in Centerville, a Dayton suburb. Phil Donahue lived there, too. How weird is that? -- I digress.) Anyway, she said that one of her first columns there had to do with her husband's idea of Christmas lights being to change the porch light's bulb to a colored one. I guess she went on a bit about his lack of Christmas decorating spirit and tendency toward being cheap.

When her husband saw her column she said that he asked her how she could exploit his foibles in the newspaper.

To which Erma answered, "But they gave me $3.00."

And her husband said, "Go for it."

Another of her titles that can sum up how motherhood can feel sometimes is "I Lost Everything in the Post-Natal Depression."

What a wonderful wit she was. She would have been 82 now.

I lifted these quotes from Wikipedia, even though I know that Wikipedia is not really a true reference source where the info is checked. But I'm sure all of these are Erma's. I thought you girls might like them:

"Insanity is hereditary. You can catch it from your kids."

"My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first one being hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint."

"There's nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child."

"If a man watches three football games in a row, he should be declared legally dead."

"The only reason I would take up jogging is so I could hear heavy breathing again."

"Laughter rises out of tragedy, when you need it the most, and rewards you for your courage."

"Dreams have only one owner at a time. That's why dreamers are lonely."

"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me."

"In general, my children refused to eat anything that hadn't danced on TV."

"When humor goes, there goes civilization."

"Seize the moment. Think of all those women on the 'Titanic' who waved off the dessert cart."

"Never loan your car to anyone to whom you've given birth."

"The grass is always greener over the septic tank."

"A child needs your love most when he deserves it least."

"There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt."

....... (and now I think I will go peruse the bookshelf and see if I can find one of my old Erma Bombeck books. Thanks for the memories, Dillywho.)

Just now, when I should have been doing something useful, I got caught up in reading stuff online. (That never happens to any of you does it?)

And I came across this article from Newsweek. It takes a little while to read it. It's a long one. But I found it interesting. It hits Oprah's effect pretty hard. Not too kind. It covers how she has covered hormones and one-hour facelifts and sending energy out into the universe and all that medical and quasi-medical stuff of which the Oprah Hour is so often made. (I still like to watch her sometimes though.)

Interesting reading I thought. So I am passing it along here in the "Girl Talk" thread, in case any of you are goofing off and reading stuff online when you should be cooking an elaborate supper or making a dress out of the draperies or whatever.

We subscribe to Newsweek. I saw the cover - but have not read the article. I have to confess that my first thought was how beautiful she looked - so maybe there is truth to her "remedies."

BTW you are far from the only one who gets distracted online. I behave better in the nice weather, but in the winter I hunker down with hot tea, red wine, a good book and a laptop to snuggle with.

Thank goodness I am in TV!

I read a summary of that article about Oprah in the local newspaper and found it extremely interesting. There are many people that think if they see something on Oprah that it is gospel. I have been guilty myself of running to the store for the newest "Oprah recommended" product.

Supposedly Suzanne Sommers is a close friend of Oprah and SS scorns the medical profession. SS gets hormone injections in her vagina daily (ouch) plus taking hundred of vitamin pills every day. Wowser. And the article said Oprah was planning to do the same thing.

Conn .. I hope you enjoy Timmy's pedicures. He gives a lovely leg massage. I don't use him for my nails, though, I go to Nails and Beyond for my Pink and Whites.

Barefoot,

Suzanne Sommers is over the top I would say. I think she is 62. But lots of 62 year-old women look just fine without all that stuff she does. Hormones are one thing. Been around for years. In and out of controversy. But all that extreme she goes to. Yikes!!

The article also talks about Dr. Chistiane Northrop. I actually like her books. But I did not know until I read this article that she has some kind of tarot cards for diagnosis. Her own it says, but still. Geez. That would freak me out a little if the doc whipped out tarot cards. Maybe it will catch on though. I wonder if my insurance would cover that.

And I wonder if Oprah will do a show about the article. Or maybe she will just buy Newsweek and fire the writer.

What do you call it?

My sister and I sometimes laughingly call it “watching Matlock.” (I guess by now some of you know me well enough to figure that a little story will ensue.)

