Exclamation Keep Right Except to Pass -- It's the Law!

Most Villagers have a Florida driver's license, and if not, have a license from their home state, probably.

As with most other states, the law in Florida is to drive in the right lane (on a 2-lane or more road), unless you are passing.

Can someone please tell me what it is with so many drivers here that insist on driving the left (passing) lane?
Other than it is against the law, that is so wrong for so many reasons.

I grant you that in a highly commercial area, such as on 441 say, it is difficult to do because of all the turning into a shopping area.
But in other areas if you flash your lights or honk your horn, these people in the left lane actually get annoyed!

Perhaps if the police started giving tickets to those who think they own the road, they will drive the right (and correct!) lane.

One thing I know from all my life living around here,, no one and I mean no one will ever abide by that thought or law. You need a Kevlar vest and helmet just to drive around here on most days. Keeping people out of left lane is like trying to explain to people how to navigate a round a bout. Good luck on that one.

100%

There is nothing more frustrating than some bozo on I-95 just obliviously driving 55 in a 70 zone in the left lane, worse yet driving side by side with another bozo going 55 in the right lane. But the worst are those who INTENTIONALLY drive way under the speed limit in the left lane because they view themselves as the final authority on what THEY believe the speed limit SHOULD be. Ticket all of them!!!!!

Now, if you want to drive 25 on a residential street posted at 30, fine. But high speed expressways are exactly that---high speed. If you can't handle that, stay on US 301. Better yet, walk---you'll get there quicker

Good luck with this one...there are two types of drivers in the Villages; ones who are oblivious to what's going on around them and the ones they drive crazy!

Hence, ticket them. They'll wake up and the rest of us will be a little less crazy.

Actually, I don't think that that is THE LAW. I don't think that you can be ticketed for driving in the left lane unless you are impeding traffic behind you. Also, I believe that Florida, like most other states allows passing on the right on a two lane road.

But I agree, if you are going to drive the speed limit or lower, you should drive in the right hand lane. It drives me crazy when I have to drive down 441 and there is some Bozo in the left hand lane going under the speed limit. In fact, a law was recently passed in Florida that states if you are in the left hand lane and another vehicle approaches from behind, you MUST move over to let that vehicle pass. It does not matter if you are going 40 or 140, if the driver behind you wants to go faster, you must get out of the way and let him.

If you are in the right hand lane and the car ahead of you is going slower than you, pass on the left. If you are in the left hand lane and no one is in front of you and someone is behind you get the **** out of the way.

But you are driving in the left hand lane and no one is behind you, I don't believe that there is any violation. Or if you are in the left hand lane and the car in front of you is holding you up and you in turn are holding the car behind you up, I don't believe that there is any obligation to move to the left. In that situation, you may, if it is safe to do so, pass the slower moving vehicle on the right.

Of course, that is kind of like the proverbial tree in the forest that falls with no one around---does it make a sound? If there is no one behind that driver, who could be unhappy?

The OP suggested that driving the the left hand lane except to pass is a violation of the law. I don't believe that it is unless you are impeding traffic.

On 466A you could give out 10,000 tickets a day. 9 out of 10 drivers coming off of Buena Vista heading toward Colony Plaza must immediately think, I'm turning left in 4 miles, I better get in the left lane now. Same can be said for those turning west headed toward Pinellas Plaza, I've got a left turn coming up, I better get over now, nevermind I'm only doing 40, that's a good safe speed for me. The drivers behind me should realize, I'm saving their lives going this slow.

Hey Doc, you must of missed post #7. It's not as strong a law as I would of liked it, but as of July 1st if driving in the left lane at 10mph slower than the speed limit is a fine of $60. I remember it was news on most of the stations when it passed.

As has been demonstrated time and time again, in a plethora of threads on the subject of driving in the left lane, there are those who believe that if they're doing the speed limit...they shouldn't have to move over.

Never mind that the law/signs says 'SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT.'

And yes, that means you who is doing the speed limit (or more) in the left lane...but have cars stacked up behind you.

While there are definitely those who are oblivious to the traffic backing up behind them (often because they're on their phone or texting), I personally believe there are a large number that know exactly what they're doing and get a thrill out of 'controlling' the speed by pacing the vehicle in the right lane...and thereby keeping anyone from passing them.

This type of passive-aggressive behavior, is a big cause of the road rage from the real nutcases out there.

So for you that think it's funny to have vehicles stack up behind you by doing the speed limit in the left lane, think about that one person who is on the edge to start with...and is carrying a firearm.

Is playing cop...really worth the potential incident?

I ride the left lane usually 5+ over . If someone comes up behind me I'll be more then happy to go to the right and get back once they pass me. Hopefully they get the ticket before me. I do agree it passes me off to when there' a slow driver in the left lane.

Default Keep Right Except to Pass -- It's the Law!

I believe most offenders think that if they are going the speed limit or higher it is legal to stay in the left lane when faster traffic approaches. That is simply not the case.

Speed is irrelevant for this particular law...if you do not move to right as faster traffic approaches, you are breaking the law regardless of your speed or the speed of the approaching vehicle.

One of my biggest pet peeves!

I have been fighting this one in my head for many years. It never changes as the police don't give out tickets to those in the left lane but give tickets to those who pass on the right. as it it obvious some people think they own the road.

On parkways back in CT, some people ride the left lane as they don't want to deal with those coming onto the parkway.

I get to deal with this again next week. AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
