I bit the bullet and did the upgrade yesterday from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It went pretty well.
But - - on some things, the display on my monitor doesn't seem as crisp and some things are sized just a little differently. A CAD program warned about an outdated graphics driver. I checked the drivers for the display adapter and the monitor and when I try to update, both say they have the best software installed. I would normally look for the old driver and install it, but I'm afraid if the display stops working, you can't talk with the computer at all to put the right one back in. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks. |

Next step I would take would be to go to the computer manufacturer's website support page (Drivers and Downloads or similar) and see if they have an updated driver for your particular computer model.
If you retry your old driver as you say you'd like to, I would first read the link below on getting into safe mode just in case you loose your screen. You should be alright though. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...c-in-safe-mode Don't forget to also google your problem for info. Good luck! |

I believe only your computer was checked for the best driver. Sometimes you need to do a seperate search for the driver at the graphics card website.

That has always been a problem when upgrading to a new version of Windows, or any operating system for that matter. Many things will not have drivers, or the drivers for the new version of windows is not as good as the older version. The newer your hardware, the better the chances of getting a decent driver for it. This a big pain point with printers. That's why it is always good to check to see if hardware you have (especially if it is old) will work well in the newer operating system.
As HiHoSteveO pointed out, your best chances are go go to the manufacture website, and check for a better driver. There simply may not be a better driver available, and you might be better off going back to windows 7. Wayne Sallee Wayne@WayneSallee.com Wayne Sallee . Com |

I have a Dell Inspirion. After upgrading to Win 10 I lost my CD/DVD drive. I checked on line and this problem seemed to be very prevalent. I tried all the fixes suggested on line with no success. I took the poster above advice and checked Dell's site for upgrades. There were two one of which was a BIOS update. Did both and voila the drive returned.

If you have an LCD monitor (as opposed to an older CRT), the first thing I'd check is that the resolution is set to the native resolution of the monitor (in Settings->System->Display->Advanced display settings). If you run an LCD at other than its native resolution you get pretty much what you describe (a bit fuzzy, things sized wrong, etc.). Beyond that, it does sound like Windows couldn't find a driver for your specific display adapter and so, substituted a generic driver. Ignore its claims about it being the best. Its just the best THAT WINDOWS COULD FIND IN ITS DRIVER DATABASE. Definitely look for a more up to date driver from the website of whomever manufactured your display adapter. If this is an off the shelf computer, if you gave the model number we could possibly help you find it.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I followed up by going to HP, and their site offers no drivers for Intel GMA X4500 integrated graphics and refers you to the Intel web site. Intel stopped supporting this chipset and doesn't offer a new Windows 10 driver for it. The computer is 6 years old but has a pretty good 64 bit quad core processor and 8 GB of RAM so the performance is still very good. Maybe I'll try installing the previous Windows 7 graphics driver and see what happens. Thanks again for your help. |

----- There is a generic GMA 500 driver from Intel for 32 bit Windows 7 that has worked for me on netbooks under Windows 10: Download Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows 7* 32 (zip) Unzip it onto a memory stick and plug it in. On the Windows 10 target machine: Right-click on the start icon and choose "Device Manager" Expand "Display Adapters" and right-click on the generic display device Select "Update Driver Software..." Select "->Browse my computer for driver software" Click the [Browse] button; select the folder containing the extracted files Click the [Next] button Wait (it is probably an under-powered netbook, after all). This driver actually worked better on Windows 10 than the OEM driver (Fujitsu) worked on Windows 7. ----- The whole thread is here: GMA 500 is not compatible with Windows 10. Is t... |Intel Communities I'm not aware of any huge changes in the driver model between Windows 7, 8.x and 10, so in quite a few cases if you can't find a Windows 10-specific driver for a particular device, its worth trying an earlier one. I'd go backwards in time when looking for one, i.e. first look for a Windows 8.1 one and if that fails, look for a Windows 8 one and finally a Windows 7 one. -- Bob C P.S. If all else fails and this is a desktop machine with an open PCIE slot, you could also always pick up an inexpensive add-in graphics card. Last edited by rexxfan; 07-13-2016 at 08:35 AM. |
