Default I'll have to see it again and check out the accent of Tom Hanks.

My only complaint is he fell out of the Vermont accent a few times but I can live with it.

I saw the movie last weekend. As soon as the movie began, I was the one held captive. Then it was over...more than two hours later. It's been a long time since that has happened.

It appears that this movie is getting great reviews but I have little interest in seeing it. Captain Phillips lives in our neck of the woods up North but I understand that, reading about what his shipmates had said, he wasn't even supposed to be in those waters. I have no idea if it was jealousy on their part or if his shipmates had harbored ill-feelings for his Hollywood success. That said, there have been plenty of movies made that have 'Hollywood-ized' events. By the way, loved Olympus Has Fallen and Gravity was visually stunning. Looking forward to see Prisoners before it leaves.

Here are some of the reasons I didn't like it:

1) The plot offered no surprises. We knew from the very beginning what was going to happen: Somali pirates took over a ship and eventually their plan to collect a ransom was foiled.

2) The only thing the movie had going for it, besides Tom Hanks, was non-stop violent behavior. It was tense from the very beginning and got progressively worse as time went on. Violence is basically all they had going so they needed to stretch it out with the help of a strong leading character like Tom Hanks. Give me a break!

If you got motion sickness from

3) The part about the lifeboat, because it was so prolonged and bobbing up and down, caused me to get motion sickness. I think the camera must have been hand-held and it was panning all over the place. It reminded me of when we first started taking 8 millimeter home movies about 65 years ago.
At one point I left to get a drink of water and I almost felt like I needed to throw up.

4) The best part, if you can call it that, is when the 3 Somali pirates got shot. I was so thankful that it was over. I didn't start feeling normal until several hours later.

Warning: If you have a tendency to get motion sickness, it might be best to avoid seeing this movie.
If you got motion sickness from this movie, then "Gravity" would completely put you over the edge! You probably should stick to Disney.

You're probably right. The truth can be so boring, the director should of had free reign and rewrote the entire story. Maybe if Tom Hanks had been shot through the head, that would of been more exciting. How about, Aliens landing in the water and capturing Tom Hanks and taking him back to their planet. What if the Somalis never hijacked the ship and they just cruised to their destination without anything happening. I see where you're coming from now, more explosions, more car chases, how about instead of Tom Hanks we had Arnold or Sylvester play the role, that would of been different.

Captain Phillips will probably give Tom Hanks and others associated with this picture a good shot come Oscar time as some of the other movies with buzz have postponed their opening dates.

Loved the movie while it was playing, but I doubt its complete accuracy.

Spoiler Alert - do not continue reading if you plan to see this movie.

During the part where Philips tries to escape and is in the water, the obvious response from the SEALs would be to shoot everyone in the lifeboat - especially the pirate who appears in the door and fires his gun into the water. One could possibly argue that they didn't know who the people in the water were (perhaps just a couple of pirates going out for a moonlight swim?), but once the shooting into the water started, there is little doubt as to where Philips was and that he was in danger of being shot. To not take out the shooter was putting Phillips' life in dire jeopardy.

In all liklihood, the real answer to this is that this part of the plot was not true, but rather concocted by Hollywood to create tension - just as the movie about the rescue of the Americans held hostage in Iran had a lot of Hollywood untruth written into it.

I give it 5 stars. I especially liked the US Navy scenes ... kind of like the modern day equivalent of the cavalry riding to the rescue
I was making a decision, about which movie to see, with my lady-friend. She doesn't like violent movies and I don't either. But she is a BIG Tom Hanks fan. I told her it was going to be violent but she pointed out that it was rated PG 13. She figured that it couldn't be too violent with that rating and I decided to trust her judgement.

Facts are not silly. Facts are simply facts. If I expected a surprise ending that would be silly. But I wasn't expecting a surprise. I was just trying to point out the fact that knowing everything that's going to happen makes long protracted violence (2 hours and 10 minutes) tedious.

I think they could have managed the situation much better. The key to foiling the pirates from boarding the ship was the ladder. When a pirate climbs up a ladder he needs two hands. He can't hold a gun in one hand. Therefore the pirate is totally vulnerable to attack when he reaches the top of the ship's railing.

First of all, how would I have known before hand. Second, I can't take dramamine.

Yeah, it was amazing how they were able to do it.

I think they could have accomplished everything in 90 minutes (tops). I think the audience is quite capable of getting the message of how bad it was in 90 minutes. There was no need to stretch out the violence and make it 130 minutes.

You know how they sometimes say, "too much of a good thing can be bad?" Well, in this case, "too much of a bad thing makes for a bad movie."

We went and saw it last night and was very impressed. Tom Hanks can and does play characters that you can really relate to. The Somali fellow that played the leader did an outstanding job also. I really liked the part when the Somali fellow put his gun to Tom Hank's forehead so hard that he left his barrel impression. My husband was in the Navy and he kept talking about the ships that were in the movie. I hope Tom Hanks gets an Oscar because he really deserves it!!

My sister saw it and said it was great. Reviews seem mixed though. I do like Tom Hanks so I'm putting it on my list.
