Default Attic Storage Lifting System

Has anyone installed or know of anyone who has installed a Attic storage lift to assist with getting stuff into your attic from your garage ? If so did you do it yourself or who did you have a contractor do the installation. See link below for one of these products. Thanks for your responses.

Hi Jerseyboy,

Interesting idea, though expensive. I guess you have attic stairs, in addition to the separate opening for the lift, right. Otherwise, how how do you move stuff off the lift so you could lift other stuff into the attic, and how do you get the right stuff back onto the lift for retrieval?

My wife uses me for her attic storage and retrieval system.

I don't think there is enough room in the attic for the lift, etc. That looks to be at least 3 feet tall and with the gears you need at least 4-5 feet to get the swivel room. With the rafters, etc I doubt if you have 4 feet up there. The site needs more specifications before we can assist you.

We find that attic stairs and a plywood flooring is sufficient.

Default cost factor

I was seriously considering it at first, but then compared the cost against the number of times I would really need to use it. But after the initial storage exercise (moving in), the number of times having to go up there just doesn't justify the cost to me. One has to go up there anyway to load and unload the lift. So it's basically the issue of pushig the item up the ladder. For the times I really need help getting something up or down, I'll ask a friend or hire a general handyman to help me. But I keep the boxes and containers as small as possible to assure I can handle the weight. I did however invest in the stronger aluminum ladder stairs, that carries a heavier weight load threshold, considering it's me and the box/container going up or down.

Default Great idea

Jake,
That is great info. I did not know there were aluminum stairs. As a child my Dad had attic stairs and they scared me. I weigh even more now. The only thing I think of is the cost, possibly your life, of a fall from the ladder. As a hospital chaplain I have seen many elderly people die from the complications of a fractured hip.

Default Attic Storage Lifting System

Thanks for the feed back. I know the unit is expensive but the I thought that maybe someone installed something like this to prevent an accident. The idea for the alluminum stairs is a good idea.

I looked up "How to make a block & tackle" on the Internet. Parts about $20.

Cheap. Works.

Default attic lift

The other thing you all might want to keep in mind, is that if you don't have "attic trusses " in the area you are using for storage, be careful how much weight you place up there. You may see ceiling damage, or worse..