Here goes:

Picture it. Cincinnati. City of the Reserved. The Polite. The Proper. The town where people do not talk about their sex lives………..

Anyway, my sister and I were out and about one day when we decided to pay our parents a surprise visit. (We were probably somewhere in our 40’s at the time which would have put our parents at late 60’s, early 70’s.) We thought they would be so happy to see their lovely daughters, even though unannounced. So off we went to bring them such joy, or so we thought.

Well, when we arrived at their house, we knocked on the door. And we knocked. And we knocked some more. Nobody answered.

So we went around to the garage where I jumped up high so I could see in the garage window. And……

OH NO! OH MY! The Oldsmobile WAS THERE!!!! OH MY! OH! NO! WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO OUR POOR “ELDERLY” SWEET PARENTS???????

My sister and I knew not what to do. And, of course, according to our family tradition, we let imagination run wild……

HAD OUR DEAR PARENTS BEEN KIDNAPPED BY A GERITOL SALESMAN WHO WOULD FORCE THEM TO POSE FOR ADS?!!

OR HAD AN AMBULANCE COME AND TAKEN THEM AWAY??!!!!

OR HAD THEY FALLEN AND COULD NOT GET UP??!!!

OH MY! OH NO!!!!

This was in the days before cell phones so we could not call in an APB. Whatever would we do?!!

As we wrung our hands and walked back to the front of the house, our mother opened the door. She was wearing the fuzzy robe that my sister had bought her for Christmas. For goodness sake! Why was she wearing her robe? It was AFTERNOON!!!! WAS SHE SICK???? OH NO!! OH MY!!!! OUR POOR DEAR “ELDERLY” MOTHER!!!!!

And in her very sweetest motherly voice, she said to us, “What in the :cus::cus::cus: are you two doing?! Out here running around like chickens with your heads cut off???”

And we sighed in unison, a great sigh of relief. And I asked, “What happened? Are you and Dad OK? We pounded and pounded on the door. And we looked for the Oldsmobile in the garage. And then we saw it and we were scared? What happened? Why didn’t you answer the door???"

And our dear, sweet, “elderly” mother, standing there in her robe, in the AFTERNOON, said, “Ohhhh, we did not hear you. We were, uh, watching Matlock.”

Watching Matlock! Oh, Boomer - what a great story! :a040:

But confess... did your sister's imagination run wild as well???? I am trying to conceptualize the world with a sister-of-Boomer with the same vivid imagination and corresponding flights of fancy.

Several years after my mom passed away, my dad remarried. A couple of weeks before the wedding we went out for me to help him pick out a wedding gift for his new bride. Somehow the conversation was steered by him to a reverse version of "the talk" - you know the one in theory you have with your daughter about what to expect on her wedding night. My father had never come close to mentioning nookie to me in any way shape or form. Picture Massachusetts - the state of Puritans and such. Now he was asking me (his engaged but unmarried daughter) for advice! EEEEEKKKKKK!!!! And then followed up with how he didn't think "it" would be that important in this marriage - and basically told me he was out of practice (my mom had been ill for years) and that his bride-to-be wasn't that interested.

Fast forward a few months. I stopped by (like Boomer, unannounced and with my new step-sister). The cars were parked out front and a light was on upstairs but no one answered the door - even though you could hear some noise inside. My dad would have been in his early to mid 60s at the time. We kind of guessed what might have been going on and laughed at (with apologizes to S.R. Vaughan) "if the house is a rockin, don't you come a knockin."

The next day I was over there for lunch and found a clipping pf an Ann Landers column under some magazines I was moving to set the table. The headline was to the effect of "Seniors Need Sex, Too."

I guess Ann's advice prompted them to "Watch Matlock."

Oh Boomer and Kate, those are great stories. And I haven't heard "it" called nookie for a long, long time. We used to call sex during the day "a nooner" or "afternoon delight". My girlfriend always refers to it as "getting an oil change".

Think of your 10 favorite movies of all time - write them down, and put the list away for a day or two. Take out the list and make sure these are you faves - watch two a day for the next 5 days. (that's one week gone)

Think of a favorite series of books... Little House, Harry Potter, Martha Grimes' Richard Jury mysteries. Start with the first one and reread as many as you can in order (it's like having lunch with old friends). You can start the week you are watching the movies. This can take up 2 or more weeks.

