Very sad indeed. But did anyone notice over the past 10 years, the inordinate amount of new stores opening and malls too? I often wondered where they thought all these new customers were going to come from. New store branches were popping up everywhere, and yet people haven't been getting the salary increases we were 10 years earlier, so where were they're marketing plans and projections telling them that this was the right thing to do? I never could understand it and therefore, I'm not surprised. Of course, having a down turn like we are having in our economy, doesn't help the situation but if it were my company, I would always plan for a "worse case scenario"... Guess they were just too greedy.

The owner of two of the Cincinnati area's major shopping malls is on the verge of bankruptcy. One of those malls, which is considered Cincinnati's best, has had a major construction project going on which I fear may have stopped. Not sure.
I believe the correct terminology for the business practices of this mall owner is "leveraged out the wazoo." And now that house of cards (and plastic cards) is collapsing. It is sickening. There are lots of jobs that people need in those malls. I don't know where this one is heading. If something doesn't give, it will have real local impact. I hope he does not expect a government bailout. Maybe there will be a buyer somewhere. This monstrous mess is growing arms and legs by the day. Boomer |

If there are no jobs where do they expect people to get the money to even go out to any of those stores and shop. Service jobs hardly pay enough for a family to even have the basics in life. So we send all the jobs out of this country but those same Companies expect us to continue to buy things from them so they can pay slave wages in other countries.

Store Credits or Gift Cards
One thing that I learned awhile back - it was posted out here under a similar thread last year I think - was that the Gift Cards you buy at a store are considered a "loan" to the store for merchandise at a future date. As such, if the store files for bankruptcy, they no longer have to honor that "loan" nad your Gift Card is worthless. Be careful!

I read this post, I hear and see this same kind of news on TV, radio and the newspaper....and yet, every mall we shop at or store we have been to for the past several months is packed, the restaurants are full with waiting lines. Very confusing.

Gift cards to specific stores IMHO have been a huge frustration to us. They either expire without our realizing it, or they are easily lost. The stores will not honor expired gift cards. If you dont run out and use it immediately most likely you will run into the expiration problem.
We have also lost them or forgetten that we have them and by the time we remember its too late. I know they seem like an easy and thoughtful gift to give but I have sworn off gift cards forever, I dont give them ,and I dont want to receive them. We have found that gift cards such as American Express can be a better alternative then store specific cards.

Just my opinion !!!!!
Quote:
Well I can only voice my opinion about stores that are closing..... As for J.Jill which is up for saleand is owned by Talbots, Unfortunately, Talbots felt that the J.Jill stores did not make enough profit. Yes , Talbots sunk ALOT of money into the stores. But I do not think that they will close. As for Talbots, will they close???? With the amount of stores that they own, and the amount of inventory that they have, I do not think so. If they were, you would see alot of mark downs going on now. My inside scoop -Talbots just placed an order for new fixtures for their stores .( How do I know that...I work for a company that manufactures millwork for Talbots.)So would a company spend over a half million dollars now and closed next year? I do not think so. Just my humbe opinioon.......
