Default Maytag washer with agitation noise

First, I know that there small items, which have fallen out of pockets, which have made its way below the agitator column. The noise was really bad during a wash and there were several quarters caught between the bottom of the agitator and the drum. I have removed them with needle nose pliers easily.

However the noise continues, so to remove the agitator column requires a long socket extension, a socket with a rubber gasket to hold the nut in place while lowering into the bottom of the agitator column, and a lot of luck getting all lined up correctly.

Has anyone attempted this disassembly and reassembly successfully?
Or which service company has the best maytag repair techs on staff?

Am leaning towards the service company as I don't like my reassembly chances, unless there is an experienced DIYer willing to take a chance for me. .

Thanks in advance.

I have found the use of masking tape very handy for holding nuts in place in sockets. As for the actual work, I am sure I have the necessary extensions if necessary. I recommend Dave's appliance, if for some reason you cannot get an appliance company, send me a PM so we can discuss over the phone.

Usually ends up being the washer basket hub which gets torn up over time. Of course that's obvious to spot if the drum has trouble starting it's spin or continues to spin after motor shut down. The teeth on the plastic hub wheel will grind off. I have taken several apart over the years and 90% of the time it was the hub. Easy job and $8.57 Amazon each time, but expensive repair if they had called someone out. Just me helping neighbors. Both agitator and impeller models are the same set up.

And yes, search youtube for the style of washer for suggestions, then read into the comment sections to see what others say turned out to be their issue. Most brands are the same on the internal design. I have fixed several BMW and MBenz engine gremlins by reading the comments in a video.

Why would anyone file a complaint on a TOTV poster?

certainly not I

Update if anyone cares, which I doubt. .

I can't get the nut off as I can't get the agitator to stop turning when I turn the wrench!
Argh. . and all the videos are like, "loosen and remove nut" and "I have already removed the nut, so we can proceed"

I need some tips on removing the nut and how to hold the agitator still without wrecking it.

Perhaps a 'strap wrench' on the agitator and a second person to hold it would help getting the nut loose. I suggest this type of wrench as it should cause the least or no damage to the agitator. Any of the hardware stores or harbor Freight should have these, mine did not make it south.

Have you tried PB blaster and allow to soak, they almost rust to the steel motor shaft.

Also, can you stick something large down in the basket, basically jamming it in between the agitator and wall of the basket?

If your agitator is spinning and not the basket, then the hub is gone and easily fixed and cheap.

IF you send me a picture, I may be able to suggest. I just looked at mine and thought about sticking something under the edge of the agitator and lifting it up with pressure, while trying to unscrew.

I won't be back in TV for 4 weeks, so I know you can't wait that long.