Sadly, we lost Farrah Fawcett to cancer at age 62. It is so sad to see cancer claim another young woman. And Michael Jackson also died at age 50. A long life isn't promised to anyone. I'm thinking of Elizabeth Taylor today. She was such a wonderful friend to Michael Jackson, she will be grieving.

On a more cheerful note, Sarah Jessica Parker brought her surrogate twins home from hospital today. And the cycle of life continues.

Yes Bare, it was a very sad day indeed. I'm glad I was flipping channels last night...I missed the first 10 minutes but they had the Documentary Farrah and Ryan did. It was so sad, she is one heck of a courageous woman. I knew they did it, but didnt realize it would be aired so soon. Did you see it?

Michael Jackson's death is also so very sad. I was thinking of Elizabeth Taylor too. I do know she made it to the hospital immediately. I think she was called before they even left the house to take him to the hospital. I was worried about her also, yesterday afternoon I had heard that she collapsed when she heard he passed. Hoping she is alright since I havnt heard anything since.

Great news for Sarah Jessica Parker!!!

There is something on the board today that all us girls just have to see. Fumar posted in "Just for Fun" something that he titled "How's Your Memory?"

The link is wonderful. Stuff from the 50's and 60's. Great fun.

There is one part that you absolutely must see.

Scroll through the link until you come to "The Good Wife's Guide." Oh my! The list is really something. And be sure not to miss the shoes that the woman is wearing while she is cooking dinner. And do you believe that part about never complain if he is late or even if he stays out all night???? (That was a wishlist written by a man I bet.)

bare....I've given up eating red meat (almost 30 years ago) but really don't miss it.

One of my favorite meat dishes (well, mostly veggies) is turkey chili ; ground turkey meat, 3 different kinds of canned beans, grated carrots, chopped celery, lots of garlic, onions, spices, tomatoes, marinara sauce.... almost anything.

I also eat lots of tuna salad, tuna sandwiches, fish, chicken-apple sausages, egg-white-veggie omelets :icon_hungry:

I made turkey chili recently, I didnt tell my son to see if he could tell and he was raving about how good it was....I kept giggling. Finally I told him, and we both agreed it was better than the beef chili. Very good...I definitley recommend you try it.
And...since that was a hit, I made turkey meat balls, altho I couldnt trick him since you could tell by the color of them hehe...but they were delicious as well!! Very moist!

Believe it or not I have made turkey chili also, and it is outstanding. ( I actually do cook at times!)

I dont feel quite as bad about eating turkey because Hubs raised them at one point and every time I walked out of my house, they would run down the driveway and attack me. I felt like a prisoner in my own home!

However I am starting to feel badly about eating chicken. I saw a chicken on television playing "twinkle twinlkle little star " on the piano with his beak, I never realized how trainable and smart they are!

IG,

My! My! That is quite a dress. I like the lines of it. Good sleeve length. Good skirt. The fabric looks too shiny though, on my computer anyway. But, for a uniform???? That dcolletage is definitely saying, "Coffee, tea, or me?" Do you think the airline is setting them up to work for tips?

When I saw your post, it reminded me of a lunchtime conversation at work a few years ago. A woman that I worked with, a young mom, had just returned from Disneyworld with her husband and little boys. She had hunted down the best price for airline tickets. She ended up flying "Hooters Air." Well, the rest of us had never heard of this airline. She said it was cheap. But she also said that there was only one flight attendant dressed in Hooters garb. And then she said that she actually felt sorry for her, running around the plane in her Hooters ensemb. Of course, the rest of us women, all well seasoned, collapsed in a heap of laughter. And then we had a little talk with our young friend, about choices, and about who not to worry about.

Now, on to a message for Barefoot....

Hi Barefoot,

I see that you are working on being a vegetarian. I am not a vegetarian. Just gotta bare my fangs once in a while. But it has to be for really good red meat. I do try to limit it.

One of the things that I have found works for lunch or whenever is hummus. I don't make it, but I have recently found a brand that I really like. Sabra. I have tried only the classic hummus so far, but they have lots of different kinds. I put it on Wasa Crispbread.

