I know there are some people who are anti-social and/or have mental problems but there are some behaviors that completely mystify me. To wit:
*Why would you destroy our courses by not fixing your ball marks and raking bunkers? If you spent your life on public courses playing behind groups who had 4 cases of beer in each cart, we can sympathize. But please act like you know how to behave other than a like thug on a golf course. *What's with the idiots that throw bags of dog feces in the street drains that flow directly into the retention ponds? If I am reincarnated, I want to come back as a dog in The Villages. No finer life is available on this planet. But place my poop properly! Cigarette Smokers: field strip your butts, don't pollute the cantonment area. If you don't understand the lingo, consult your nearest USMC Veteran. TV is NOT an ashtray and flipping your runt out of the golf cart is totally uncool for you left over hippies.

Because most people are so egocentric and selfish that they believe rules are only for "other" people. Drives me nuts.

You're right...but only to a point. Most people are not like this, but the ones that are sure can make it seem that way sometimes.

You nailed it! The "Rules are for others" syndrome.
Also re: bunkers and ball marks... It has been my belief since I came to TV, that many golfers here have never played before getting here. The idea is, "It's free so I'll try it. " No problem with this, but these people do not always know or understand the rules, conventions, and etiquette. I have thought that an "Introduction to the Golf Course" course should be required before golfers receive their PGA cards (Play Golf Acceptably)!!! _

Many of us are drawn to The Villages because we have played golf a LOT in our lifetime so golf etiquette, behavior on the course and following the rules of golf is in essence second nature to us.
I am so pleased that there are so many people who have never played golf that now have the time and the inclination to do so. I have been witness to some sad and ugly things that happened because "old" golfers expect "new" golfers to do the things or not do things according to Hoyle. Some people are better at "pointing things out" than others. So please remember to keep moving. Have your club drawn and ready to step on the tee the second it is your turn and ready to take the next shot when it is your turn. Don't talk when someone is ready to hit the ball. Don't waste time looking for your lost ball and don't take tooooooo many mulligans. One or two a round is good for a beginner. If you have more than ten strokes on a hole...some will say less, please pick up your ball and let the others finish that hole and begin again on the next one. Don't put your feet in the space between where ANY of balls lie on the green and the Imaginary line that ball will take to the hole. That is called "walking in the putting line". Repair the indentations made by the ball hitting the green...even if you didn't make them. When you hit out of the sand, rake the trap to erase the footprints you made. Park your golf cart pin high on the hole and do not write your score or mess with things when you finish the hole. Leave quickly and do that on the next tee. Do not hit into the group ahead of you but do not allow too much space between you and the next group so that the ambassador has to ask you to speed up play. Do all these things while trying to remember to take the club back slowly, swing through the ball, slightly bend your legs and have your hands placed correctly on the club. And they say golf is easy. ![]()

The Villages offers a "good golf" course that not only goes over how to make tee time reservations but also covers some basic golf etiquette. Even for experienced golfers, there is info to be learned. For instance, here in The Villages it is the norm to leave rakes in the bunkers at a 90 degree angle. This may be different from other clubs where people have played. When I play with beginners or more experienced golfers that haven't taken the time to learn respect for the game, I will remind them in the friendliest manner possible of golf etiquette such as raking bunkers, not stepping on another golfers line on the green, repairing ball marks, filling divots with sand (here in Florida we don't replace the divot like we did up north), and not injuring the green by throwing the flag down. I also hate to see golfers entering and leaving some of our steep bunkers from the high side. It looks like they are mountain climbing and wind up injuring the lip of the bunker. The good news is that I really don't see these behaviors that often.

Are bunkers those holes that are filled with sand? I noticed that they had rakes but I thought those were for the nearby flower beds.
