Yes. Based on their job performance and politeness. Some work for just above minimum wage. I know this for a fact (family member works in HVAC).

We tip people, especially employees of the companies that we hire. If it's a one owner, one employee then it depends on how well they do their job. The people who have these jobs depend on us, as customers. They do not have high paying jobs but still have high cost of living. Most have families but these are the best jobs they can get. Giving a little bit more to them just seems like the right thing to do.

Default Tripping

I don't tip independent contractors - only workers who are employed by a business.

It depends. If the quote is fair or a little on the low side, I will tell the workers in advance that I will be paying them more than the quote if they do a good job. That gives them an incentive to do good work. It seems to work. But, to automatically tip all workers after they finish doesn't make sense to me.

Why would you tip someone you are paying already? Nice but not necessary, next time they will just charge more.

We seem to be evolving to a culture where everyone gets a tip whether they deserve it or not.

I see. Private small business people do not deserve a tip but those who work for corporate enterprises do. Got it.

I don’t believe in guilt trips sorry.

People need to be charge a proper amount per job. It is not a matter of who deserves a tip. How am I suppose to guess how much a job is worth? What is involved? What materials are needed? How much they cost? How humble is my service person? I prefer a proper estimate of costs rather than guessing at all these things myself. With a waiter one can see the service one receives and knows how much the food costs, with contractors usually one does not.

Tip people how you want. No guilt trip intended. I will continue to tip well for well done jobs. Even my contractors who I feel deserve it. Merry Christmas!

You’ve had workers give you a guilt trip about tipping? Wow.
