Default Just lost the ninth person I know to COVID 19

I am not posting this to scare or chastise, but I have heard of many people who know no one who has passed due to the Coronavirus, some of whom think it is really not serious. Well, if that is you, you are fortunate indeed, but I am here to tell you it is very real and very serious. In just the last week I have learned of three deaths; one a teacher and former student of mine; one a former college classmate and friendly competitor when we both coached high school basketball in the same conference; and another a long time family friend. I don’t know if my experience is common, but I am certain it is not unique. I am happy we are beginning the vaccine process, but until immunity is pretty universal, I implore everyone to be careful and vigilant. I do not want to add a TOTV friend to my list.

Thanks. The first death in the Villages was a woman named Carol who lived a few hundred feet from where I would sometimes cat and dog sit. This was in Winifred. Probably around April of 2020.

This is from the online article by the other Villages news site.

My brother and his sone both tested positive and had very mild symptoms and are now negative with no after effects.

I did have an uncle who die with Covid but he was 93 years old. He went into the hospital for another issue and got it while he was in there. I don't know if Covid caused his death or if it was the original issue.

The numbers however don't lie. About 90% of the people that get Covid will experience mild to moderate symptoms. About 7.5 % will experience severe symptoms and may have long lasting effects and about 2.5% will die.

Having said that however I look at it this way If you were given a jar of 100 jelly beans was was told that 90 of them were fine, seven of them would make you very sick and three of them would kill you, would you eat any of the jelly beans?

Actually, that number does lie. Numerous studies have suggested a much higher rate of asymptomatic cases. Fauci himself said 40% of cases are asymptomatic.

I think you also summed up the response to getting the vaccine.

I've always used that analogy myself.

While I have used the Russian roulette scenario this virus can leave survivors seriously debilitated, sometimes for life. Amputation anyone? How about regular appointments on a dialysis machine? and more...

that passed away from the flu, pneumonia, auto crashes. overdoses, etc. They are all serious and sad, but part of living on this planet. Take the precautions

At least five of the people I referred to would likely have lived several more years but for COVID 19. They may have eventually died of flu, or pneumonia or an auto crash or overdose, etc., but would not have needed to die at this time. Frankly I find your argument to be insulting. “Fear mongers” are not dictating my actions; common sense and science are. Good luck to you.

I am very sorry for your loss. We have lost two old friends from Cincinnati married to each other for a long time . We have know personally seven people who have survived it, some with hospitalization and some who were not affected greatly. One is our grandson who just got the all clear. He was feverish and had a headache but was able to work at his job remotely.

We are careful and vigilant as you so nicely ask. It is soon to be over and we will not soon forget it.

Great post, thank you. I personally know 3 who have died from the virus, including our next door neighbor in the Villages. I also know several younger people who have contracted the virus, some with minor ailments and others who suffered through severe sickness and ongoing concerns of having to live the rest of their lives with nasty side effects. Please stay safe until the vaccine hopefully makes it safe again for people our age group.

I know many people in The Villages who had it but seem to be fine now. One case that scared me is Tool's frontman Maynard Keenan (age 56, like me) who got it on tour in February and is still experiencing painful arthritis and lung damage months after the fact. Like the analogy of the jelly beans, you can't fully know how bad it may hit you. Better safe than sorry in my book.
