One of my best friends in junior high had a drunk for a father. He didn't consider himself an alcoholic since he only drank beer, but he drank it every night until he passed out. He'd chug the beer and the next one would be opened before the last was put down. Three six packs an hour really was possible for him. He ultimately died in a car accident. Sadly, so did the family of four he plowed into. So did my friend riding with her father.
Alcoholism is ugly. You can't help a drunk until they are ready for the help. The best you can do is try to protect yourself and society. I've more than once called 911 when I've seen someone driving erratically. I've given my name, the make of the vehicle, the location and the license number. The OP made the mistake of asking for advice here. As has been said, the best recourse is to call the Sheriff's Department. Since the Sheriff does have a policy of pulling over golf carts at the squares, I would probably go to the square when my neighbor is there and give the LEO on duty a head's up about this guy. And Gilchrist AC Guy, thank you for caring.

Reading comprehension is hard. Please highlight where I said that I don't want a drunk to be arrested. I said don't make a fool of yourself out videotaping people you think are drunk. I told him to call the police. Let the police do their job.

How about a concerned citizen group. Purchase an accurate breathilizer, set up camp in or near one of the squares offering free BAC analysis. Maybe your wrong, and all these folks are not drunk, or maybe they are and did not know. At a minimum, it would be a posstive way of getting the message out.

Three things I have always told my children and grandchildren.. In fact it is a joke even now when they go out the front door. They get their kisses and their I love you's and stand and wait for the rest;
Don't drink and drive. Don't have unprotected sex. Save your money. Disclaimer. I waited until they were in their mid teens to give this advice, but I did give it every time they left me.

Not so fast; during my career as a LEO, I probably arrested a half dozen people for DWI that blew between .35 and .39. Worked a wreck one night on a .27 and almost got ran over while working the wreck by a .38.

I would not get involved too much. If its bothering so much just ask the Police what to do. They have an open ear and will do something and most importantly, they'll give you an advice.

Many years ago I was stopped at a light and an intoxicated person rear ended me knocking my car into the intersection. Witnesses said he had to be doing thirty. I had a feeling the last second just before he hit me he wasn't stopping. He fell out of his truck and tryed to walk away. He blew a .34 on the breathalyzer. He had his license reissued 2 weeks before the accident. This was his 5th DUI.

Can Anyone make any suggestion on how to handle a drunk neighbor.
If you want to change him, get him to think about changing or wonder everytime he pulls out of the driveway who's watching why don't you print this thread and give it to him. He'll probably move. |

A couple of posts reminded me of my brother in law's advise to his children. As an aside he had been a prisoner of war in WWII. His advise was, "Do what you want but ever bring trouble or the police to my door"..How did they turn out:
1 Daughter is a retired assistant District Attorney in Sacremento, California. 2. The second child (a son) is now the Principle of a large High School in Calif. 3. The 3rd child is a senior executive in a large Casino in Las Vegas. No bad for some simple advise. Of course they respected their father and knew he was serious. ![]() |

I'm the first one to say live and let live, but in this case other people's safety would be a concern. If speaking to the neighbor or someone that lives with them is not an option, please contact the local police. At that point, in my opinion, you have done all you can do to protect the innocent and you will need to hope for the best. |

Thus far 86 replies and 6385 views. Starting to compete with dog p--p. For the record of 86 replies there has been 5 possible solutions offered.
1. Call the police 2. Let a family member know 3. Talk to the "dude" 4. Contact AA 5. Live and let live |

7. Sounds like the OP has a lot of time on their hands, the OP should offer to be the "designated driver" for the drunk neighbor! 8. Organize an intervention, make sure to have it early in the morning when he is likely to be semi sober (don't serve mimosas)! 9. Ask the liquor stores to charge him more for the beer, so he runs out of money sooner in life (if he can't afford beer, he will drink less)! For the love of god, this could save MANY lives!! |
