This was a hotter topic than I thought it would be. Lots of viewpoints though.

My son waits and he thinks if your service is good there should be a tip, Going thru the order letting them know what is what and asking if you need anything else.

Also, this screws the server out of a decent tip, when the runner goofs up, which happens a lot. serve.
I hate it when they come with plates of food and stand at the end of a long table with 16 people and shout out who ordered such and such. I don't hear that good, especially in a noisy restaurant so have no idea if that is my plate or not. Can't the waiter put the position number of the person on the check so the runner knows where it goes? Also when the waiter takes orders they stand at the end of the long table and I'm expected to shout out my order and can't hear what they say. Being too lazy to walk around the table knocks about 25% off their tip as far as I'm concerned.

Solution --- sit at the head of the table - this way you will be able to hear the wait person --- add 25% tip

Thats about the worst advice I've ever heard. How do I know which end of the table is the head and they will come to? They just walk up and start shouting whats on the plates they carry. Many of you seem to have a strong support for waiters whether they are good or not, probably because you have relatives that are waiters. Do them a favor and educate them that their tip depends on good service, not just because they don't get paid well by the restaurant. For a waiter, stop by frequently, see if I need anything, keep my coffee or water filled etc. It's not my problem what the restaurant pays. Give me good service and get 20%. You are working in the real world if you are working in a restaurant which is hard work, but don't expect people to give you anything you don't work for.

I agree that is annoying. Some just aren't good with large parties but I have had Servers that correctly number the seats so no matter who runs the food they get in right and also when they take the order they actually approach every guest. That's A+ service!

HLMRHT, I really hope you never have a child or grandchild who is put into a predicament of being forced to work a job like this. When I was a server in college, I loved it. I didn't have to help pay my co-workers' wages. We did our set ups while on the clock. Takeouts were done by whatever server had time to bag the food up. It's a different job today and servers are really taken advantage of today. It's a hard job under the best of conditions, but the fact that these kids are taken advantage of like this is just wrong. The least we can do is have a little sympathy and help them out if we can and they've earned that tip (and, no, I won't tip for bad service -- never have, never will).
Well said, Redwitch.

Just having a crappy job and crappy salary doesn't count....

Please tell us.
You should expect them to drive to work, the end, because that what 4$/ hr will get. I get it , your retired, but those that are not, dont have a choice. No jobs available.

Very nicely said, and all that is without even "serving" your table with a smile, and just treating them like a person.

16) Dealing with the neg , mean, stingy, people

I would like to see the villages take the lead for the country and that being increase all prices by 25% so that they can pay the employees properly and we all share in that expense. No Tips at all, just a fair price for the food and drink. Some folks tip 15% across the board. Some give 25 %. The 15% is not enough to supplement the waiters pay and the 25% person is being unfairly leaned on. A 12 dollar meal would be 15 dollars and everyone pays the same with no tip required. Then the tight folks would pay 25% and the generous folks would pay 25%.

True it is harder to pack up all that stuff and the waitress has to do it, give her a little something for her work.

So the reasonable solution is for everyone to be unfairly leaned on by adding 25% upfront? Really!
