Gee, maybe somebody from the government watched the CBS news piece and it will inspire them to pass a whole bunch of new laws to make golf carts safer and more expensive. Let's hope not.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, over the past eight years, 16 people in the Villages riding in gold carts have been killed in road accidents. Almost all of them were not wearing seat belts and were ejected.
A community of 110,000 people and 60,000 golf carts has two fatalities per year. This is news?

How many people were killed in car accidents in communities of this size in that eight year period? How many motorcycle fatalities were there in The Villages in that same time? How many bicyclist were killed?

But keep an eye out of mandatory seat belts and higher insurance rates in our future.

When the Villager driving the cart said it's street legal "because it has license plates", that's a poor, poor explanation. There are thousands of "license plates" on golf carts that are purely ornamental, from our previous residences/states.

There is much, much more to the story on what is a street legal cart and what is a regular golf cart that is allowed on most Villages streets except the 35mph boulevards and roundabouts.

I think the clip was useless except to say that this is what "old people" do and that 16 people got killed on them. I wish the News networks would stick with "news" instead of fluff like this.
According to the text, he said that it's "legal" because it has license. That would imply that carts without plate are not legal. If you ask me, there's more risk of injury or death driving a street legal cart on roads where the speed limit is 35 and 40 mph is commonplace.

I watched this segment and I'm not sure I got the point, if there even was any. Was it:
a) someone at CBS news thought it would be cute to show gramps tooling around in tricked out golf cart?
b) someone at CBS news has a parent living in TV and had an axe to grind about golf cart accidents?
c) notice they slipped in "Urban areas are beginning to think slower is better"--?prelude to more regulations, cart paths in cities at God knows what cost, more government control of your life?
d) Note they only mentioned electric carts, even though the vast majority of carts in TV are gas. Was this a subtle push for a "green" agenda, ultimately addressing "the most important security concern for the US"---"global warming"?
Sad that you cannot watch a fluff piece on a known liberal TV station and not suspect a political agenda. Maybe this "important" issue will be a question at the next presidential debate.
What I would really like to know, given that most of our electricity is generated from fossil fuels, is the actual carbon footprint, per mile driven, of gas vs. electric carts. Also, the environmental impact of manufacturing and eventually disposing of all those batteries which contain toxic material?

If this is representative of the detail of their reporting, I am no longer watching CBS news...

It was only about 2 minutes. How much can they say in that amount of time? I thought it was reasonable. It did not portray TV in a negative view, imo. In fact, the reporter noted that TV was "quite a sight" for someone who had never visited before. It finished with saying that cities in California and New York were "fast tracking" LSVs to slow traffic down.

A content-free human nature piece. For anybody living outside The villages, they probably yawned through the whole video. No subliminal messages intended to control behavior.

Why? Safer?---I doubt it in heavy traffic. Billions to change road lanes and parking spaces? Let me guess----"electric carts" only? That way the government can cram their "global warming" agenda down our throats. Add to that the cost of 10-14K each, Yamaha and EZ Go are licking their chops. Cost of garage space in a big city?--$500+/month. The vast majority of inner city residents won't be able to afford it. Easy to steal, easy to "carjack"---the "bad guys" will love it, and the "good guys" aren't allowed to have CCPs.
Golf carts on a golf course and a community that primarily is residential and surrounds those courses are great. Wouldn't want to drive one thru the south side of Chicago or Bed-Sty. Another brilliant idea from the rocket scientist politicians and urban planners.

Where is the data that New York or California is considering LSV's as a form of transportation?
And why do they cost 10-14k when a Nissan Versa 1.6 S cost $12,815 (including destination charge)

So far, only on CBS news

And why do they cost 10-14k when a Nissan Versa 1.6 S cost $12,815 (including destination charge)

Different target market

In other words, they will charge 10-14k because we will pay 10-14k. If that's what you mean, then that's what I also suspected. Clearly the versa is a superior product for getting around and costs far more to manufacture.

Diamonds are among the most common rocks on Earth, but their supply is strictly controlled, otherwise they would be essentially worthless. 150 years of marketing as well and you are willing to pay $800-$12,000 per carat for a lump of carbon. Wish I thought of it first.

I watched the news clip and concluded it was a masterful job of mis-information.

Out of the 50-60 thousand golf cars in TV they choose to feature the low speed vehicle as the focus of the golf cart story of TV. When there is much more of a story about the use of golf carts in general.

The story was not very well edited jumping from cart shots, to random street shots to wrecked golf carts.

Missed the point.
Poorly done.

Amateur empty space filler clip.