A couple of weeks ago I had a meeting for my class reunion committee and I served it along with other light fare. (Buncha women. You know the drill. Wine was flowing.) I used Stacy's pita chips with the hummus then. But those things cost 10 million dollars a bag. And I actually like the Wasa bread better. I have tried other hummus and not been all that excited about it. But this stuff, I like a lot. And it will get you through a while without getting hungry.

Here is the link to the company that makes it.

Hi PR, thanks, maybe I will have to check at Costco or somewhere like that here.

Well, I guess those Stacy's pita chips I was talking about were not really 10 million dollars a bag.......actually........about $7.00 as I recall.

I was running around Kroger in Cincinnati looking for them because somebody had told me that they were great with hummus. Finally found them in the deli department. The woman who was helping me look for them said, "You are not going to believe how expensive these things are."

Every once in a while, I get a little sticker shock going on. I will look at a price in a grocery store and think, "You have got to be kidding me."

Yet somehow, I can always manage to pay upward of 4 bucks for just a pint of Graeter's chocolate chip ice cream and not bat an eye. And, you know, come to think of it, I can at least share a bag of pita chips. Go figure.

With a Turkish son-in-law we eat a lot of hummus. We love the Sabra pine nut version (and we get it in the BIG tub at Costco). Stacy's chips can be bought for much less there, too. Warning - LARGE bag.

We like to use the pocketless pita they also sell at Costco. We heat it up in a panini press - but you can warm it in a toaster or toaster oven - then just cut it into wedges.

When it gets a little low in the tub, I like to sprinkle a bit of Turkish red pepper on top. We just a bunch from the fam in Istanbul - so am happy to share if any of you would like any. Bare, I will save some until Autumn - don' think it would clear customs.

Farts!

Long story.

Today in that thread about age, TH brought up farts. Yep. Farts. It was most certainly not on topic, and he was even wearing a tuxedo at the time, but alas he was talking about farts. I suspect that Tony put him up to it, but we will never know for sure because all men love to talk about farts and laugh about farts. All of them.

We just returned from a family vacation. Mr. Boomer and my sister's husband one evening steered the conversation to their joyous memories of the farting they did when they were on a trip a few years ago with a couple of other guys. What do they remember about their trip? The farting of course.

One time I asked Mr. Boomer to pick up a birthday card for said brother-in-law. I should have known to get it myself because Mr. B. found a card about elephant farts. And my BIL liked it, of course. I would never give my sister a card about farts. I wonder if those musical cards that they have now have come up with one that just makes farting noises. Men would love it. Probably with the wonders of technology, they could even find a way to sing Happy Birthday in fart sounds. It would no doubt be a bestseller. (Sigh) --uh oh, maybe I had better patent that idea.

Well, when TH mentioned that word, I had just looked in and there I saw it. And once again I was inspired to give more thought to trying to get funding so that there can be a study to prove my theory that finding farts funny is attached to the Y chromosome somehow.

Like I said in the other thread, I just found out that a wonderful piece of pottery that I bought while on vacation is from a pottery studio that has a name that is a euphemism for farts.

Actually tonight I took a picture of my new pottery so I can show it to you. And I will show you the pottery mark, too. What planet do I live on anyway? I go out into the world. Go to a gallery. Find the perfect piece of pottery for my copper coffee table. And then find out that the potters' studio name is a euphemism for farts!

So anyway, I am working on the pictures. I do not know how to post them so it might be a couple of days before they show up here. I will put them in this thread. I still like the pottery. And I have given it a place of honor. I just bet a man named the pottery studio.

Dillywho stopped by the other thread and she is very interested in the study, too. I told her over there in that thread to meet me over here and I would bring her up to speed on this. And we can never get into trouble for going off topic in Girl Talk and we might have over there.

So now I am going to do something here that is probably against some kind of protocol or something, dragging threads around to put them in Girl Talk. I hope you will please forgive me if I am being tacky. And redundant. I think some of you might have seen this thread from last fall. Just ignore it if that is the case. But I told Dilly that I would meet her here and fill her in. This thread was fun and so here is the rerun. Lots of the girls agreed with me on this one.

https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18340

Oh how I dream of winning the Nobel Prize someday for proving that men are genetically coded somehow to think that farts are hilarious and make such a scintillating topic of conversation. I know that I, as a woman, most certainly never talk about farts.

