Please do not turn this thread into a tipping thing. There are too many of them already. This thread is because someone decided to get water and use their own flavoring to make a drink.
This is the question. Is it right of wrong. I thing it is wrong. Either drink water or order something from the menu. I always go with two unsweetened ice teas. Z

Sorry. I thought this was about being cheap. I must have not read the title correctly.

I will take another tack here. I have no idea why I am posting, I cannot help myself, this
![]() I do not want to judge these folks. I personally would draw the line past a simple additive like 'lemony flavor' to water. You add Jack Daniels to the water served and we will have an issue, but a drop of some water flavor? You take my water glass and fill it with my Pepsi as another poster said, we will have an issue. As a restaurant owner or manager I WOULD NOT make a water additive the place I draw my line. I do not need the $0.75, I need their food bill, I need them to return with others who do not bring sweetener and will buy my JD or beer. Disclaimer. I have never owned a restaurant and I have never brought an additive to a restaurant for any drink. Last edited by ajbrown; 04-21-2012 at 05:04 PM. Reason: uppercase NOT |

My grandfather owned a restaurant in which my mother and her brothers and sisters worked in back in the 30's near Pittsburgh. My mother told me of the bums that would come in during the night and order hot water and use the catchup to make tomato soup.

Let's see. If beer is what I like to drink at a bar/restaurant, and I can't drink alcohol and drink only non-alcohol beer....but the bar/restaurant has no N/A beer......
...then some think it's acceptable to bring a can of your own N/A beer in your jacket pocket or purse, and bring it out and drink it at no charge? Or what if I eat fish but not meat or chicken, and the restaurant has no fish on the menu. Can I bring a slab of fish wrapped in plastic in my purse, and ask the server to have the fish "just thrown up there under the broiler for a few minutes" and have that at no charge? I think the problem with the original post's scenario is: where does the restaurant draw the line? The super-cheap ones will not stop at the drinks made with free water. Some will eat most of their entree and then tell the server some lie about something wrong with it so they can get a new order of that, and then they take it home for tomorrow's lunch or dinner. It's stealing. |

This thread just points out why there are very few upscale restaurants and no top-drawer shopping in The Villages. The older we get, the cheaper we become.

Maybe our incomes are less. There is a word for that but I can't remember what it is.

I don't think everyone here has gotten "cheap" or "cheaper" in the extreme like the original post and others here.
I do think most of us want the affordable restaurants we have because we go out so often with various neighbors and friends we meet all around TV, and we don't cook much anymore. |

I love green tea and many restaurants don't serve it. If I really want it and they don't have it, I order and pay for hot tea. They either bring a cup of hot water and a tea bag on the side, or they bring a small kettle of hot water, an empty cup and a tea bag on the side. I pay for the tea and quietly use my own green tea bag.
No way would I ask for a free cup of hot water. Personally, I'd rather forgo the green tea than to use my own at a restaurant and not pay. To me, it seems wrong. You use the restaurant's cup and saucer and maybe kettle, all of which must be served, removed from the table, washed and put away. The water had to be heated. It is not "no cost" to the restaurant. Why should it be no cost to me? Yes, I know. Restaurants serve ice water and don't charge. Well, that is their policy. It is built in to their profit margin. BYOB is not.

What the heck is up with people here??? Why so nasty?? I used to enjoy reading the posts on here. What's putting so many people in bad moods? Life is too short for all this nonsence. I go on here looking for information on topics that will confirm that I am making the right desision to move here, and lately I am beginning to wonder.
