Maybe they should just stick to music if you're going to have speakers up all over the place.

Same thing at the TV gyms, why is there huge TV'S with cable news on? It's a gym put sports or nature on stop inudating us with news. The TV'S are so big it's impossible to ignore.

As a kid the news came on at 6pm-7pm unless there was some emergency.

Even going out to eat all you hear is news conversations.

When did we as a society become so addicted to news?

I can't even watch golf without being blasted with repetive commercials for news organizations.

Give us a break with all this so called news.

Don't turn this into politics as it's not allowed, this is just about the sheer amount of news that is bestowed on us.
I stopped going to TooJays years ago because of the content of the t.v.'s. It would cause customers to air grievances while I was trying to enjoy my meal. Who needs that? Granted, not eating there wasn't much of a sacrifice.

The point, is that the only way they can know what people want to hear, is to ask the people. Which - they haven't done. We listen to Fox news on VLG in the squares, because that is what they have chosen to impose on us - whether we want to listen to it or not.

A lot to comment on here for sure. Music ? Have to agree "they" whoever "they" are, have gone way too far forcing their chatter, ads, and music to extend to the pools and other amenities of the residents ! It is really annoying, REALLY annoying. The Villages sales offices, street of dreams locations, etc., fine, it's their choice, like any department or grocery store. There should be some way the residents could get it out of the amenities. Many like to read after a swim, some just want to be able to communicate, some want to nap in the sun !
The question of how the 24 hour began ? Well, to me it seems to have started train and airport waiting areas put in CNN. Not everyone had a personal cell phone or a tablet back then, so it was either read a book, magazine, or paper, or just "people watch" to entertain ones self. It was after all, hugely successful, so many followed suit and presently the over abundance is probably (?) the result of the whole concept being so successful. As for gyms, I've belonged to quite a few but always been fortunate to be able to find one with individually controlled TV on the various machines. Not sure I would enjoy a gym where only the choice of the manager or owner was forced on me. But at least one has a choice, to patronize or not patronize... but the Villages, forcing their preference on every resident at the RESIDENT'S pools... not so smart. It is too bad "they" chose to blast the squares too, but to me, that falls under the heading "not my business" what they chose to blast out... the squares to me are more like department and grocery stores, their choice, but at the resident's rec centers, pools, etc. shame on "them" !

Agree... but isn't that just part of democracy (?) and the USA. By that I mean, the "squares" here differ from what we know as a square in a traditional town, be it Leesburg or Orlando. To me at least, the "squares" here are a public area controlled by a private enterprise. In many ways like the "public" squares and outdoor eating and drinking areas of Disney, or like Publix or Beall's. The owners of the Villages have selected what they wish to broadcast, go into a Starbucks, and that corporation may have chosen different news or music for their establishment. I was on the square in downtown Ocala about a month ago, enjoying a lovely outdoor lunch. Ocala is a traditional municipality, yet, what did I hear ? Yes, loud speakers playing "someone's" (the mayor ? city council ?) music selections for all the public in the ares ! But I maintain that residents "should" be entitled to go to the community pools without being forced to listen to a radio program I would never listen to in my own home.

True enough. So why not start a poll?----ask the people if they would prefer Fox or MSNBC. I'm pretty sure you won't like the answer. (Personally, I have no use for either of them)

How could we stop the intrusion of what we don't care to listen to? They can feed whatever they want and there is nothing that we can do.

I started swimming laps last year at the sports pools and noticed the radio station was on, fairly loud.

Of course, it has to be fairly loud for me to hear it, especially if I'm in the water. I found it to be a mixed blessing. I enjoyed the music while swimming, although not every selection was a favorite, the overall mix was OK by me.

While FOX news is not my "go to", as far as I could tell, the news was pretty straight news, as opposed to political commentary disguised as news and defended as entertainment.

My take on this: . Much of what goes on in TV is developer driven, and directed towards marketing of TV. This was going on before I was here, and I was well aware of that fact before I bought. I like it more than I don't like it, and I strongly suspect more people like it than don't like it. It's part of the culture here. Not my favorite part, but it's part of it, and while there are parts of the culture here I'm not crazy about, there is so much I do like about TV that, like most of us, I accept the parts I'm not wild about so I can enjoy the parts I am wild about.

Now, let's get back to Tommy Roe, and "Oh Sweet Pea"...

Smile Gee do you have WVLG piped in to Paradise City?

Seems to me that you would get a respite in AZ unless you live stream it. Personally, I think it's a great thing that TV has their own station and should be proud to broadcast in the squares. There are plenty of eateries that don't have it in their establishments and other businesses as well. Have a fabulous day!

Default The world is run by corporate oligarchs

Best option to avoid all your peeves is to get some nice warm
Mukuks, a seal or grizzly bear skin coat, a rifle and an ax.
No need to worry about electricity or radio broadcasts and move to the Brooks range.

Nothing but a Tempest in a Teapot...

I can't remember the last time I actually paid attention to the radio station playing in the squares... I do remember standing under a speaker once, waiting for the wife to come out of a store and what I heard was some "open house ads", some "lost pet announcements" and some classic rock...

Any other time, when walking thru the squares, I must just tune it out (married 41 years, I've learned to do that quite well... ), as I don't even notice it... I guess I'm just not looking to be offended...

At the pool, I bring my own ear buds and listen to the music I want to hear on my iPhone...

Indoctrination.

They want the FOX brainwashing to continue... just like the daily rag newspaper. We stopped listening and stopped receiving the paper.

Sad and quite shocking, in this day and age.
