Re: The Quest for the Dress
Good Morning,
Sam Elliott, huh. I had forgotten all about him. Remember him in Mask with Cher, back in the 80's. I just looked him up. Still good. And I saw a picture where he even has a gray ponytail sometimes. I guess it does not get much better than that. I show up in this kitchen most mornings, checking in on TOTV, while I have a little coffee to wake me up. My opening page is msn.com and as of this morning, I am thinking I might just have to break up with that opening page. Why? Well, the first thing I saw on there, just now, over on the left side, there is a stupid headline screaming at me. First :edit: thing in the morning. "Is Your Coffee Killing You?" What!!!! So I decide I had better find out. And I clicked on that :edit: headline. And it was not really an article. It was one of those :edit: slideshows. Set by some mastermind fiend to go really, really fast. At least for in the morning. And I could not catch it. Could not find "pause." Finally I got it. And my coffee is not trying to kill me at all. My coffee may just be good for me. Except it might thin my bones. But it said I could put milk in it for that. I always do. Besides, I still have the bones of a sturdy peasant. But why is msn.com writing such weenie headlines so early in the morning. Made me click I guess. And Mr. Boomer has returned from his annual junket. He is still snoozing. The trip was to Oshkosh, WI, for AirVenture. He had been there since Monday. It's all airpanes, all the time. He goes with his buddies. This year he took one of our family. A younger guy. To hang out with the geezers in Oshkosh. And now he is hooked on Oshkosh, too. They are planning already for next year. There are those who call Oshkosh an addiction for anybody who loves flying. So all day yesterday, Mr. Boomer was flying that little plane. First stop. A small airport near Detroit. Dropping off the young guy. Now officially addicted to Oshkosh. Then flying home to Cincinnati. Smiling all the way home. And I just have to tell you girls a little story about that. Only the girls will understand. Mr. Boomer calls me sometimes from Oshkosh. When planes are not roaring overhead and we can hear each other. So Saturday night he calls. . . And I asked him, "Was today as great as the rest of the week has been?" "Oh, yeah," he answers, "maybe even better. But there's just one thing wrong." "And what might that be, my sweet winged man?" I ask. Expecting to hear the usual. You know. The 'I really miss you' line we all get used to hearing when they call us from their junkets. And you know what Mr. Boomer said to me. To me. His darling wife. Pining away. Keeping the home fires burning. All that stuff. Mr. Boomer actually said to me. To Boomer. Mr. Boomer said, "The only thing wrong with it is that it is the LAST DAY in Oshkosh." But I know this man. And I laughed and so did he. And I let him back into the house when he arrived. So today, I will wait for the dress to arrive. And I will hear all the Oshkosh stories. And I really do like hearing all about Oshkosh. I really do. Boomer

Boomer -
You are such a sketch. I look forward to your every post!!!!! Anxious to hear about the pkg arrival. ......Back to the "crushes" for a minute. I have had a thing for Michael Douglas for as long as I can remember - not just his acting talent, but his personal life as well. He's beautiful, smart and occasionally bad : Did I say that? :dontknow:

Re: The Quest for the Dress
Well, the dresses have arrived. And I really like both of them.
But they are just a little big. I ordered the black one in the next smaller size. It is on its way. But the one with the jacket is not available in the next size down. It's the dress anyway, not the jacket. And it can be taken in a little. And I have to make that knee decision, too. That gorgeous dress will not be taken in by me. That would be a disaster. In the days in which we all had to take home ec classes, my teacher used to just shake her head at me during the sewing classes. Once while trying to hem a skirt, I somehow managed to sew it to the one I was wearing. I remember to this day, the look on my teacher's face, when the bell rang to leave, and there I stood with one skirt sewn to the other. I have several weeks before the wedding. I can either work on becoming a bit more zaftig or have the dress taken in. I ordered the size I normally wear. Could these be the people who were always telling Oprah that she wore a single digit size? Even when she was at her smallest, you know that we were all thinking, "Huh?" And, girls, if that black dress has any appeal to you whatsoever, you might want to give it a try. That one is the second link in my August 1 post in this thread. I am no tall thin model type, but that black dress has the greatest feel to the fabric. It is lined and has something going on with the design at the shoulders and waist that actually works for this old broad sitting here writing to you. When the smaller size comes, the shoulders should work a little better. The fabric has a little stretch to it. And it does not need to be hemmed because of the design of the skirt. There is nothing like a matte jersey that gets the drape right. It can cover a multitude of sins. Also, about shoes, zappos.com, mentioned here by Susi, has the most amazing customer service of anybody I have ever found. I started using them when I would find shoes in a store, only to find they were not in my size. My size is not unusual. It's just everybody's size. So when that happens, I just head home, look at Zappos, usually find what I want and they arrive quickly on my doorstep. It is an interesting company and an interesting concept and so far, from what I have seen, they are getting it right. Thanks again to all of you for helping me with this quest. One more thing though. Does anybody know a source for great sparkly earrings? The ones that look like the real thing. I have checked for the perfect pair at jewelry counters for years and have never hit it right. I will try again. But if there is a good online company, please share. Thanks. And remember, there is no need to fear that black dress. It is quite forgiving. Boomer

Re: The Quest for the Dress
Glad that the dresses are going to work out for you. can't wait to see the pics! Claire's boutiques usually have quite a bit to choose from when it comes to inexpensive sparkly earrings. They have stores everywhere, so I would be suprised if there isn't one near you.
http://www.claires.com/ Thanks for the info on Zappos, I had never heard of them before. I will definitely try that the next time I need shoes. (Which my husband says shouldn't be for the next 30 years based on the number of shoes I currently own!)

