Default Owens Corning Roof Inspection

Owens Corning inspected our roof in Amelia for defective shingles and said it was OK. Wondering if anyone in Amelia or nearby had problems?

Owens Corning reported the same for our roof in Hadley while all the neighbors were found to have defective shingles ... have asked them to re-test

I believe most of Hadley has been replaced - at least it seems that way around where I live off Ambrosia.

I'm still waiting for my roof shingles to be tested. They have just completed replacing roofs in the lower part of Hadley, Ellenton Run cul de sac. They have been working very fast but prob still have a lot of work ahead of them.

Couple of suggestions:

Start with the warranty dept and find out who did the original roof on your house. Call that roofer and ask them come out and inspect your roof. (Some roofers are inspecting for free and others are charging a fee).

If you have any downspouts from the gutters, emptying onto the driveway, check to see if there is any sediment from the shingles on the driveway or in the gutter at the road. Maybe even have someone look into the gutter on the roof.

Lastly if you still have concerns get the name of another roofing company and ask them to check the roof. Our neighbor had her roof inspected and they said there was no problem. A couple of weeks ago, after a heavy rain, she had a fair amount of sediment on the driveway from the roof. She took pictures of it and called someone else to get a 2nd opinion. Couple of days ago she got a letter from Owens stating she did indeed have a defective roof.

A number of houses around us here in Hadley had their shingles inspected. Some were OK and some were defective, so apparently the defects were hit or miss from house to house. Two houses across the street from us have already had their shingles replaced and we finally received our approval from Owens Corning this weekend, more than four months from our initial contact with OC. Our defect was an excess of the gravel that came off the shingles.

BTW, the roofer that inspected our roof at no cost and did the other roofs around us was Barney Barnard of C&S Residential Roofing of Hernando FL, 352-637-0049. The entire job of the houses across the street from us took around two full days, but ours may take a little longer since Jack's Solar needs to remove then reinstall the solar heat for the pool.

Hmmm, called warranty dept and my house has Owens Corning OakRidge shingles, installed in approx March 2006.

The original roof blistering problem was on the Supreme and Classic series. This more recent issue affects OakRidge shingles where granules are breaking loose. Warranty said OC will contact me if I have a potential issue.

So, do I wait patiently or proactively contact OC or a local roofer to take a look. To date, no noticeable symptoms. For those of you who have had recent action, did OC contact you first?

I contacted the authorized installer I noted in my above post to inspect the roof. He told me I had a problem then I called OC at 1-800-766-3464 and got a claim number which I then supplied to the installer. He'll tell you if you don't have a problem and that would be the end of it. I would not wait to hear from OC. Be proactive! Good luck!

I've got the OakRidge shingles and have granules coming off. During one of the recent storms I noticed water spilling over the edge of the gutter. When I inspected it after the rain stopped, it had a half inch of granules over its entire length. There are granules accumulating at the end of the downspouts.

I called warranty and they gave me the name of the roofer. I'm waiting for a call back. I'll post the result.

No, Owens did not contact us even though warranty said Owens would. Since we were approaching our 5yr window we had our original roof installer check the roof, we then contacted Owens to start the process based on the roofers feedback.

If you are within 5yrs of install Owens pays everything. But the further away from the 5yr date the homeowner pays more and more of the cost.

I believe we were one of the first homes in my section of Hadley to have a roof replaced. The problem was picked up by the home inspector we hired to inspect the purchase of a 4 year old home. Our problem was not granular loss, but the shingles were curling. Our realtor told us once our roof gets replaced the whole neighborhood will follow and she was absolutely right.

OC sent a letter to us and just showed up one day to do the inspection. Then we got the letter saying our shingles were OK.

The roofing company that did our house came out yesterday to inspect the roof. He said the roof is in good condition for a seven year-old roof. The granules we saw were normal loss, and did not indicate failing shingles. He went over the whole roof carefully.

Whew! That's a relief. According to other posts, we would have had to bear some of the costs of re-roofing since the roof is past the five year mark.

We are in Hadley and saw neighbors getting their roofs replaced so we called TV Warranty and got name of roofer who installed our roof who inspected it and said we had "excessive granule loss" and sent sample shingles to Owens Corning (OC) . OC tested shingles and said they were OK ... I asked them to re-test which they say they did and shingles are still OK ... had different roofer inspect roof who said we had "excessive granule loss" and sent in more sample shingles. Yesterday I called OC re status of claim and they said they had everything they needed and that they changed their claim procedure: for all houses with roofs installed in 2008 they had hired their own inspector and he/she would contact us in August to inspect the roof ... FYI ...