Hi girls,

I am an idiot.

I really am going to show you a picture of the pottery I bought from the studio with the name that I know a man must have given it. But even though I have the pictures now, I cannot seem to get them here. They keep coming out in pieces. Do you know what I mean? A window pane. A chair arm. A few square inches of a table top. This is what happens to me every time I try to send pictures. When I try to send pictures of people, they end up looking like a Picasso with an eye here or there. Or like I had dismembered the person whose picture I took.

Of course, if my learning curve where directions are concerned could be perhaps even slightly longer than that of a gnat, maybe I could figure it out. When I try to read directions, I always feel like my head is being pinched in a vise. I know it's bad to be this way.

I am going to give up for tonight. It is Garbage Eve and I have to go investigate the refrigerator and see if there is anything on its last legs in there.

But someday I will get those pictures in here. I promise.

Goodnight.

Hi Whalen,

I just flung the garbage in Mr. Boomer's direction so he could schlep it to the curb and then I took one more look in here and saw your question. And.... Well, I guess you will just have to wait and see.

Since it is getting so close to midnight, I feel like doing one of those shameless confessions.

Remember the last time you got hit on. Well, it has been a while for me, but today I got hit on. Yep. I sure did.

I went to my water aerobics class and I was a little bit late. Probably because I was on here this morning babbling away while I was having my Cheerios.

Anyway, when I got to the pool, the class had already started, but there were two men I had never seen before standing there. One on the pool steps and one already in the water. And I overheard what they were talking about.

"Hey, Frank," said the guy in the water, "this water is damned cold this morning. I think I'm about to turn into a soprano."

"Yeah, you're right. Damned cold," said Frank, who was blocking my way while gingerly working his way into the pool.

So I smiled at them and said to Frank, "Would you like for me to push you in?"

And the guy in the water said, "Aw, you better not push him, he will have a heart attack."

And then that dear man Frank said, "Well, if I get this with the heart attack, I will take about twelve heart attacks." And then Frank graciously extended his hand and led me into the pool.

Now girls, I have to tell you that everything is relative. I am no spring chicken and I have those legs we talk about sometimes and I must say it was a long carbohydrate-filled winter. I am being realistic here. I know my limitations. But still, it counts. I got hit on. Well, sort of. At least I got flirted with anyway.

Everything is relative.

That dear, sweet, gracious man Frank, who bestowed upon me these pathetic bragging rights, had to be well upward of 80.

And now, goodnight again.

Boomer, I'm a brand new wife (last Friday) and a brand new villager (last Sunday). One thing I told my new husband, who loves the neighborhood pool, is that I don't go out in public in a swimsuit. He said, "It's different down here.
Try it once and I won't bug you anymore. So yesterday, I trucked down to the 50% off swimsuit sale at Belk's and took the plunge ( pun intended) I also bought a cute cover up that I didn't plan to take off. When we got to the pool, Carl introduced me to his friends and in 10 minutes I was in the pool talking with the ladies, using their noodle floats and having a great time! Carl was right. It's different down here. I love it!

Congratulatiions Leland Jane .. sounds as if you have nothing but blue skies and fun ahead of you. I'd love to hear the romantic story about how you met your new husband and decided to move to TV.

It sure is different in The Bubble. I love the fact that everyone is in their golden years and having fun, rather than obsessing about losing weight or looking like a size 4.

Hi Girls,

I realize that I have been going on and on a bit in this thread lately about how I am completely convinced that finding farts funny is attached to the Y chromosome. I am forever hopeful that someday I will be able to obtain funding, maybe just a small private grant, so that I can conduct a study, and, at last, prove my theory to the whole world. Like I told you, I dream about the Nobel Prize. Or whatever prize they give for science stuff. I have even been working on my acceptance speech.

And then I told you about how on my vacation I found the loveliest piece of pottery to put on my coffee table that is in this very room with me. My desk is at the other end of the room. I have finally moved my computer out of the kitchen.

