My friends who live south near marsh say mosquitos are a problem. Evans Prairie restaurant...outside in the evening...get eaten alive. We live near Spanish Springs for 13 years now and rarely see a mosquito...TV sprays regularly in our area at night.

Yes. Lived in DeLuna. They are bad down there even with spraying. North of 466A now. Haven't seen... I mean been bit by one yet.

Used to see bats WHICH IS a good thing. They eat thousand of misquitos per hour. Agree, let nature do its thing. Frogs and toads help with that too. Don't have any of those where I am now either.

We live on a pond and you can’t go out at night in the back because of the mosquitoes. If there is water in the preserve you will have mosquitoes.

I've lived in The Villages since 2009 (full time since 2016) and have had absolutely zero problem with mosquitos. Also lived in South Florida for 24 years with zero problem with mosquitos. I guess the communities I have lived in did a very efficient job of killing those little buggers.

We back up to a large preserve in Hawkins and we do see mosquitoes at dawn and dusk with dusk being the worst. But I will say I was pleasantly surprised that it's no worse than Michigan in the summer as I thought it was going to be much worse.

Default Mosquitos and preserve sites

We live on a large pond AND a preserve site. Sumter County does a great job of spraying for mosquitos. You'll be in Lake County, so you'll need to find out from those people how good it is as spraying. I've not found any mosquitos inside our lanai and we did not get the super tight screening. Yes, we have pollen, but that's seasonal. The birds mostly stay over the water and the preserve. They do love walking the shoreline looking for bugs and fish. Yes we've had bird poop on the cage and in the lanai. The hose gets rid of it quickly. It's all worth it for the view and the privacy.

My Brother the same, I always try to sit next to him.

We live on a pond and evenings there are mosquitoes just like we had up north living on a pond but at least down here you don't have Canada geese making a mess in your lawn. I'll take the mosquitoes as I rarely am outside in the evenings and they don't get into the lanai.

Plenty of mosquitos. Use the birdcage. I actually have a bowl with a dunk out in the yard that kills larvae but that must only be a drop in the mosquito bucket.

From reading the comments on this thread, I have deduced that living on water or near a preserve will be the problem with mosquitos. I don't live on water so that is probably the reason for no mosquitos by me.

Experience for yourselves - walk or bike along several preserve or natural areas in the summer, at dusk. You will definitely find there are way more gnats in clusters, and more mosquitoes than interior lots not near preserves or retention ponds. Lovely to look at from inside, but the spraying the various counties do doesn't dissipate far enough back to the nature areas. We always wear glasses when going on the multi-modal paths in the evening because we get bugs in our eyes (mainly swarms of tiny gnats). Some areas are better than others, and summer seems to have the most. Non moving water brings mosquitoes. Also, some areas have tons of those huge 4-5" grasshoppers on the paths right now, so we avoid those areas because they are hard to dodge. Many don't- I don't know why, but they are disgusting and will be in your lanai sometimes.

I'm pretty sure mosquitos are banned from The Villages. I don't think I've seen one here in the four years I've lived here. This morning at the Polo Grounds, I felt something bite my ankle and thought I'd discovered the first illegal migrant mosquito in The Villages. It turned out to be an ant.

Are mosquitoes common in the new neighborhoods? Maybe the ban only extends to the turnpike. I believe ticks and chiggars are also covered in the ban. Do they have those down South, too?

If you want to live on a preserve, live on a preserve. They’ are wonderful! You’ll have a nice screened lanai or bird cage to keep the mosquitoes, and all other critters out. If they like you, they’ll find you regardless of what you back up to. I was outside my screen and after 2 minutes my brother was getting eaten alive so we went back inside. The don’t like me, thank goodness. I live in a Courtyard villa and don’t back up to a preserve but there is a retention pond on the other side of my wall.

I’ve live here four years: two years just north of 466 and two years just north of 466A. I’ve never seen a mosquito at either place. When I’ve visited friends south of 44 near Morse, yes, in the evening, mosquitoes. Lots. Also in backyards north of 466 that are on those grassy “ponds”. Those are prime mosquito habitat, but there are also a lot of creatures eating them.
