Default New Mate

Great news! The male eagle who lost his mate has returned to the nest
with a new female. The eagle cam is now on and the two are rebuilding
the nest. Hopefully this season will be less painful for all concerned and the two eagles will thrive and produce healthy eaglets. Let the fun begin.

Awwww, I am so glad and relieved to hear that! I began following them even before I became active on TOTV.

More eagle news. One of the three eaglets NX a female was hit by a car is now back at the Virginia Wildlife Center. They are still evaluating the extent of her injuries but she is as fiesty as ever. Her father has found a new mate and they have been seen bringing sticks to the nest that was used last season. The eagle cam will be turned on when the two eagles begin to nest in earnest.

Duffysmom,
I was sad to read your post about her injury, but amazed to see the photos of the incredible care she is getting. We'll all rooting for her! Looking forward to watching the cam again.

There was a program on PBS recently about the bald eagles and they mentioned that the male will return to the nest and find a new mate after the female dies. That apparently is normal. You might want to buy the program from PBS if you're interested. It also involved numerous webcams.

Thanks for the update DM. I guess I'm happy that the widowed eagle found a new mate. It's nature's way.

And so a new year begins for the newlywed eagles.

Default High Drama

Lots of action at the eagle nest. Last year the female eagle was killed by an airplane and 3 eaglets were left behind with only the male feeding them. They were removed and were raised at the Virginia Wildlife Center. The male kept coming back to the nest with food but was confused and appeared upset when he couldn't find his mate or eaglets. Well, now we have high drama at the nest. The male was recently courting a female but she disappeared and may have died as well. Now there are two new females who appear to be fighting over the male but this morning the male mated with one. It is the male who selects the female and they will they mate for life. The original female was this male's mate for many years before she was killed. The eagle cam is active so it's possible we will have some eggs soon and once again witness a reality show like no other. All this drama is played out before our eyes. Last year's was a heartbreak.

There is also an eagle cam in Iowa near the Mississippi river. 3 hatched last year, still a little early for them this far north. There are several different cams listed for different birds - kestrels, owls, ospreys but most are still too early to have any birds.

I saw the nest but that was all. Isn't the mother supposed to be sitting on the eggs to keep them warm? Where is she? Out having her nails done?

Thanks for the update D's Mom. I was so disheartened when last's year Mother Eagle was killed by a plane. It was so sad. But I was happy they relocated the three eaglets.

The widower Eagle now has ladies lined up vying for his attention. Much like Katie Belles. Also, the Management has added new cameras which will provide even better coverage of the area around the nest where the eagles often perch.

The "powers to be" are considering dismantling any nests built too close to the airport, because they can pose a threat not only to the eagles, but to plane safety as well. I somehow doubt this will happen, especially once eggs are laid.

There are no eggs yet to keep warm. She is probably at the Spa, she has a lot of competition this year.

Just recently my husband asked if I'd checked on the eagle cam to see if the male eagle had found a new mate. When he asked me, I felt a swell of sadness thinking about the tragedy from last year's mother eagle. I just looked and read the update on the male. I thought I'd check to see if my friends at TOTV knew we may have a new mother eagle feathering the nest. It sounds like the male is doing fine!! I hope we get to watch the nest again this year. Thank you so much, Barefoot, for giving this site many moons ago.

If I recall from the PBS show, the males also take turns sitting on the nest to keep the eggs warm.

You are welcome BK. This year, the widowed male eagle has mated with three different females! Female Number Three seems to have decided she should be "the chosen one"! He has spent a lot of time and love remodelling the nest to her satisfaction. Now viewers are eagerly waiting for an egg or two.
