This would probably be more interesting than The Bachelor. I will have to check it out, Barefoot.

Default High Drama

Heart stopping drama at the nest this evening. The male was guarding the nest when an intruder attacked the male and it was caught on the cam.
Check out this site for a video of the event. There are no eggs or eaglets yet but if there were they would have been destroyed.

In my previous note about an intruder eagle and the male defending the nest I didn't mention that earlier in the day the intruder was chased by the female and she had an aerial fight where they locked talons in mid air. Spectacular
sight. These eagles are fierce in defending their nest and now that there are so many eagles the quest for territory is becoming a problem and the competition is increasing. Reminds me of the political arena. See pictures below of the encounter.

There was another intruder this morning. The eagles are vigorously defending their territory.

bk I didn't see the confrotation; yesterday was the first day they had sound and it was amazing to hear the eagles calling out to each other. Evidentially the intruder (female) has made several attacks trying to take over the territory. The resident female hasn't been seen today. She defended the nest vigorously so I'm praying that she is OK. Lots of drama.

I checked in with our eagle this morning. It looks like there aren't any eggs yet and the male has found interest in a fourth female.

The Norfolk male eagle started mating with eagle #4 about three weeks ago. And they mate a lot, despite which there are no eggs yet. The female is only five years old though, so it may take another year before she produces eggs.

BK, did you see my post today on "eagles and Owls"? I found two other great cams that have either new babies or eggs about to be hatched. The Decorah Cam is an especially nice one.

No, Bare, I didn't see your other posts. I'll find them though. Thank you. My brother, his wife and my niece are visiting from Nashville, TN, this week. I showed them the Virginia eagle cam this morning. They loved watching. My niece is in seventh grade and her mom thinks it would be awesome for her school to follow the cam.

Today was the one year anniversary of the death of the female eagle while she had 3 eaglets in the nest. The male was lost without her and tried to feed the eagles but it takes two; they were rescued and placed in the Wildlife Center of Virginia and eventually released. The female and male were mates for many years and were loved by many. The female was an awesome mother and mate and she is missed. Eagles are monongamous and mate for life so this year there is a great deal of drama over who will mate with the male. Here is a tribute to the female Lady Legacy.

Thanks DM. Lady Legacy was a beautiful eagle.

The male eagle chose a "new" mate last September. Sadly she was killed by a power line in January 2012. Since then he has been following his instincts to build a nest and produce offspring. He has been regularly mating with three different five-year old eagles, but no eggs have been produced, perhaps because they are too young. The three female eagles take turns coming to the nest for a couple of weeks, and then a new one appears and the other one disappears. I even registered for e-mail alerts and they e-mail me every time anything exciting happens. I think I'll submit an application for "My Weird Addiction".
