Default Mower/Small Engine Repair

I'm considering a move to TV. I've never lived in an HOA and have heard several horror stories about them. It;s kinda scary.

Point is, I'm retired and I do small engine repair out of my home garage for friends and neighbors as a cottage industry at my current location. It adds a couple of extra bucks to supplement my paltry cop pension.

Question: How would that be received in TV?

It's not a high volume operation and all testing of the equipment is simply completing my own yard maintenance. In other words, if I need to test run a string trimmer, I trim my sidewalk. Nothing extra than what would normally be associated with my own landscaping.

Please add your thoughts and comments, thanks!

Would not be received well. Against running a business out of your home.

So no mower will ever be running or sputtering unless you are actually mowing your own lawn? You won't be running motors to improve their performance or tuning them at all. So the only noise you will produce is when you are doing your own lawn?

By the way, we don't have an HOA here. But we have some rules, and one is no business can be run from your home. Being a retired cop I am sure you believe rules are meant to be followed. You could have a business where you offer to go to other person's homes to fix their mowers at their home, not yours.

When Fenney first opened there were no places to get food nearby other than the Fenney Grille which was great. A new resident posted she was making pizzas in her home and was selling them at a very fair price. Within a few days someone that didn't even live in Fenney turned her in, no more pizza. Also happened to a lady selling cupcakes. So, you might want to re-think trying to run a business out of your home down here.

First there lot ICE (which soon see) haters around here, second, there a few snobs, third, most neighborhoods are quiet, occasionally probably wouldn’t be problem, but roll do dice. Last, not to many actually mow there own yards so you skill would be limited to few. Deed restrictions prevent major maintenance on vehicles. Far as business from home it restricted, but villages full of restrictions being broken.

Thanks all for your replies. Looks like my plan would not be a GO at The Villages.

Time to re-think the move.

That reminds me of another question I had about TV: I do all my own car (midsized pickup) and motorcycle maintenance and repairs.

So, oil changes, tire rotations, the occasional parts replace would raise the ire of the neighbors?

That wouldn't work for me. I offer free pickup and delivery but I need to do all the work in my own garage or I can't concentrate properly.

Oh well.

Thanks for your reply. Before I signed up here, I was pouring thru the forums on this site and it seemed that over the years, there were a lot of homeowners that were requesting mower repair with pickup service.

Seemed like my plan was going to work but I definitely have learned something different from the responses here.

Once you realize the size of the property in TV, how close your neighbors are (14’-20’ish), between houses, the driveways are short, especially south of 44(larger backyard).
Large garages in TV are few and far between, but south of 44 there are some 4 car.

North of 44 many lawns are commercially mowed, by companies or privately owned. South of 44 many mow their own lawns, but in our neighborhood most of us have electric battery powered equipment. Our northern home is 3/4 acre, here I can mow, trim, weed, my lawn in less than 30 minutes, so battery is very popular.

Running a business out of your home is against deed restrictions, and someone will file a complaint.

You do have an option of renting garage space in commercial areas, which is very popular with those who proudly possess a vintage car. Friends group rent a unit very close to TV, and share working on their cars, even storing a car or two, due to lack of space at home

So options, but just not at your residence, or understanding you may be the most unpopular neighbor

Did you consider applying for a job at a local repair shop?

Our neighbor has a lift in his garage so that he can put a car up for extra storage. He does change oil in there and has lifted our car up to check on a noise we were hearing. It has to be an extra high garage.

After my first experience at local dealer on simple oil change was last time I paid someone else Beings I had to crawl under and remove quart oil where they over filled it and didn’t even pull dip stick out and check after they got done. I do it myself until I’m not able, by then I might get electric car or been planted?

When I first arrived here, it scared me. I saw several people around the area with what looked liked knives sticking out of their back. But later I realized, yep, it's the friendliest community in America to your face.
