On Saturday mornings my dad would go downtown in Chicago and bring home Davidsons Bagels. I honestly have never found a bagel that comes even close to these bagels since! They really were to die for and tasted more like cake then Bagels. What I wouldnt give for just one Davidsons bagel. :

Does anyone in TV make great bagels?
Any Chi town people remember Davidsons????

Sorry about the hijack, Donnas Italian bread got me droolin!

Kathie, could your sister in--law re-shape her homemade bread?? :dontknow:

Nonie, she can do anything. Bet she could make great bagels. She's the best cook I've ever met.

Even now, I am smiling with the great memories. I've tried to 'pass' this on to my girls, years ago.....No way will they eat it and can't imagine why I think it is so great.
I was given that too. The doctor, who came to the house, almost always prescribed a diet of tea and toast. The tea was almost all milk with sugar. Another meal given to me when I was sick was "baby eggs" (given also to toddlers) it was poached eggs over torn up bread with butter added. YUM!

Now YOU have triggered another food memory Nonie.

On Saturday mornings my granddad would go downtown to market in Columbus, Ohio and get wonderful German lunch meat, including Souse, Thuringer, Braunschweiger and others you never can find now. He would bring bakery bread, crunchy on the outside. My grandmom would get up early every Saturday, winter and summer and make a pot of chili. It was Columbus, Ohio chili (NOT the same as Cincinnati chili) , not spicy or thick but so yummy! We my cousins and I would smell it cooking when we got up and often had a cup of chili for breakfast. We frequently had company on Saturday and they would be invited to our round kitchen table that had a lazy susan in the middle and would share our lunch meat sandwiches and chili and beer for the grown ups.

And Kathie, I remember fasting because of Communion. We also had meatless half meals during lent and would have a roll and juice at school after morning Mass every day.

Gosh, it's hard to pick. My mom was such a good cook - plain, simple food. One of my favorites were her homemade, raised doughnuts. Mmmmmm good.

She also made a delicious stewed chicken, with dumplings and a white gravy that I really liked.

She also had her dutch oven (as someone else mentioned). She made everything in that, and I was dumb, dumb, dumb, not to take it when she passed away.

She "sucked my husband in" with her food.

Susan

Now I want to make pot roast tonight. Only there isn't enough time. I always put it in the oven in the morning and let it cook on low temp all day...meat falls apart and the potatoes and carrots take on the flavor of the roast making the meal oh so scrumptious.

Maybe tomorrow....oops, there goes my new eating habits...oh well!

My Mom's Roast Leg of Lamb with slivers of garlic placed throughout. Roast potatoes with blackened caramelized onions cooked with the roast and turnips with bacon.

After that it would be White Castle. I grew up across the street from one in Da Bronx.

Kath.... My curiosity got the best of me re so many responding how they loved the Italian dish "Aglio e Olio" the pasta with olive oil and garlic. I looked up the recipe online and hubby made it tonight for dinner. WOW what have I been missing all these years?

It was absolutely scrumptious and I imagine that the next day it's even more tasty with the flavors blending. This is now a big fav on our menu now.