I bought this pottery at a gallery. Pottery studios have interesting names sometimes. And I asked about the name of this one. And the gallery owner told me that she had just found out from another customer what the name means.

The name is "Barking Spider Pottery."

Well, I had never heard of this barking spider thing. I guess when there is no dog around to blame, a barking spider can be the excuse.

You know, I don't know for sure, but I would bet that a man came up with that name for the studio. Well, actually, I feel like I do know for sure. Would a woman name a pottery studio after farts?

I guess I could cut the artist a little slack. Maybe the studio is really named after that tarantula native to Australia. Perhaps the potter is just a fan of arachnids. But that tarantula makes some kind of noise. Convenient to blame audible flatulence on. If you are in Australia I guess.

I will never know the answer to how this name came to be attached to this pottery I loved at first sight. But I will just bet that somewhere there is a woman who was trying to talk a man out of naming the studio "Artsy Fartsy Pottery" and so she compromised.

So here are the pictures. A place of honor. Fart name and all. I am showing you the mark. I loved the colors. And they had other pieces that I liked, too. I might end up with a couple more pieces of pottery from that studio that I think might have been named after farts. Figures.

The pottery (and the room) are beautiful. I have never heard that spider term before - but I'll bet you are spot on about the "artsy fartsy" theory. And we did have a dog we used to blame flatulence on - of course sometimes it really was her. We called her "Gassie Cassie." Cassie was a golden retriever.

I think maybe you might wish to expand the scope of your study. It is related (in a way) to farts. When I started my first job after college, we had a cart that stopped at each mail station for us to get coffee or tea in the morning. About 30 minutes after the cart departed, I was amazed to see all the men (Wall Street Journals tucked under their arms) head to the Men's Room. Why is it, that men need to have a good sit down with a periodical before they are capable of producing a (to use a "guy" term) dump?

Hi Kate, it is such a good thing that we women are far too genteel to ever talk about farts.

And about those dogs, a vet once told me that retriever types are especially prone to being gassy. I had a dog who was that way. Her mama was a Golden although my dog Mandy was solid black. One of the most memorable dogs of my life.

Now that I have developed a tenuous relationship with Photobucket, maybe I will post a picture sometime of my dog I have now. Annie. Named that because she was an orphan who showed up at the door of our screened porch at our last house. She just looked in that screen door. Right at me.

I was wallowing around in a chaise lounge reading a book when her little face appeared. She was only a few months old. Still had some baby teeth so the vet knew approximate age. That was more than 15 years ago. She is a beauty. Aren't they all. Her breed? I call her breed "Nature's Finest Genetic Engineering."

Hey, Whalen, I just saw that New York thing. I really need to go there again. It has been too many years. I always wanted to go sometime and just be a theater glutton. Go from one play to the next. Fellow boomer Dolly Parton now has "9 to 5" there as a musical I see. Talk about a woman's show huh. I still remember that movie and I still laugh about it. In fact, I should track it down on DVD.

I give Dolly a lot of credit. I think she is a genius.

One of my favorite things I ever heard her say was when she was still carrying weight. Before she was so tiny like she is now. You know how there is always that whole thing about deep-seated reasons for overeating. Rotten childhood. Bad relationships. All the stuff we always hear.

Dolly had commented about how she dressed. Said she realized that her clothes made her look like she was trying to stuff 10 pounds of potatoes into a 5 pound sack.

And then Dolly said, "I don't eat too much because my mama smacked me. I eat too much because I am a damned hawg."

I just love it when a woman shoots straight.

Kate,
I really laughed out loud.
Worked with an attorney a while back and every morning about 10am he would leave his office, and as he walked dorn the hall he would smack his copy of the WSJ against the side of knee to give all fair warning:
Jim's on his way to the John.

Kate & Whalen,

I will just bet that you two know as well as I do exactly where to place something in your house when you have been trying and trying to get the man in your life to read it.

You know, do you think we should be sure to remember these discussions for when we are invited to Buckingham Palace?

Boomer,
Saw your post on another thread about golf etiquette and your lack of prowess on the course.
Well as to etiquette I know nothing but as to ability take heart.
I live across the street from the 9th hole of Kilimanjaro, an exexutive course, and let me tell you after watching some of the play there it has encouraged me, me the Brooklyn girl, to take lessons. These golfers are sooo bad, Kate no offence apparently you are a real golfer, I figure if they can play I'll give it a try.

