Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?
Winter was Mom's beef stew. It's still high on my list but I've added a few herbs and spices to it. Summer was fried chicken and her potato salad. yummmmmmm
A favorite treat was bread -- white, French or sourdough with butter and sugar; rye with cream cheese and jam. Either was heaven to me. I never did introduce Jess to white bread with butter and sugar but she has gotten to know and love the rye.

chuck
Your post reminded me of tuna noodle casserole topped with crushed potato chips. I could eat it hot from the oven or cold from the refrigerator the next day. Never had creamed tuna over toast but did have creamed chipped beef. We called it sh*t on a shingle. That was so so good! |

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?
JohnnyM (All’aglio e Olio) I didn't think anyone would know that. But, as for me, Sunday dinner after church. Coming home and smelling the meatballs frying. Trying to get one with out getting hit on the back of your hand with Mom's wooden spoon. If you were fast and got one she would hit you on a dead run in to the parlor on back of your head with her shoe. And she never missed. She was deadly. 1:00PM, Sunday,
At the table, passta Do I miss that!!!!!!

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?
Sundays, pasta with meatballs, sweet italian sausage, pork and steak that had simmered no less than 6 hours in "gravy" not sauce! The italian gravy was a staple used throughout the week! Home made Gnocchi and cavatelli! Creamed chipped beef on toast(s**t on a shingle, yup!), pea soup, beef stew, and pasta, pasta, pasta. I still need my pasta fix every week! Lasagna anyone?? Lets have a pot luck party, I will make the lasagna! 9:30 AM and I'm getting very hungry!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?
Pasta on Sundays with all the meat....Meatballs, sausage, pork, bracolia and sometimes pepperoni.* I still on occasion made it (when I'm not on a diet). It was always called sauce in upstate New York.....Gravy is brown.

Quote:
In the Bronx, a very, very Italian neighborhood, we would leave church and smell all the cooking of "gravy" (Ronda) all the way home and by the time we got home, we were into the pot for meatballs or bracolia. Sometimes, if we were really hungry (you couldn't eat before receiving communion in those days), we'd cross the street to grandma's and eat all her bracolia from her pot before going home. She never complained, she was so happy to have her grandkids to feed. Great memories, I'm getting hungry!

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?
My Grandma's day old biscuits with honey, she had a wood burning stove/oven, a pump in the kitchen for water, but she unways had cold biscuits w/ honey or molasses for us. I'm sure that at some time the biscuits were hot but I only remember them cold. My Dad finally put electric to them but she wouldn't use her new electric stove, she liked her wood burning stove. You know what they say "Almost Heaven W.Va."

Have you tried Cane Garden's meatloaf? I'm sure you have if you are a meatloaf lover like me. I think it is very, very good. |

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?
When the wife and I were first married, I remarked once that my mother made great meat loaf. My wife made some and asked for a comparison - - - no comment.
A year of so later my mother came for a visit and made meat loaf - you needed an ax to cut it! Haven't had meat loaf in ages
