My mother used to coat Spam with flour, then batter and fry it _ ugh!!! As a child, while at school, I learned the story of Sweeny Todd, the Demon Barber. When I got home, we had Spam fritters for supper. One look at that slab of that pink Spam, and I lost it.... literally!! While I like Scrapple, please don't serve me any Spam

having grown up in the suburbs of phila in the penna dutch country i was exposed to scrapple on more than one occasion. as my dad used to say " they swept up everything from the floor, including sawdust and that is what went in to make scrapple." it is fried, gets a bit crispy, and usually served alongside eggs or waffles.....and a little syrup dribbled onto the scrapple can make it more palatable. needless to say i cannot stand it, the thought of what goes into it is appalling (not appealing). my brother in law who relocated to las vegas has to have his 'fix' of these kinds of regional foods when he visits penna. but, scrapple is really gross.

OK, we know what's in Scrapple. God only knows what's really in Spam. But when it comes to frying Spam and Scrapple the difference becomes apparent. Spam kind of gets greasier. Scrapple gets brown and crusty like breakfast sausage, in fact it is a lot like breakfast sausage. I like it

Scrapple has long been a staple in my house.
My Joy of Cooking cookbook from 1967 gives a recipe for "Pork Scrapple or Goetta." I won't supply the details, but an introduction to the recipe says, "If you use corn meal, call it scrapple. If you use oats, call it Goetta." In my house, it's virtually always eaten with apple butter as a condiment! SWR ![]()

I was in a grocery store last week and saw a box of spam casserole, or something like that. I think it was like Spamburger Helper. Who knew.
My mother-in-law grew up in Philadelphia and loved scrapple. My father grew up in Philadelphia and hated it. We were given spam as kids (but then you couldn't get your shoes on two hours later). I think it must have been at the end of the month right before payday. Which reminds me... remember when flank steak was one of the measl when the food money was running low? Now you practically have to borrow from your 401k to buy it. |

With all the talk of scrapple I had to get some at Publix this morning. Initially I had a problem finding it because they had moved it to the freezer section where the breakfast foods were located. Yummee.