Hey Whalen,

I have got to stop logging on here after 11. I end up seeing something and I pick up on it and next thing you know it is midnight or even later. If I am not careful, I could end up turning my diurnal self into a nocturnal type. Then who knows what I could end up posting in the wee hours and then I would have to be banned.........Ohhhhhhhh, somebody, pleeeeeeeeese.

About those golf lessons. Me, too. I am awful. But there is something about the infernal game that attracts me. I think it is the pretty places. And the lunch and drinks after. Oh who am I kidding. I know for sure it is the pretty places and the lunch and drinks after.

I am just going to have to accept who I am at this point in life. I used to whine around here all the time about how even my very best friend in high school would never pick me for her team in gym class. There I would be. Left standing on that :cus: line in the gym. Standing there. All alone. Wearing that ugly gymsuit. Standing there. Just like the cheese in "The Farmer in the Dell." (Whoops. I digress. Or was that a flashback?) Anyway, we are still friends, but I do bring up the issue from time to time. In fact, I made her take golf lessons with me. HAH! Golf -- the great leveler.

I always have big plans though. I can pretend that someday I will be respectable at golf. But who am I kidding. Like just this week I decided it was back to the virtuous dinners around this place. I fixed salmon twice. But each time I got out the Hellmann's Real Mayo, spooned out a couple of big dollops into a bowl, added some of that creamy horseradish and some fresh dill. Now, I know that smearing that glorious Hellmann's concoction all over that fish may have canceled out my good intentions. But hey. I think I will count it as a wash. I have to keep up the good attitude. Just like with golf.

Actually, Boomer, that is a great idea. I'm trying to eat fish but I don't like the taste. :icon_hungry: It never occured to me to smear it with Hellmans. May not be as healthy, but it sounds like a wining combination!

Whalen,

No offense taken - but Kilimanjaro is not an executive. It is one of the 3 courses that make up the Havana Championship course. And Kilimanjaro is the toughest of the 3. That 9th hole is REALLLLLLLYYYYYYY intimidating - very little room for error.

I would love to play with you when you get started - we would have a great time.

OK, girls, change of topic!
I'm here now and I got up this morning needing a haircut. Yesterday seemed ok but it happened overnight! Does that ever happen to anybody else?
Anyway, I need a good hairdresser fast. I'll also need color and hilites soon, so I'd like to get established with one good person. Any suggestions?

Yes, the haircut thing is weird when it happens overnight. I've noticed the same thing about pedicures and fills for my nails.

LLJ, I have used several beauticians in TV, but I'm still looking for that one person that can rock my world. I'll be interested to hear the suggestions.

Bare,

your hair is absolutely beautiful. You dont know frustration until you have naturally frizzy hair like mine!:yuck: No amount of the most expensive conditioners or shampoos make any difference at all! So when you find that special beautician, please please let me know. In the meantime Ill suffer in silence and keep a paper bag over my head!

Nonie,

Shame on you - you look beautiful.

Ladies,

I go to Helen at Tuscany in LSL. By far not the cheapest option, but I have hard to cut hair and need color - so I am sold. My hair is thick and curly, my friend Nancy's is straighter and fine - and she does a fabulous job with both of us.

Nonie always looks terrific! But for some unexplained reason, she doesn't like her hair. Oh well, we all have body bits we'd like to shed I'm sure.

Kate, I thought that Helen at Tuscany wasn't accepting new clients. Am I wrong about that?

Nonie, I am envious of your thick head of hair! Mine has always been baby fine and I hate it.:( Lies flat on my head with no body whatsoever.

I can relate to the frizz though. I have noticed lately that the few hairs I do have are now starting to frizz too...What's up with that!?! Oh well, a little frizz might give my hair some body. :1rotfl:

Thats so nice of you all but I kid you not, It is just a thin mass of frizz now. That avatar was 9 years ago when there was a little bit of thickness.Thats why I wear it pulled up all the time.

Thankyou for the suggestion of Helen at Tuscany's, I may give her a shot next time Im down.

