Default Beware of Alfie's

Just wanted to warn everyone about this place called Alfie's in Ocklawaha.

We ate there about 3 weeks ago on a Friday night. It turns out one of the employees stole our credit card number, made up a new card with our number and went on a spending spree to Publix, Winn Dixie and Walgreens. According to the Sheriff's Dept, we weren't alone. There were other's who had their numbers stolen there right around the same time period. I do know the waitress disappeared with our card for about 10 minutes.

I don't know the outcome or who it was as it's an ongoing investigation. What a terrible thing to have done to you when all you do is innocently go out to dinner.

Thanks for the warning. That was terrible. How long was it before you noticed charges that weren't yours?

That's why we froze our credit with all three reporting agencies. No one can open credit in our names. Learned it from Clark Howard.

I certainly wouldn't blame the restaurant. Unless you were specifically told it was a scam by the restaurant, it as as much of a victim as you and your credit card company. Sadly, some people are more honest than others. I'm hoping the police have caught the server who was doing this. In this day and age, it seems the prudent course may be to pay cash at any establishment where the card is taken out of your sight.

I am sorry this happened to you. It really stinks to not be able to trust and incidents like this are bound to make you much more cautious and less trusting.

if you are a member of AAA, they offer a very large discount to the Experian credit monitoring service (like 60+ percent discount), I just joined.

We got an email from Bank of America stating that they noticed fraudulent charges on our card. It was about 3 days afterwards. They said they figured it was unusual for us to buy 478.00 worth of groceries in one day from 3 different stores!

The reason I said beware of Alfie's is because this has been going on for awhile under managements nose. It's not good practice to take someone's check and card and disappear in the back for 10 minutes.

If they took ten minutes they suck at stealing numbers. Pic front and back and swipe the strip. Less than 45 seconds and they are golden

when our card was compromised, the Bank indicated that it could have been taken 2 days ago or 2 months ago... they can't say when it was stolen.. unless the police said it was investigating Alfies, it was not necessarily stolen from that restaurant !!

I would think it is very safe to go to the rest. now.

You can have your cc email you when charges are made. I have any charge over a dollar. This will help you identify problems.

If your cc is cloned - there is no need to open a new cc in order to use the clone - correct?

Correct. Freezing new accounts will help protect from identity theft issues, but not from having the card cloned.

We dined at Alfies 3 weeks ago and had delicious prime rib. No problems with anything before, during or after involving my credit card. Great restaurant!

Your credit card can be compromised without it being a place you shopped or dined. People out in cyber space have the means to get the information. Our card was used by someone traveling in Europe. The credit card company immediately noticed there may be something wrong and called us asking if we had made the charge. They explained this happens and they try to catch the problem immediately and address the situation. We were told, more often than not, the credit card compromise is not traced back to a specific establishment or person, but is a breach through the computer and is a human at the end of the computer.

Did the bank specifically say it was an employee of the restaurant?

The bank probably wouldn't know who it was. The Sheriff's Dept. said it was, according to the OP.

There are bad employees everywhere. A couple of years ago woman working at Sam's Club was issuing cash refunds to customers and also to herself for the same amount. Lady Lake police called our house and asked my husband to come in to sign some sort of statement, as he was one of the customers.
