1. All major manufacturers set their standard golf carts’ maximum speed at approximately 19 mph.
2. Florida law defines a golf cart as incapable of exceeding 20 mph. 3. Law enforcement is currently citing operators of carts capable of exceeding 20 mph for operating unregistered motor vehicles. THESE ARE NOT SPEEDING TICKETS. This is so much worse. 4. A faster golf-cart-style vehicle is not automatically entitled to the same operating privileges as a legal golf cart. 5. The multi modal paths were literally designed for speeds no higher than 20 mph. 6. A cart capable of exceeding 20 mph may invalidate golf cart coverage, leaving the driver personally liable after an accident. So why does anyone think it’s OK to operate a cart capable of 21 mph or more as though it were an ordinary, legally compliant golf cart? |

Are golf carts required to have some form of speedometer? And the ones that do, have they been properly calibrated ? Maybe you think you are going 20 but are actually going 17 or maybe 23...are you sure? A quick search gave me this "GPS speedometers measure speed by tracking the distance traveled over time using satellite signals, and their accuracy can vary by conditions like signal strength and satellite geometry."
Point to ponder... Last edited by Keith1911; Yesterday at 05:40 AM. Reason: spelling |

The worst though, are the ones doing 20 mph and then speed up to 25 when someone tries to pass.
Quote:
The worst outcome is the passing cart moving right and your cart is suddenly in the way. A crash happens. There is a very real likelihood of serious injuries, even death. Don't waste time arguing about who was at fault. It doesn't matter when the outcome is never worth doing that totally unnecessary reckless behavior. One never knows what the passing cart driver might do to retaliate after having that action done to them. When speed is verified as illegal, all insurance coverage vanishes because there are clauses negating coverage when doing illegal things. So keep doing that "teach them a lesson" garbage, and someday a life will be destroyed - physically, financially, family, property, and maybe even selling the house to cover medical bills and lawsuits. Anger management counseling is available that might help. |

Some golf cart thoroughfares are not private property. They are in fact, maintained by municipalities or the county. The infrastructure was purchased from the developer as he moved on. Meggison is an example that comes to mind.

In Sumter County, golf carts are not allowed on Megison Rd, they use the MMPs. South of Sawgrass, golf carts are on the public roadway in the diamond lane and are subject to state laws and county ordinances.

Since golf carts are used for daily commutes in TV, I think there should be similar rules applied to them as cars. Yes the speed limit should be adhered to, but the carts should also have self canceling turn signals and seat belts. Even windshield wipers are a necessity when driving one in the rain, otherwise it's just crazy dangerous IMO.

1 block east of Sawgrass, carts share the road on Meggison for over a mile in Sumter County before entering Newell.
Fast carts aren’t the problem just like cars that can go above 70 mph aren’t the problem. If the driver doesn’t wear a seat belt in any vehicle, he is taking a risk, just like the 100,000 bike riders here, if they don’t wear a helmet they are at risk. Not my problem trying to protect them. You can have an idiot golf cart driver going 10 mph almost hitting bike riders or walkers or doing stupid stuff sharing the roads, its not the cart. Whether i can go 18mph or 28mph, it’s the driver (car or golf cart) that is a problem. If I am going 20mph and some clown is going 14mph because he is trying to look at all the alligators, who is the problem? So now a line of carts are forming behind and people are going to get desperate wanting to pass and they have every right too. Slow drivers cause most of the issues, golf cart or car!!! If you have somebody that is going faster than you, within the speed limit or faster, the slow drivers cause most should just pull over and let them pass, but most people won’t. I’ve driven on Germany’s Autobohn over 150mph and its safer there at those speeds than here in the states at 70 because Germany has strict laws, for 1: you can’t pass on the right so if you are in the left lane going 150mph and you see somebody coming up behind you, you have to pull over to the right lane so they can pass without slowing down. This is how it should be here too, golf cart path or on the streets. |

We don’t need a bunch of Karen’s. If a cart “swiftly” comes up behind you, be nice and let them pass.
The slow carts are a far greater hazard. Especially when they won’t let you pass because “I’m going fast enough”, you shouldn’t go that fast. That’s the worst. Pay attention to what’s behind you, simple enough. It’s snowbird season, my humble opinion, the worst. Getting one slow driver creates a traffic jam. The ones doing 18 mph. Again, if you have a train of carts behind you, be kind and pull off for a moment and let them pass. Some simple be kind rules will go a long way. |

Slow carts maybe, slower carts nope, you just have a convenient excuse to want people to get out of your way. But a slower cart is not the cause of your accident. The time difference to arrival at 25 mph vs 20 mph at 2 miles away is 40 seconds. . get over yourself that those 40 seconds will make or break anything in your life. And there will be a place to pass within 2 miles for sure. . I was behind a couple walking where the man was walking in the middle of the lane facing traffic going across the bridge between Everglades RC and Ednas. If you came around the correct towards Ednas at 25 mph and there was a cart coming the other way at 25 mph. . most likely you would be spending some legal dollars somewhere. . all that for 40-60 seconds of arrival time. . you really can't imagine your errors at a miniscule but not zero probability. . good luck in your race against time |

How did you come up with 40 seconds? CopilotAI says only 22.5 seconds faster.
