When I saw all the new clear plastic bags while on my daily walk it sorta triggered a thought.
When we first came here I asked about recycling. The answer was not at the house hold level...it is separated prisoners at the processing location. Seemed reasonable. Then the so called "we gotta recycle" wave began to germinate. Eventually enough people got the powers that be attention and woe and behold one can now recycle at home.....but because it is voluntary at the home level, they still do the separating at the processing location......AND charge us all $1.47 per month to accommodate special pick up/handling of the clear bags. Maybe I don't have all the facts, but if the above is substantially the case, then what we have here is the epitome of a "special interest" groups effect on the majority. It is what is referred to as feel good administration. Wasn't necessary to accomplish the mission...recycle trash....BUT did increase the cost to us all......has now added even more non biodegradable plastic bags to the system.....is consuming more fuel for special pick ups.....more noise......more pollution.......but more folks feel good. BS....mine goes in the same bags as before....the prisoners were doing a fine job that cost less and harmed the environment less....and used to cost less.... A classic approval of something that makes NO SENSE at all....but y'all who roared about havin' it must feel good now....eh? :edit: :dontknow: |

BTK, I sincerely doubt prisoners were sorting out recyclables. I also wonder if all these new bags of stuff get dumped in one big pile somewhere. Is there proof the stuff is really being recycled? I sure hope it is, but I tend to be a little cynical. Plastic bags to recycle in???

do any of you early morning walkers or golfers know if we now have two different trucks roaming thru our neighborhoods on recycling day?

I saw the recycle truck the other day it is a different truck than the normal trash pickup vehicle. Recycling has been going on in some areas of TV since I've been here and I don't think they were paying any extra plus the fact that they are supplied with milk crate type containers for recycling. Go figure.

Wonder which truck now picks up the telephone books that are still being dropped off at the mails stops?
I have seen a growing pile of books at the mail stop across from the De La Vista Golf Course. They are left just below the sign that says do not leave telephone books here, place them in with your household trash. Maybe it's time for us to consider awarding these folks large S labels to be worn at all times to warn everyone else that the wearer is a recognized STUPID. Who knows if the awarding of the Big S labels catches on, maybe we could give them out at Theaters, in Churches, and for Golf cart jockeys who disregard rules and the safety of others. |

i was out driving in santo domingo at a time between recycling and regular garbage trucks sweep of the neighborhood and noticed an abundance of white (not clear) garbage bags as well as other regular plastic shopping bags with recycling items in them.
the recycling trucks had of course not picked them up but since the garbage truck undoutably will. it raises the question of how many households think they're recycling when in fact they're not. because the garbage truck will have picked everything up before the residents return home from their day's activities. we all hate buying the special clear bags but it wasapparent to me that those are the only bags the recycling trucks are picking up.

From what I've seen, the garbage truck comes before the recycling truck. I noticed this morning that the black garbage bags were gone but the clear ones were not. I looked down the street and saw several white bags still out. My neighbor does not recycle. Her trash is always in a white bag. It was picked up by the garbage men. Two doors down, one of the white bags was still on the ground. I got curious and walked by it -- it was full of recyclables. So, at least in my little area of Santo Domingo, the garbagemen picked up their trash bags and the recylcing guys picked up up all the recycling -- even those in white bags or in boxes. Wonder if this will continue when our "amnesty" period is over. Sure hope so.

i the 9 years i've lived in the sumter county area of tv we've had a few differnt garbage collection companies so the prisoners sorting out recyclables from garbage may have been true at one point and false at another.

Switching garbage companies does not mean they would switch landfill sites and the prisoners would still be available at those sites. In Florida, they do not let the convicted prisoners lounge and watch Television. Some of them work in gardens supplying food for the other prisoners. Take a ride up 35 in Marion county to 468 and look at the large farm on the left. If you go up 301 and pass the Sheriff's station, there used to be a sign that it was built by the prisoners. if you drive almost any highway, you will see the prisoners with the green horizontal stripes doing road work. In Florida, if you get a certain number of DUIs and get sent to the "P" farm, it means that you are going to pick "P"eas and other vegetables for 30-90 days.
Why is it so hard for people to believe that the prisoners sort the recyclables?

There was a group of State Prisoners at the entrance to the Doggie Doo Run Run today-- March 19, 2008-- who were picked up trash or doing something along CR101 and CR104. They are probably prisoners who are set to get out soon or those from various non-violent crimes. I worked as a student attorney for Legal Assistance to Minnesota Prisoners for 18 months or so mainly at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater. In Minnesota, at least, they kept very tight reins on work-release prisoners and the like. My prisoner clients as a student attorney were mainly in for violent crimes except for murder and manslaughter. These were kept at prisons in MN were even more security than at Stillwater. As an aside, the old Stillwater prison is the MN prison where the Younger brothers from the James gang were after the debacle of the James' gang's September 7, 1876 raid on Northfield, MN. I worked at the newer Stillwater prison. |

Maybe I'm naive, but I've come across info often enough about prisoners working on recycling that I'd like to believe it's real. Can anyone actually document this with a link to any online info? Thanks!