Re: The Quest for the Dress
Good Morning,
Here's the next chapter in "The Quest for the Dress." When we were last here together, in this continuing saga, the dress for the wedding had arrived. http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2980217?...=keywordsearch And the agonizing over the shoes had begun. I like the dress a lot, but the color was making it hard to figure out what color shoes to wear with it. So I procrastinated about the shoes. One day I spent about an hour on zappos.com trying to figure something out. But nada. Soooo, one morning my daughter Boomette Valerie (Slave to Fashion) called to see how the quest was coming along. I said, "Oy, the shoes! The shoes! They're making me crazy. Black patent goes with everything evening. Right? I have black patent. I will just wear those." Well, as we all know, age and guile beat youth and inexperience any day. I thought Boomette Valerie's head was going to explode. "You are coming with me to the mall," she ordered. "I will be at that wedding, too, you know. I will not have my mother wearing black patent shoes with that dress. You need metallic shoes. Metallic is tricky. But way in right now. Get the dress and meet me at the mall. NOW!" And so I met Boomette Valerie (Slave to Fashion) at the mall. We were closest to Dillard's so we started there. Usually not my choice. Macy's has those deals. But we went into Dillard's shoe department and someone actually waited on us, immediately. And so the Dillard's shoe lady and Boomette Valerie (Slave to Fashion) went to work. First they made me try on a pair with 4 and 1/2 inch heels. Right. That was going to happen. Even if the match was really good. They made me roll up the legs on my black Capri pants so I could look in the shoe mirror and get the effect. All I could see in that shoe mirror was the image of those black pants stopping at my knees and those high, high heels. My reflection looked like it belonged to a Pilgrim with issues. But then I really lucked out. The second pair of shoes I tried on matched perfectly. I am going to show them to you here and you are going to think that they do not match. The color does not look right on screen. But they do match. Exactly. Boomette Valerie (Slave to Fashion) even took the dress and a shoe out into the parking lot, into the bright daylight, to see if the match worked as well as it did inside. And it did. These things are metallic, although they don't look that way here. The glow or whatever it is works just right with the dress. OK. This stupid link keeps defaulting to black. The color that matches the dress is called "Oxy Pewter" but even if you switch it to that with the dropdown, it still does not look right on screen. So please take my word for it. It works. Actually it's Boomette Valerie's word, which is much better in matters such as these. http://www.dillards.com/webapp/wcs/s...ctId=501309021 So anyway, now I just have to practice walking in these things. The heels are 3 inches. Not 4 and 1/2. So somehow it seemed manageable. In the store. And Boomette said that the whole strap thingy the shoe has going on is fashionable. (I was just thrilled that the toe design did not make me look like Boomer the Impaler.) And then Boomette Valerie (Slave to Fashion) dragged me into Macy's and picked out the perfect pair of earrings. And then she took me out to lunch. And all because I pretended that I was going to wear black patent leather shoes with that dress to a wedding where I will be reading and where almost everyone will know that I am Boomette Valerie's mom. Re: The Quest for the Dress
Boomer, you are very fortunate to have a style-maven daughter to help with the selection of those foxy shoes. I am the mother of three wonderful sons and I didn't mind raising little boys at all. But I did think some day far off, I will miss having a daughter to say to me, "Mom, they're not doing that anymore!". The day has arrived, woe is me :'(
Your outfit for the wedding is sooo lovely, have fun. I did the exact same thing you will be doing for my niece/goddaughter in May 2007. I was so nervous until I had a talk with myself to read to them, the beautiful scripture they chosen, with all the love and hope I had for them and the fact that the wedding was so not about me. It was great and I could enjoy the moment. (Can we see a pic after the party is over?) |

Re: The Quest for the Dress
Boomer,
Those shoes look great! I think it is hilarious that they call them Mary Janes. Mary Jane was never that fashionable! I remember when my daughter was little that there came a point in her upbringing that getting her to do something that you wanted her to do became more difficult. It used to be that you could say "If you do this, then I'll take you to get some ice cream." That always used to work! Then she got older and the bribes had to get larger. Finally, it gets to the point where you can't afford the bribes anymore. And I discovered something that worked ten times better anyway. Embarassment! "If you don't do this, then I will offer to chaperone the dance at your high school." Worked like a charm. It sounds like you are telling me that those powers are still available to me. I must try them out and let you know how it goes. "Bring the grandchildren to my house on Saturday, or I will show up at your work asking to buy some KY jelly and a bunch of condoms." Just might do the trick.......

Re: The Quest for the Dress
Hi Girls,
I did it! Perfectly, I might add! Yep! Perfectly! I projected! I enunciated! I smiled! I made eye contact! I did not blubber and snort and turn all red! I did not even cry! I even got a couple of rave reviews! I walked up steps! I walked down steps! Shiny! Beautiful! Oh so slippery steps! And I did not fall off my shoes! Boomer of the Wedding