Hi LELANDJANE. I don't know about hairdressers in TV, but I just wanted to say that yes, it does happen overnight. And it always seems like it happens when you were planning to go somewhere the next day where you wanted your hair to look decent and then you wake up with the real roots showing and with your hair about an inch or two longer than when you went to bed. I do not get it either.

Barefoot, I know what you mean about fish. I love crab and shrimp and grouper is OK. Salmon for a little bit. But I cannot say there is any regular fish that truly floats my boat. And so I slather those filets with something like that Hellmann's and creamy horseradish and fresh dill thing. You can also leave out the fresh dill and just add a little ketchup to the Hellmann's and the horseradish stuff. That comes out kind of like that sauce they served with the bloomin' onion in some restaurant -- I cannot remember which one right now. It has been a while since I have had a bloomin' onion. That sauce is really good on crabcakes.

Today I got a little too carried away with my virtuous eating mode and tried to make a recipe that I saw in "Real Simple" magazine. It was for vegeburgers. It was one of the most disgusting things I have ever made. The basic ingredient was lentils and then it had couscous and some onion and carrots and an egg and oh I do not know why I am even talking about it. It was gross. Lentils are weird and their texture is weird. Or at least I think so. They had to go through the food processor which made them even weirder. It was a lot of work and Annie my dog got most of mine.

When I want to lay off meat for a couple of days, I often make beans and brown rice. I do not bother with the routine with the dried beans. I just use cans of beans, usually red ones. And then I top them with sour cream and chopped green onions. Mr. B. hits them hard with a hot sauce from his collection. I cannot do hot sauce.

Well, here I am, going on and on, trying to be such a Helpful Henrietta, acting like I know what I am talking about, when you all probably can tell that I really wolf down cheeseburgers whenever I get the chance.

But back to that sour cream for the beans and rice. I prefer Daisy brand sour cream. And my mayo has to be Hellmann's. I figure if I am going to go off the deep end, I might as well do it the way I want to.

Anyway, Barefoot, just a spoonful of Hellmann's helps the fish go down -- in the most delightful waaaaaay. (You have to sing that last part.)

Ms Boomer

What do you expect from a magazine that doesn't know an adverb from an adjective???:highfive:

On the other hand I LOVE lentils. Jim makes the most wonderful Red Lentil soup - the Turkish thing again. I get a new son-in-law and a whole new world of foods....

k

PS - Hate Mayo - may be the only high calorie food I dislike... but I have a lot of friends who feel the way you and Bare do about fish, and would probably like your horesradish concoction... kind of like an upgraded tartar sauce...

Boomer

Kate, I have had lentil soup that is good. But promise me that you will never, ever, ever put a bunch of canned lentils into a food processor, turn them into some kind of hideous mush, add a few ingredients, and then make the mess into patties, and put them on hamburger buns and try to pretend that you are eating something that is good. All the mayo in the refrigerator could not save those things. Annie was not too thrilled either. You are right. I should have known.

And Hi, Bettiboop, I saw what you said about not liking how your hair looks. I don't know if you have tried color, but sometimes a good colorist can really help. Especially with highlights that add dimension. There are cutting techniques that good hairdressers know that can add volume to fine hair. And there are also the thickening sprays. Bumble and Bumble makes a really good one. There are lots of great products out there now that add lift. Fine hair is not such a bad thing. The hair may be fine but there can be lots of them. It is just that the hair is usually very soft when it is fine and it wants to lay flat.

I always thought my hair looked kind of flat until I found the right hairdresser. Sometimes she uses these weird scissors that have teeth and look like she is about to cut off all my hair. But the teeth are varying lengths and so you end up with all sorts of layers that kind of stack up. She comes at me with a razor sometimes, too. -- And sometimes she is even trying to cut my hair with it. ;)

The hair thing can become such an issue for us women. In fact I think it was the first topic of discussion when the "Girl Talk" thread started over a year ago. It always comes up eventually when women talk. We are always in search of the perfect hair and we never seem to like our own. Oh well.

But Bettiboop, you are probably just being too hard on yourself. Your hair looks so cute in your avatar picture. (btw, Bettiboop is one of my favorite characters)
