We have a 2010 Yamaha with fuel shutoff and when we purchased the cart, we were told we have a unique key in the 2010's . Dunno that for sure.

Sweetie wonders if there isn't a golf cart chop shop operating somewhere.

Well.....there WAS!

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/...lf-carts-shops

As with many illegal activities, it seems that what gets uncovered by the authorities is just a piece of something much larger in scope. Maybe there are more of these operations around.

Default Keys in golf stolen golf cart

Some of you mention that the cart may have had the keys in it when stolen. Will the insurance company cover the loss due to that? I think, correct me if I'm wrong, if someone steals your vehicle car (not golf cart) and the keys are in it, insurance won't cover it? Hope it gets covered and recovered!

I thought the same thing and there very well could be. However, if there were I would think that we'd be hearing of more thefts than we are! On the other hand I kind of remember reading about arrests involving a chop shop in Leesburg several months ago, but I can't recall where I read about it or if it was or was not a golf cart chop shop.

Best to check with your insurance company directly.

Default Security at TV

This brings up something I'd like to share...My mother-in-law used to live in Water Oak, a few miles down the road from TV. It was a mobile home community. Whenever we visited, we would have to show ID and get permission at the gate to enter the community. The guard called my in-laws home to make sure they were expecting us. Harder to get into than the White House!! I wish TV had a better security system for it's residence. I know...there are so many residence and traffic would be backed up forever trying to enter the gates. It's a good thought though... I might be willing to put up with the delays at the gate for better security.

id bet the crime rate in the villages is as a good or better than most gated communities. i had a lot of employees in orlando living in gated communities and often heard of incidents happening in their heighborhood.

Unhappy golf car theft

I also live in Pooh's neighborhood and got the email message about the theft of one of our neighbor's golf cart. It happened between 5:30 and 7:30 and seemed to definitely be a crime of opportunity. It seems scarey that someone was walking or looking for this opportunity so early in the morning; the street that it happened on is one street over from ours and is a cul-de-sac street...a little out of the way for walkers. The person who emailed us warned everyone to be alert, to be sure to close garage doors, take out keys, and also to use the shut off switch on the wall inside the garage for extra security at night . By turning off this switch, you can prevent anyone from opening your door with a remote. I always close the garage door now, after I had my clubs stolen from the Mallory parking lot. I lock them on my cart or park in the back of country clubs now when we stop for lunch after golf . I saw that two sets of clubs were reported stolen in today's paper.

As posted before, I was told each manufacturer has one common key. The salesman where we bought ours told us about accidently driving a cart a block away from Sumter Landing before his wife realized they were in the wrong cart. Also, if you do a google search, you can learn how to lift the seat and hot wire any cart in two minutes, thus a unique key is of limited value.

The golf cart chop shop was in Tavares. The original article was in the Orlando Sentinel. I thnk someone made a thread from the article.

There have been other articles of people around running golf cart chop shops or at least taking them out of the area and selling them. They were in the Daily Sun if I recall.

This is probably another area where the Daily Sun should be including statistics - along with golf cart accidents and golf club thefts.

The Daily Sun is not, let me repeat that, NOT a newspaper, it is a sales tool for the Villages, by The Villages, and for the sale of homes in the Villages. Violent attacks are not reported, most burglaries are not, most accidents are not and yet you see the people being put away for these unreported crimes in the police blotter. so don't hold your breath for those statistics!
