Before you even get to the gym make sure you have your weight training exercises organized out. You cannot get there and just side it if you want to see serious outcomes.

Hi Martin, Welcome!

The very first thing you should do before starting an exercise program is have an examination with your doctor and tell him/her what you are planning to do. All of us here at TOTV are well-meaning but for the most part are not medical professionals.

You may have some kind of health issue that you are unaware of. So please be sure you are healthy enough to exercise before you start. Next, start slowly! And I mean slowly! As some previous posters have suggested, swimming or walking are great for us wrinklies because they are gentle on the bones, joints and muscles.

So sign up to a beginner swim class or exercise class or some such. It is imperative that the class trainer know that you are a newbie and if you have any medical conditions.

Then, a little at a time, have more and more fun!

Best wishes to you on your new exercise expedition!

I would join a gym and ask fitness personnel what is best for you to achieve your goals.

Best of luck and to TOTV.

Train don't Strain.
Stretch to loosen up muscles (If it's good enough for professional athletes why wouldn't it be good for YOU?) progressively increase workload
Pools offer wonderful resistance yet aren't so challenging to joints and tendons.
For a great overall work out in your home consider KETTLEBELLS (don't start out with too much load) Kettlebells will work your entire body and address muscles your may have overlooked.

Don't overlook the old standby's walking/ bikng/ swimming. and soon you will look in the mirror and see

Stop by MVP and work with a personal trainer. You will not only get more out of your work outs you will be taught on how to protect the body. I see far too many people improperly using equipment and I am afraid they are going to hurt themselves

Actually the rule of thumb is that more weight with fewer reps builds size while lower weights and more reps builds strength.

But you're correct. If building muscle is the main goal weight lifting is the best exercise. I don't disagree with anything that anyone else has said. Walking, bike riding, swimming and everything is great for aerobics as well as muscle strengthening, but weight lifting will develop bigger and stronger muscles faster and better than anything else.
