I misread your post 1st time around..thought it said "mental detectors" and thought.."Hey..that's a great concept"...

You make an excellent point about how tragedies like this are a bit abstract...until they affect someone directly.

Trying to put myself in the shoes of a parent experiencing a nightmare like this in real time...it's hard to even imagine the overwhelming terror most parents would feel.

Thank goodness it was a good outcome for your housekeeper...as all too many aren't so lucky.

We should approach these problems from every conceivable angle and do anything that will lessen the possibility of it happening again. These kids deserve a safe place to learn. Most of us sure had one.

There has been little school violence on a mass casualty scale before Columbine. Except for the 1927 Bath, Michigan bombing. The 1927 Bombing That Remains America’s Deadliest School Massacre

Question Can't Make it up

You can't make it up. We wonder why there is so much crime and murders and brutal beatings, and all the other criminal and social problems we are having. Lets take a look: We have closed the Psychiatric Centers and turned the mental ill on to the streets, we have allowed and fostered violent video games on the young, we have made marijuna legal and pushed it on to the young by having independent businesses made community centers, we have desenstized our youth to death and killing, our movies have basic contents=smoking, and drinking and killings, we honor those that try to destroy the US which brings down any authority. The shame of all of this is that I have just touched on why our communities and country are failing !
We get the youth drunk, give them a mind altering drug, show them loads of killings and put them in a community with the insane and then sit back and ask why this section of our land is acting as they are. As I say: YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP.

smoking and drinking and carrying on.

Don't forget all that carrying on. This bunch of scallywags didn't invent that either.

Lot of carrying on going on these days. I think they have Humphrey and all beat to heck and back.

Exclamation Hopefully

Hopefully we have not forgotten: In those days we had police that were respected and there was law and order, we also did not tolerate drunks as easy as today, parents were respected and the father was still at home, families went to church, we did not tolerate mind altering drugs. I was born in the 30's, grew up in the 40's and 50's and worked in the 60's-2005 in the US so I did see and do see the changes and they are not good. We have more cowards today who explain everything away so they don't have to address the problems or worse are also enjoying the lack civility and care less about what our children will or are facing! That makes it just that more sad.

I agree. AND because I taught kindergartners, I do believe that what happens in the first five years is crucial to a child's moral compass. People give their little one's over to people they wouldn't trust with their car keys.

I spent my teen years in Ocala and was so sad to see what had happened.
I graduated from Forest High school in 76, the old location off Silver Springs.

Ocala was full of good ole boys..... and rifles in the trucks was not an uncommon site.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why this type of thing didn't happen back then...??? Guns were so available back then, but people just didn't use them in the way they do today....

So sad..... my nephew was at school that day, he heard the shot and took off for the woods.

Sorry, but I think either your memory is selective...or you are unaware of what it was really like.

'Drunks' (particularly drunk drivers), were MUCH more tolerated...especially in smaller towns.

'Tolerated' and/or 'ignored' also, was child abuse (physical and sexual)...and rape by husbands of their wives.

Not to mention, covering for the small %...of bad law enforcement officers.

I could go on and on...but I think you get my point.

Yep.

And EVERY generation laments and complains about the lawlessness/lack of manners/recklessness/lack of responsibility/Etc., Etc....of the 'younger generation.'

Which goes for our parents generation...talking about us.

It's been going on since Caveboy Jr. grumbled about getting up at daybreak...to feed the pet Sabre Tooth Tiger.

And the point is? Paved the way for laws and regulations we have today. Majority of kids was raised by the parents (sure that was few bad apples and mental ill), but the majority new right from wrong) not day care, public school, grandma, or parent single mother. Now shall we talk about different media content. No swearing, sex nudity seems, chainsaw massacre's, no violent video games. No instant posting of nudity. Bottom line it's worse! If you can't see that you don't get the point.

My "point" was addressing the inaccuracies of post #23...which was explained very clearly in posts #26/#27.
