Default Fertilizer?

I am taking possession of our new home in the second week of May. I have lined up the lawn mowing, trimming, weeding and pest maintenance. Now on to fertilization. The current owner has his lawn fertilized monthly by Scotts for about $40/month. That sounded like a lot to me, so I contacted the University of Florida extension service and they said lawn should only be fertilized about every three months.

When I told that to Scotts, they said no....I then suggested every other month and they said they would do it... but no guarantees.

My son, who lives in Orlando does it bi-monthly and said his lawn is always green.

So, I am looking for a recommendation as to fertilization frequency as well as some companies who do this service. I appreciate your help.

I do my own use Scotts Southern Beauty about $26 at Home Depot 10,000 Sp Ft bag. About every 6-8 weeks. In between use a bag of Ironite to keep it green.
Once used Massy, lawn never looked good.....there excuse "you need to water more often" or "check your irrigation system.

I do my own. I purchase Scott's seasonal stuff (Turf Builder) for Zoysia grass at Lowes or Home Depot. I apply once every 3 mos. Water once or twice a week. I mow it myself with a non motorized reel mower. My lawn is green, lush and it cost me about 120 bucks a year plus the water cost.

I was under the impression that the fertilizing companies spread fertilizer February, April, June, August, October, and December and sprayed for insects and weeds January, March, May, July, September, and November. I use Massey and while I don't have may paperwork handy this does come to mind. Also when talking about lawns I believe that it needs to be stated whether it is St. Augustine or Zoysia as maybe that does make a difference.

We had Massey last year do the lawn. Will never do that again. payed 400.00 for nothing. Grass was always brown, didnt grow good. Then I had to argue with them over the Core Aeration that they did. Left a note on my door they did the Aeration. I called them and told them no plugs in the yard and I could not tell that it was even done. Lady told me that it was done, I had to tell them to send a super over. He showed up and said I was right. He called the office, they said oh they did the wrong house it was their mistake. It was a fight.

Make a long story short, they are out, we do our own. Every 2 - 3 months use Scotts Southern Weed and Feed. Grass grows green and thick. Do your own. Dont pay a company to do it. You will get better results!!!!! It said to put the spreader on 3.5 I put it on 4.5 and let it roll around the yard. Does a great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the information... I will be a snowbird for the next year so I will have to find someone willing to fertilize every three months... When I come down full time, in about a year I'll take over the duties myself.

i live in Lousiana which has hard clay soil but lived in Florida for 13 years and have always used Scotts plus for southern lawns and only use it twice a season. My lawn is the greenest and thickest lawn in the subdivision and I use a hand held spreader. If your lawnservice does your fertilizing find out what product they are using. The first year i was here our service ( Provided by the HOA) used something else and I could tell the difference and that is why I do my own fertilizing now. I watched the guy spreading it on the neighbors places last week and he doesnt put it down as thick as i do either . A couple of big circles and he was done. As for aerating - You have golf shoes? Walk around the lawn with them on.

Was a good idea a few years ago.....spikes are not allowed anymore.
