And…you are assuming they are going to let you use theirs? Their phone their air time. Isn’t that being a bit like those people looking for a handout?

When I go out, I carry my cell. Only DW and I know the number. For emergencies ONLY.

Agreed! Perhaps some do not understand there are areas in the lower 48 that don't have cell phone signal. OMG the sky is falling!

Don't worry, Mike G, if you have an emergency and I am there, I will make the call for you. No, you don't get to use it. Give me the number, I will make the call.

And you would be the dead guy if no one could call 911 from a cell. Do you realize at the average age in TV, the chance of someone actively doing chest compressions correctly for 20 minutes would be a miracle.

Might want to wear a DNR tag, so no one bothers to waste cell call to save you. I respect those who have DNR wishes.

So sorry you stink at golf, and every waiter stops taking your order because they have a cell phone. You must have really bad luck.

A cell phone isn't an evil Talisman that turns people into rude self absorbed slobs, they already were before owning one. In our group of friends no one grabs their phone and ignores the rest of us. Maybe you need a better circle of people to associate with.

If you don't know what a Swiss Army Knife is, then you definitely don't need a cell phone.

Am I to assume you missed the, admittedly small, bit of humor in my reference to the, supposed juvenile, texting not knowing what a Swiss Army Knife is?
Again, I carry a cell for emergencies, not because I want it for entertainment, but because I consider it an almost essential tool now days.

I do have a dnr. But that is an interesting point. If I go down dancing in the town square how do I protect my self from someone trying to bring me back when that is not my wish ? Back on the cell phone necessity - I also (well actually my lovely bride and I) had two children before cell phones and somehow I got the message to get her to the hospital and be the coach. And I still live in an area 6 months per year without cell service. I actually like it.

I know a family that when they get together for a meal over the Holidays, there's a box
at the front door.
Yep you guessed it, all cell phones are put in the box.
No answering calls, no texting

You don't say why you refuse to own/carry a cell phone. What is the reason?

I’ve got one only because I got tired of hearing land line ring 50 times day. Only carry it when I have to and it not glued to my face 23.50 hours of the day. Now I can block all calls I don’t know who’s calling. Might as well get one cause land lines will going the way of the phone booth in couple years.

I'm glad you ask.......

Expense is one.
$1200 -$1400 for the latest and greatest cell phone, plus the price of a monthly calling plan is a joke.

I also see them as a adult pacifier that they stare into while your talking to them and go berserk when they lose them or leave the house without their stupid phone.

Don't get me wrong, if used correctly they are great, like keeping in touch with family
up north, checking in at the airport or hotel, checking prices etc.

Sorry, just my opinion

What can one do to avoid having to use one of these evil expensive devices?

There must be something... Oh, I know... Don't buy one... Problem solved...
