So for some of us LSV owners, it’s not just the additional speed that an LSV provides but the increased access to otherwise cart restricted areas that justifies the ~$450/year registration cost of an LSV.

With $450 registration and $600 insurance people must REALLY get a thrill going 5 MPH faster than a golf cart!

That's a lot of bucks! But it would allow you to get to some places that you can't with a standard golf cart.

But......They are all total electric. Still have the battery discharge problem. If they would allow a gas LSV, I might be able to justify the added expense. I know the batteries are much better that they used to be, but with the size of TV and all there is to do and see, I think a gas cart is the way to go for now.

its $50 a month for the convenience, extra speed and many safety features a golf cart doesnt have! i had a second car for years with the same costs and i get far more out of my lsv than i did my second car. my tomberlin has a golf cart mode for the course and lsv mode for the street. we go to home depot at least twice a week for something. now we also go to michaels twice a week. on second thought.......now that lsv costs $150 a month!!!!!

We love avoiding the speed bumps also, besides, love to e-mail my NC friends of trips to Sam's in my golf cart, where else but in the Villages...giggle
I know I've mentioned this b4 but our LSV insurance is $101/yr....I know, I know must not be right! I've contacted Safeco again and they assure me that I have total coverage, go figure!

Ah, it's the proverbial "Catch-22" - additional costs & concerns about batteries versus being able to go to many more places & ride on the 35mph and under roads. The 'What to do?' conclusion's not going to be the same for everyone!! Pick your poison, I reckon. :-)

So, you're saying it costs $1800/year just to operate your Tomberlin? That sounds like an awful lot to pay for the convenience. I'm not trying to be confrontational. I would love to have an electric GC when we do buy one. I'm just concerned with the battery capacity and the distances and possble night driving. If TV had some charging stations several places that you could get a power bost periodically, it would make the choice easier to go with electric. Our car is a Prius, so I'm all for trying to cut back on the emissions and all that, but I'm just worried that we would run the batteries down.

Do you cross 441 to get to Home Depot, didn't know you could legally cross a 45MPH street?

Chuck, it's actually $450 for insurance and $50 for registration.

Default LSV battery - hope this is not a hijack

We have Gel Cell batteries and a friend has original gel cell batteries in his 2002 Gem cart and just like the ever-ready commercial "still running"...They run about $1600 but if they last 7 or 8 years, well worth it.....No maintenance which is great for snowbirds....Granted it is hard to rationalize insurance ($101/yr), registration and batteries, for 5 more MPH and unlimited access to anyplace within a 35mph speed limit, but for us it works!

I think EdVin's point is that if you're in an LSV, buzzing down a road that you're legal to be on with it and, for example, approach 27/441, you're legal to cross it.

OK, I guess that is how the LSV's cross CR466.

I don't want to party poop on LSV or Street Legal owners, but I am frankly very concerned at the ever-increasing number of them driving Morse, El Camino Real and Buena Vista, especially. One of these days, I'm afraid that some oldster will forget that his golf cart isn't Street Legal, and will merrily chug along one of the major roads. Or, the oldster driving an LSV will forget that he's not an automobile!

Somewhere, fairly soon, there's going to be an accident between an automobile and a golf cart, even a Legal one. And, maybe, then, there'll be some clearer rules and regulations set down!
