Why do they use a certain news outlet or any news outlet at all?

Do they get paid from this source to be on their airwaves?

It would be easy to say just don't listen to them but they do blast it all around the Squares.

Maybe they should just stick to music if you're going to have speakers up all over the place.

Same thing at the TV gyms, why is there huge TV'S with cable news on? It's a gym put sports or nature on stop inudating us with news. The TV'S are so big it's impossible to ignore.

As a kid the news came on at 6pm-7pm unless there was some emergency.

Even going out to eat all you hear is news conversations.

When did we as a society become so addicted to news?

I can't even watch golf without being blasted with repetive commercials for news organizations.

Give us a break with all this so called news.

Don't turn this into politics as it's not allowed, this is just about the sheer amount of news that is bestowed on us.

I think that post is really 2 questions in one:

First, why are Americans addicted to the 24 hr news cycle????

I don't know, but IMHO it began with the Iran hostage crisis with daily updates after the 11 o'clock news that led to "Nightline". Add to that Ted Turner's CNN and all the sensational advertising for any little news item, and I think they reshaped the way in which we view the news.

Second, why does TV play the news that they play?

Again, I don't know, but I suspect it is simply a case of giving the people what they want.

Between all the repetitive advertisements, pushing open houses, and crappy disco, I can’t wait for the news on the hour. If I had to listen to the voice of the woman doing the advertisements for Davis Family Hearing on a daily basis, I wouldn’t want to find a solution to my hearing issues.

I wonder if it is cost related? Perhaps news channels can be streamed for little or no cost, while ESPN or Nature or National Geographic or the Learning Channel have a higher subscription fee.

Here’s what I do , I turn Pandora on as soon as I get up and never turn the t v on all day , the only exception is for football .I read a few news papers before I go out , a couple of international and the Boston globe . I listen in the car to jazz or sports talk radio , I have never listened to any of those cable shows whether they are left or right politically. I don’t bother looking at the gym or in restaurants , I do watch ABC news and most of PBS news hour on tape ,it’s very simple to ignore all the different news cycles if you choose to , but most don’t or they complain that it shouldn’t be on all the time it annoys them,WELL DO’NT WATCH I guarantee your life will be a little more mellow

And may I add, why do local TV newscasts do the weather every 5 minutes and sports gets 5 minutes total?

And who controls the background music selection in major stores? Rap and hip hop are not particularly soothing to elder ears.

I think you are spot on with your analysis. I remember in 1991, with Operation Dessert Storm, being glued to the TV. I'm sure it was great for revenue. My take on it is that the networks are always trying to hype up every newsworthy, and some not so newsworthy, event, trying to get us glued to the TV.

I'm sure that's why every forecast weather event becomes the next "Super-Duper-Storm-of-the-Century-Even-Bigger-Than-The-Last-Super-Duper-Storm-Of-The Century!!!", with the unfortunate result that we all become inured to it, and some folks decide to ride one out with disastrous consequences.

I doubt it has anything to do with giving people what they want. No one I know, including myself and my spouse, have ever been asked by WVLS what we want to hear through their speakers in the town squares. If they had asked, we might have had an answer other than the fox "entertainment" news network (remember they are officially not news, they are entertainment).

Then again I'd also prefer a little more variety in their music lineup. I like the oldies they put on, but I'd also like other stuff added to it.

They're not talking about the TV. They're talking about walking around the town squares, where they have WVLS coming out of the speakers in all the public areas. If you're in a town square during the day, maybe trying to enjoy an early lunch out on a restaurant patio, you have NO CHOICE as to what sounds come through those speakers. You can't ask anyone to change it, or turn it off, or lower the volume.

I believe the thread was about THE NEWS, not WLVS's music choices. That being said, I think a poll of Villagers would not be inclined to choose MSNBC as their preferred news outlet, despite the fact that they are extremely entertaining by being totally out of touch with reality.

Where does this WVLS get broadcast over speakers in the squares? I've always heard WVLG when there. Once is a typo, but three times?

I seem to remember radio stations always having news updates every hour.
